From the Desk of Father Ed: Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we celebrate the second Sunday of Advent. Our Gospel from St. Matthew features St. John the Baptist in the desert preaching to the people, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” And calling them to a baptism of repentance. John’s appearance and style was very different from our Lord’s. John the Baptist lived in the desert, “wore clothing made of camel’s hair...his food was locusts and wild honey.” John’s preaching style was as rugged as his appearance. He called the religious leaders of Jesus’ time a brood of vipers and warned them that if they did not bear fruit in life they too would be cut down and thrown into the fire. John’s mission was to be, “A voice of one crying out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” He was sent by the Lord to prepare the people for Jesus’ coming into the world. When we hear that St. John the Baptist was calling the people out into the desert it reminds us of the Jewish people’s forty years journey through the desert. The Jewish people wandered for forty years in the desert so that God could remove from them their sins of idolatry and to claim them as his own people. Once again they are called back into the desert because they are not ready to enter into the Promised Land. They need further conversion by turning away from their sinful life and repenting of their sins through the waters of the Jordan River. St. John the Baptist reminds us that we too need to be prepared for the coming of Jesus. We too need conversion in our lives by turning away from sin. It is a call for us to let go of the earthly things and to seek after the things of heaven. Conversion for us Catholics always includes a sorrow for our sins and confessing them in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before a Priest and hearing the words of absolution...the words give us healing and forgiveness from our Lord. John the Baptist also reminds us as he did the religious leaders of Jesus’ time that we need to bear fruit in life, that is, to become a saint and live a virtuous life. In the desert, John baptised the people with a baptism of repentance; it was not a sacramental baptism. John told the people that when Jesus comes He will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. We have received the Sacrament of Baptism and so we have received the gift of the Holy Spirit and the fire of God’s love for us. God dwells within us and remains in us as long as we remain in the state of grace, that is, if we do not commit a serious sin. As we continue on our journey through the Season of Advent let us be prepared for the Lord’s coming through conversion and repentance. We make a straight path for Him by turning away from sin and the things of the world and confessing our sins to the Priest so that He will draw closer to us and shower us with his blessings and gifts.

Our Lady Queen of Peace, pray for us, Father Ed, Administrator
