It occurs right after Christmas, stops at Lent, and picks up again after the Easter celebrations. In general, Ordinary Time focuses on the teachings and the miracles of Je- sus, the many things Jesus did in those three years leading up to his Passion and Death. The theme today is that Jesus is God, but a God who is a servant. St. Paul was the earliest writer to see Jesus as Lord and God. In the reading from Isaiah, the prophet speaks the word of God: God says, “It is not enough that you shall play the role of servant in restoring the kingdom, but I will make you a light to all the nations so that every person shall be saved.” This is the prophetic role of the Messiah: God becomes a servant in order to save all mankind, not just the Jews. Our responsorial psalm today echoes the reply of the servant, the Son, who comes only to do the will of the Father. “Here I am, Lord, I have come to do your will.” This is Jesus, then, the one whom John the Baptist today recognizes. Note that Jesus is the lamb of God. He is not the shepherd. In the relationship of Father and Son, Jesus is the lamb, the Father is the shep- herd and leader. The lambs follow. This lamb, the Savior, this servant, this Jesus is able to take away the sins of the world. That is his purpose in coming, the reason he was sent by the Father. John also recognizes the divinity of Christ--”he was before me” and needed to be revealed. John then testifies that he himself is only a messenger, sent to reveal the truth. He tells his followers how he saw the Spirit descend on Je- sus like a dove and remain there. John ends his speech with the declaration: “...this is the Son of God.” We know then that Jesus is a servant come to take away our sins, that he is the Son of God, and that he will offer a new kind of baptism. In the next few weeks we will see how he goes about doing that. A good many Protestant churches today seem to say that each of us has to see Jesus as our own personal Savior. This is never indicated in the Bible. Even in the Isaiah reading to- day we learn that Jesus came for all--to bring salvation to the ends of the earth. When Paul writes to the church at Corinth, he includes “those who are called to be saints”, together with all who call on Jesus. And he is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. He is not just my personal Savior, he is everyone’s Savior. He came for us all, and he died for us all. That is why we stress communal worship. We are called not just to a personal relation- ship with Jesus but with a communal relationship, one that attempts to reveal Christ to more and more people. How do we do this? First by our com- munal worship. Our coming together for Mass has to grow to be more important to you than the rest of your week, the rest of your activities, simply because we need each other, we are strength- ened by each other and we spread the word by our communal actions. The hope is that when you miss Mass, you really miss it. We are less without you, and you feel less without us, even if you won’t admit it. We have to come to Mass because we really want to come, not just to “get something out of it,” but to see it as our hour of com- munal weekly worship of God. We are to participate in Jesus’ sacrifice, to become one with other members of the congre- gation. If we really felt all this as we should, we would never want to miss. Secondly, once we come together in worship, we be- come visible signs to the rest of the world by what we do. We spread the word of God, the kingdom of God by the things we are, a community, and the things we do--the acts of char- ity, the care we show others. That is the real way we spread God’s kingdom, the way we become the lambs of God, the way we help in taking away the sins of the world. Are You A Visible Sign of Christ in the World?

Ministries NeedMore Volunteers

A VOCATION VIEWSecond Sunday in Ordinary Time Jan. 19, 2014 Through your baptism you are God’s servant and a light to others. With whom will you share your light? Think about a life of service as a priest, sister or brother. Call or email Fr. Matt Dupre at 225.336.8778, [email protected].

We need at least two more vol-unteers to help clean the church sanctuary and sacristy areas and at least one more to help clean the altar linens. If interested in either of these ministries, please call Mary Chenier, 265-7631.

We welcome the following who were recently received through the waters of baptism into our faith community: Cayson Zander Long, born July 29, 2013 to Courtney and Zaquita Narcisse Long. Alexandra Reese Neiley, born November 12, 2013 to David and Katie Waguespack Neiley. Nathalie Rose Oubre, born October 15, 2013 to Brittany Ann Oubre and Eldridge Durrell Jupiter. Jarett Michael Scioneaux, born December 10, 2013 to Paul III and Becky Lambert Scioneaux. Raygen Kate Schexnayder, born on December 9, 2013 to Shawn and Brit-ney Oubre Schexnayder. Demi Kaelyn Harry, born October 19, 2013 to Demontray Harry, Sr. and Anissa Bush.

We Welcome to Our Family... Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. Catholics in Latin Amer-ica and the Caribbean face many challenges, including violence and a lack of both clergy and lay leader-ship to witness to the gospel mes-sage. Your support shares the faith with those in need, including the youth of Holy Family Parish in San Miguel, El Salvador. These young people, at high risk for violence, of-ten lack an education in values and critical-thinking skills. To address this need, the parish designed a youth enrichment program. Fund-ed by the Collection, this program gives the youth an opportunity to share their faith and break the cycle of violence in their neighborhoods. Please give generously to next week’s collection.

