Board Chairman Bob Poole and

President/CEO Dr. Jack Raykovitz

ONE BY ONE…YOU ARE

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

While The Second Mile Annual Report 2008includes, as always, many numbers—revenueand expenses, services provided, and youthserved—what is most important to each of us isthat those numbers represent the support wehave provided so that the lives of children and

teens can be improved. We would like to focushere, not on the numbers, but on just a few ofthe youth who make up those numbers:

• A young man who was angry and acting outagainst authority following his father’s deathin a logging accident used the messages heheard from his Friend Fitness role models tond sobriety, recover from a signicant loggingaccident himself, establish his own business, andmentor a youngster from Huntingdon County inthe Friend Fitness Program today.

• Twelve young people attending the ChallengeProgram felt close enough to our counseling staffto share that they were in abusive situationsat home, and two shared that they had beenhaving thoughts of suicide. As a result of thesedisclosures, all of these young people are gettingthe support that they need and are now safe.

• A mother whose two sons participate in theLancaster Friend Program shared that both ofher sons are living with cancer. Despite theirhealth issues, the boys love the activities atFriend and have made a positive connection withtheir College Friends. They are thankful for the

chance to have fun days with other kids, freefrom the day-to-day worries about their health.

• Eastern York students participating in TheSecond Mile Leadership Institute planned andhosted a “career camp” for area elementaryschool students as an outgrowth of theirInstitute experience. This past December, theteam was recognized for its project work at aYork County Alliance for Learning meeting!

• A Challenge camper’s mother contacted staff toshare these comments: “He really enjoyed your

program this summer and wants to continuewith the program by earning a return trip. He’s showed so much improvement this year. He’s more outgoing, and his participation levelin class has been terric. When Mrs. C., theschool counselor who referred him to Challenge, commented to him that he’s really come out ofhis shell and blossomed this year and asked himwhy he thought that was, he answered withouthesitation, ‘It was that camp you sent me to!’ ”

These children and teens, and the thousands likethem, are thousands of individual reasons thatyour annual giving is so critical. We know thateach of these young people or parents would loveto have the opportunity to thank each of youdirectly. In the absence of that opportunity, we

thank you on their behalf and on behalf of all ofthe youth you enable The Second Mile to serve.

Sincerely,

Bob Poole

Chairman of the Board

Jack Raykovitz, Ph.D.

In the past two Annual Reports, you have

heard me speak about our dream to build a

permanent home for Second Mile children,

families, and supporters: The Second Mile

Center for Excellence. I am pleased to

report that this year we have moved closer

to realizing this dream. Thanks to our

dedicated committee and many generous

donors, The Second Mile Campaign for Excellence is nearing itsPhase 1 goal and preparing to embark on Phase 2 of this fundraising

effort. As part of Phase 1, we will be building two components of

the Center for Excellence: the Outdoor Recreational Complex and

the Educational and Recreational Building.

The Outdoor Recreational Complex will include football and soccer

elds, baseball elds, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a

tness trail, a high ropes course, pavilions, and gazebos. With all

of these elements, The Center for Excellence will provide a place

for play and for learning. These outside spaces will be used for

playing large group games, providing breakaway areas for small

groups, facilitating initiatives, and best of all, they will help in the

promotion of an atmosphere where a kid can simply be a kid.The Educational and Recreational Building will include a multi-

purpose gymnasium, exercise facilities, classrooms, and dormitory

space. We are currently in the design phase of this building,

working with an owner’s representative and architects to design

a space that will best t our program needs and be a welcoming

space for all members of The Second Mile family. This building will

be the cornerstone of The Center for Excellence Campus, providing

the spaces we need to stage Friend events, run Challenge Program

weeks-in-residence, hold Friend Fitness workouts, conduct the

Leadership Institute, train volunteers to implement our programs

regionally, and even host some of our special events.

The possibilities The Center for Excellence represents are endless, and we are excited to have a place coming closer to fruition, a

place that will stand long into the future and represent The Second

Mile’s commitment to children and families. When I founded The

Second Mile, I envisioned an organization that would always keep

its promise to children, and I believe that, through The Center for

Excellence, we always will.

naming The Second Mile as beneciary, and/or the

execution of an estate note. We wish to thank the

members of this society for providing a foundation

for the future of our organization.

with Help and Hope for

nearly three decades.

