Pope Francis spent almost the entire year speaking about and giving examples for us of that gift from the Father, given in Jesus through the Holy Spirit. It’s a shame that there are many aspects of our world which do not even WANT mercy, especially if that gift is given to someone who is despised, unloved or rejected. Much of why the Pharisees persecuted Jesus had to do with the people to whom he extended mercy. They were so focused on the judgement of God, they ignored his love. But there are so many people who are livid and enraged about this shift in focus. They cannot forgive and move on. They demand “revenge”. As a pastor I have tried very hard to walk with people in difficult life situations. Many of these involve helping them through a personal conversion and an opening up to grace and forgiveness. But some people seeing these situations have demanded an instant conversion before the sinner would be welcomed into the community of faith. If a cohabiting couple wouldn’t live separately, the judging crowd would act very harshly towards them, even to the point of making very public accusations and condemnations. These times remind me of the novel, “The Scarlet Letter,” where public shaming is the norm. So I go back and re-read the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. She had been married five times and was living with a man she wasn’t married to. Jesus still offered her living water and grace. The wise saying, “honey attracts more flies than vinegar,” needs to be applied. This past year has been an on-going lesson from Pope Francis about mercy. Mercy is more powerful than judgement. The Catholic Church has just concluded the Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy. Pope Francis spent almost the entire year speaking about and giving examples for us of that gift from the Father, given in Jesus through the Holy Spirit. It’s a shame that there are many aspects of our world which do not even WANT mercy, especially if that gift is

They were so focused on the judgement of God, they ignored his love. Some examples from today could help us better understand why this is such an important topic. When President-elect Donald Trump was campaigning, he talked about appointing a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton on the email scandal. Now that he will be our next president, he has said we should all just let this go and move on to more important things. But there are so many people who are livid and enraged about this shift in focus. They cannot forgive and move on. They demand “revenge”. 20th Annual Christmas at the

Cathedral – Dec. 15, 16, 17 & 18

Time is drawing near for the 20th Annual Christmas at the Cathedral. This year’s theme, “Re-Imagine Christmas” offers an opportunity to imagine ourselves experiencing the very first Christmas. Through beautiful music and inspiring

reflections, audiences will experience how God “re-imagined” the world through the Incarnation – God coming among us – in the birth of His Son, Jesus, who came in weakness. The performance dates are December 15, 16, 17, & 18. There are six performances from which you can select. The production is pleased to welcome tenor back, Scott Piper and soprano, Marni Raab, along with storyteller, Vickie Fuller. Dan Goeller and Kevin Humke will be conducting the Christmas at the Cathedral Orchestra and Choir. In addition to bringing the community together to celebrate this special time of year, Christmas at the Cathedral supports the poor and vulnerable in our midst through the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House Endowment as well as the ongoing care of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, one of the region’s most significant civic and sacred landmarks. We look forward to sharing the joy of Advent and the Christmas season with you during the 20th annual Christmas at the Cathedral.
