SECOND MILE SERVICE
Matthew 5:38-42
A Lesson On Acceptable Service
• Some do as little as they have to do– "Compel" – "to be compelled by
violence to do any particular service, especially of the public kind, by the king’s authority"
– Many view their service with this attitude– "I'll do what I have to do, but don't expect
more"
Some Commands AreVery Specific
• You either have or have not obeyed
– Baptism, for example
• No limits on some service
–Faithfulness determined by attitude and devotion
SECOND MILE SERVICE
• Giving
– Some want to know minimum
• Attendance
– Some ask, "Do we HAVE to attend every service?"
– What about gospel meetings?
SECOND MILE SERVICE• Service To Others
– Luke 10:30-37 – "Good Samaritan"– Law did not require him to aid– Priest & Levite did not want to "get
involved"– Don't ask, "What has he done for
me?"– John 13:4-10 – Jesus washes their feet
SECOND MILE SERVICE• Forgiveness
– Matthew 18:21,22
– What if Jesus had given a number?
– No limit – Makes it real forgiveness each time
SECOND MILE SERVICE• Service To God
– How long? – Some think, "I've done enough."– What if God had the same attitude
toward us?• Don't ask, "Do I have to?"• Ask, "May I?" – Acts 8:36