Lynda and I have been

most fortunate to

experience, on a very

success of some of our

current and past Second Mile kids. We believe there is

no easier way, nor is there any better way, to secure

the future of The Second Mile and its ability to help

children for generations to come than planned giving.

Prevention ProgramsNittany Lion Tips• Each school year, two editions of Nittany Lion Tips are issued featuring Penn State

athletes offering short educational or motivational messages about personal or social

development. Each set contains 25 different Tips from student-athletes in sports that

include football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s gymnastics, and

wrestling. During the past year, more than 182,000 elementary, middle, and junior high

school students received Nittany Lion Tips from more than 1,500 school counselors and

other youth-service professionals, according to counselor surveys. Each professional

receiving Tips also receives the accompanying facilitators’ guide, which offers furtherideas and activities that address and expand on the ideas found on the cards.

Second Mile Leadership Institute• For four days each spring, students from across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania

attend The Second Mile Leadership Institute and gain the knowledge, encouragement,

and empowerment to make a difference in their school communities. Teams composed

of ve high school sophomores that represent a diverse cross-section of their schools,

along with a faculty mentor, attend workshops and planning sessions. The 2008 Leadership

Institute hosted a record 53 teams who attended presentations made by more than 72

presenters on topics ranging in scope from fundraising and publicity to group function

and communication styles. Groups left the Institute focused on implementing projects

pertaining to mentoring, incoming student orientation, school pride, and schoolbeautication. Additionally, six medalist teams were recognized from the 2007 Institute

for outstanding work and, in turn, received awards to continue their efforts.

“I just wanted to thank you for our envelope full of Nittany Tips cards. I use the

cards as discussion starters for my class. They love to collect the cards. It is a

great way to catch their interest. Many of the Tips tie into a unit that our school

counselor teaches. Thanks again for providing a great resource.”

 —School Counselor in Lycoming County

 A Leadership team learns

how to work together and

trust each other throughthis initiative activity.

“Our team was able to discuss and exchange opinions and

ideas. Most important of all, they were able to use the

ideas they learned from the session they attended to

develop the plan for their service project. In my opinion,

The Second Mile did a great job with my team.”

—Faculty Mentor from

Susquehanna County

The Angel SocietyWith this Annual Report, The Second Mile recognizes and thanks the members of The Angel

Society—those individuals, organizations, corporations, and foundations that have made

annual contributions to The Second Mile equal to or greater than $2,000 during The Second

Mile scal year, September 1, 2007, through August 31, 2008.

“Years ago, a young man wrote to me thanking The Second Mile for being the ‘wind beneath

his wings.’ His letter served as an inspiration in naming our annual giving society ‘The Angel

Society,’ our way of recognizing the signicance of our donors, who lift children up, showthem new horizons, and provide them with the skills they need to soar.”

PEAK (Prevention: Education and Awareness for Kids)• The PEAK Program continues to be used by teachers and counselors across

Pennsylvania. Since the release of the two videos, more than 1,100 school

counselors and teachers have used the PEAK modules, Choice of Champions

and Flow: The River Within, to help students learn to respond proactively to

negative peer pressure and improve their self-esteem. More than 530 teachers

and counselors have used the No Bullying Allowed! play kit to teach elementary

and middle school students about bullying prevention through an interactive

play. All three modules come equipped with facilitators’ guides that provide

additional opportunities for students and teachers to further put into practice theinformation from the modules.

Early Intervention ProgramsChallenge Program• During the ten one-week sessions of residence, Challenge Program participants

work on setting behavioral and academic goals as well as deciding on community

service projects for the upcoming school year. Collegiate counselors, professional

staff, and volunteers promote a positive environment and offer encouragement

that allows youngsters to work on areas such as developing better self-awareness

and learning to understand others. During the 2008 residential weeks, Challenge

Program staff encouraged 760 youngsters to believe that I Can, We Can, the

theme of this year’s program.