Bible Study to Focus on the Struggles of the Heart

For eight weeks leading up to Holy Week our parish will offer the Jeff and Em-ily Cavins series “Walking Toward Eternity Part II: Engaging the Struggles of Your Heart.” Some may remember participating in Part I which was offered prior to Holy Week last year. This second series is a challenging study that can open our eyes to obstacles in our Christian walk such as greed, envy, fear, shame, anger, loneliness and hopelessness. Through prayer, reflection, guidance, and the aid of the Holy Spirit, we begin to engage these difficulties in a positive way as we continue toward our goal of union with Christ. As in the first series, we will participate in daily prayerful meditation with Scripture (lectio divina) at home. At our weekly sessions we will have opportunity to meet in small groups for prayer and discussion and see a video that will help us to focus on the theme for the evening. Our sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the following evenings: Wed., Feb. 19; Wed., Feb. 26; Thurs., March 6; Thurs., March 13; Wed., Mar. 19; Thurs., March 27; Wed., Apr. 2 and Thurs., Apr. 10. The registration fee of $20 includes the personal prayer journal, book mark and other handouts. Please call the office to register so that we can order the proper amount of materials.

January 14, 2014

To the Clergy, Religious and Faithful of the Diocese of Baton Rouge:

In recent months, the issue of public health has been heightened by the occurrences in some places of the influ-enza virus. While this virus has impacted some places in the country more than others, there is wide-spread worry about infection and the spread of the virus. As this influenza virus affects varied areas of public life, such as the workplace and some schools, there could also be some concern for those who engage in public worship. I have been monitoring the situation with the help of the Bishop’s Committee on Divine Worship, which in turn has been following the directives giv-en by the National Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Both your pastors and I have been atten-tive to these resources. With this in mind, I would ask the following of all of you in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Please use the common sense precautions which help impede the spreading of infections, such as frequently washing your hands and, if coughing or sneezing, doing so into a disposable facial tissue or hand-kerchief, and not your hands. These practices can help lessen the threat of spreading germs. More specifically, when we worship in our dio-cese, I would ask the following: 1. Pastors are to direct ministers of Holy Communion in each parish to take these precaustions before they are to serve at Mass: to wash their hands before Mass begins, and use antibacterial hand washing aides as needed. The same is to be done after Communion is distributed, once Mass is completed. This is not to distract the praying congregation and so is best done out of public view. There should not be a new ritual created to take these precautions in a common sense manner. 2. If you are a person displaying influenza symp-toms, please do the following: a. The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation is the ordinary expectation of Catholics. Extraordinary circumstances such as sickness, travel or se-vere weather excuse the faithful from this obligation. If you are not feeling well, especially during this time of concern about “the flu,” please stay at home and do not risk spread-ing infection to others. If you are sick at home, and if your local provider offers the diocesan Catholic LIfe television channel, you may be able to participate by praying with the televised liturgy from the Cathedral each Sunday morning as well as daily Mass. You can also request that your parish pro-vide Holy Communion to you as part of its normal pastoral care of the sick. b. Please refrain from receiving from the Holy Com-munion Cup or from receiving the consecrated Host on the

A Letter From Bishop Muenchtongue. c. Minimize physical touch with others. True, physical touch at Catholic liturgy is a natural expression and sign of our human and divine communion. The Sign of Christ’s peace is a required part of the Mass, but the method of extending it has variations. In the United States, the handshake has become the customary way of doing this. Yet persons with

flu symptoms should refrain from offering a handshake to express Christ’s peace. During this time of health concern, a person may in-stead offer the verbal greet-ing, “The peace of Christ be with you” accompanied by a nod of the head. 3. In the Diocese of Baton Rouge, offering the Chalice of the consecrated Blood of Christ at Holy Communion is expected whenever pos-sible at every Mass. This is an important expression of Catholic faith, and the sign value is not to be taken lightly. Offering and receiv-ing Holy Communion under both forms allows the full-ness of the sign of our Com-

munion in Christ to be expressed. However, during this time of heightened health concern because of the influenza virus, in some parishes, for some or all of the parish Masses, a lo-cal pastor may deem it necessary, with permission from Fr. Than Vu, Vicar General, or me, to suspend the offering of the Precious Blood of Christ to the congregation. I would al-low this to be the case for a reasonable length of time until the health worry about possible influenza virus contagion has lessened or ceased. After that time, it is expected that the Holy Communion Cup will be restored to the congregation as the usual manner of offering Holy Communion. 4. While not denying the reality of disease or how dis-ease is spread, it is important for us to remember that there will always remain a certain risk that comes with taking part in public worship. It is not possible for us to live in a germ-free society. From getting out of the car, opening the door of the church, touching the pew, holding the hymnal, etc., we en-counter risk. Perhaps this is a chief reason why we come to worship. In a time of history, when things in life around us can seem so uncertain, we turn to the One who is certain, faithful and present whenever we gather to worship. If there are any other changes necessitated at this time, I will communicate these to you. If you have any specific ques-tions, please address them to Father Tom Ranzino, Director of the diocesan Office of Worship. Sincerely in the Lord, Robert W. Muench, Bishop of Baton Rouge
