Two different kinds of retreat

Recently I made two retreats, one I wanted to make and another I didn’t. The first was my annual retreat. Every year priests are required to take several days away for prayer and spir-itual renewal. This year I spent a week at Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina. The monks there are Cistercians; they follow a strict rule of prayer and silence. I loved it. I joined the community every day at each of the peri-ods of prayer called The Liturgy of the Hours. Their monastery is set on hundreds of acres of land along the Cooper River. For me the beauty of God’s creation draws me to the awesome presence of the Creator. This was my week away from “the world” to regain my spiritual strength. Then came the unwanted retreat. I’m actually writing this to you from my bed at the Lahey hospital in Burling-ton, recuperating from an infection and inflammation in the groin area (enough said!). No pleasure or beauty here. This was a retreat from my ministry, unintended and imposed to restore my lost physical health. It was the worst possible time to be away from the parishes: a weekend with a wedding, our usual seven Sun-day Masses, a surprise engagement blessing, and the anointing of Deacon Simon and Dawn. And it was I who needed anointing! Thank God for Fr Paul and Fr Steven and a Carmelite priest who met the challenge wonder-fully. I felt terrible. This wasn’t supposed to happen. But it did. And all I could do was accept it. During this retreat I had to learn the hard lesson of suffering and feeling useless. I began to think of those many people who live this “retreat” with much greater pain, loneliness and hopelessness than I ,and for much longer. The fact is that our lives are interrupted by such times when we are at a loss to do the things that give us imme-diate meaning and purpose: doing our jobs, taking care of our families, even the little chores that make up our lives. Then I thought about Advent which was unfolding this weekend. Advent is a season of waiting, waiting for something and Someone whom we cannot meet on our own terms. It puts us in a place where we know that our future, near or far, depends on a God who will save us, but in his own time and circumstances. During these first days of Advent in the hospital I realized I had to practice what I preach to people whom I find in a place of involuntary waiting in hospitals and nursing homes, maybe for a long time. I tell them of course to have hope, that they or things will get better. But more importantly I tell them that there is something they can do. They can pray and think about other people who need God’s help. Their prayer is deepened by their suffering and perhaps even a feeing of helplessness. Prayer in such difficult, seemingly empty moments can lead them to Jesus and his place of hope on the cross. In the eyes of a world that values only a person’s work and productivity, the cross appears useless, futile, hopeless. But for us who believe, the cross of Christ is the highest of achievements, and the most hopeful of deeds. The cross was Jesus’s last and greatest prayer. Through it he gave the world a hope it could never im-agine: eternal life. May the power and example of his prayer give hope and life to all of us who join our prayers and suffering with his. Father John

Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2016

Me encantó. Me siento terrible.

Sinto-me terrível.

THE LISA WILEY FUNERAL FUND

Last summer I wrote to you about Lisa Wiley, a homeless woman who came regularly to our Friday lunches and died suddenly. We provided a funeral for her at Saint John's on August 13.

Mass Health provides some modest funding for funeral expenses but not enough to cover all that is involved, even for a simple funeral. Saint John's parish contributed everything related to the funeral Mass. Volunteers pre-pared and served a meal after the funeral. The funeral directors also contributed some of their services but there are some expenses that are not donated and need to be paid. Saint John's offered to assume these costs in the amount of $2,400.

We appeal to you to consider making a donation in any amount to Saint John's to help defray these costs. Donations can be made payable to Saint John the Baptist Parish / Lisa Wiley Fund. Thank you for considering this work of mercy. God bless. Fr. John

Will you sponsor a child?

Every school year St. John School receives many requests for tuition assistance. This year there is a substantial increase in the need for

tuition financial assistance. Many families want their chil-dren to have the Catholic education experience but the tui-tion expense is a financial burden and they struggle to keep their children in our school year to year. If you or someone you know would like to be a contributor to a Catholic school education for one of our deserving stu-dents, please contact the school office at (978) 531-0444. Ext. 336. The Divine Child’s Birth Advent leads the Church to the Silent Night when God Himself is revealed as one of us. This season leads us to the joy of His birth. If God has joined His nature to ours, how can we ever allow our nature to be despised? If He has come to bring us Divine Life, and will return to take us to the skies, how can it be all right to throw people in the garbage? May His birth shed protection on all about to be born, and as we work to end abortion, may we "wait in joyful hope for the coming of Our Savior, Jesus Christ."