“My students beneted greatly from

acting out the play included in the No

Bullying Allowed! play kit. They were

really able to connect the ideas found in

the play with their school life.”

—School Counselor in Lehigh County

“Your program is excellent! I used it and

then lent it to another teacher in my

school, and she loved it so much she

wants one for herself. Our school really

appreciates the fact that The Second

Mile offers a program about bullying. It

has really improved how our students

relate to and interact with each other.”

• The Challenge Program experience does not end when a young person nishes

his or her residential week. The Second Mile staff provides additional support to

participants, their families, and their counselors through written, phone, or in-

person contact. During the 2007-2008 school year, Second Mile staff made more

than 9,200 contacts to participants and more than 4,800 contacts to their school

counselors to help them stay connected to the program and focused on their

goals. Additionally, 772 participants and their family members attended

30 mid-year events.

• Challenge Program participants, with the support of The Second Mile staff and

their school counselors, work hard throughout the school year to meet their goalsand thereby earn return trips to residential weeks the following year. As a result

of this hard work, school counselors nominated 480 youngsters who attended

residential weeks in 2007 for achievement certicates. Additionally, 80 youngsters

were singled out by their counselors for giving back to their communities and

received community service certicates.

Friend Fitness• The Friend Fitness Program focuses on helping adolescents achieve personal,

academic, and tness goals through mentoring and individualized strength

training exercises. With sites located in Clinton County, Chester County, and

the Centre Region, the Friend Fitness Program provided opportunities for

improvement to 141 teens in 2008. During twice-weekly sessions, 93 adultmentors assisted students in working on their goals. Additionally, there were 11

social and team-building activities such as picnics, group workouts, and luncheons

held for students and mentors.

“I wanted to thank you for all The Second Mile

does. I saw a dramatic change in a girl I work

with after her attendance in the Challenge

Program this past summer. She also credits

Friend• The Friend Program pairs elementary students with college students who act as their

mentors while they participate in healthy and educational activities together. During the

past year, 597 Young Friends from across the Commonwealth participated in the Friend

Program at six sites: Blair County, Centre Region, Clinton County, Lancaster County,

Lehigh Valley, and the Southeast Region. College Friends from Penn State University

Park, Penn State Altoona, Millersville, Lock Haven, and Villanova Universities as well as

from Cedar Crest and Muhlenberg Colleges acted as mentors and friends to their younger

counterparts. Fifty-one activities were held, including Health Adventures Days, Science

and Technology Days, and Award Picnics. Additionally, 686 volunteers, both adult and

student, assisted with these events.

Community-Based ProgramsChildren’s Scholarship Fund—Grants, Recognition, and Scholarships• The Children’s Fund offers support in three ways: by providing grants, scholarships,

and community service awards to youth across the Commonwealth. Assisting with

nancial needs outside of the coverage of other agencies or government programs,

Children’s Fund Grants help young people (ages birth to 18) afford such items as

clothing, school supplies, and extra-curricular activity registration fees. Over the

past year, Children’s Fund Grants were given to 65 young people, and hundreds of

additional children received non-monetary grants through the distribution of in-kind

donations, such as clothing. Post-Secondary Scholarships are available to former

Second Mile participants to assist with school-related expenses. Last year, The Second

Mile awarded 47 such scholarships. Additionally, 71 high school seniors graduating

It’s nice to come and have someone greet us and know

wonderful program for children like mine.”

THE POWER OF IN-KIND SUPPORT: Our Honor Roll of In-Kind Partners

Support through in-kind donations plays an important role in helping

The Second Mile provide opportunities for Pennsylvania children

and families. Some in-kind donations go directly to the children and

families served by The Second Mile, including event tickets, supplies

for program activities, and transportation of participants. Other in-

kind donations offset operating costs of programs and special eventsto allow a larger percentage of money raised to go to Second Mile

programs. These donations include everything from equipment storage

space and printing services to special event prizes and meals. In-

kind sponsors who contributed to special events were acknowledged

previously in conjunction with those events. We would like to highlight

here those additional in-kind donors who contributed goods or services

valued at $1000 or more this past scal year. The Second Mile received

$382,746 in in-kind donations in 2008.
