Foreword
In assembling materials for the volumes of The History and Literature of the Wind Band and Wind Ensemble the focus of my work was in music for ensembles of six wind instruments or larger. In the course of looking through many European libraries for such material, I was, of course, aware of an even more enormous repertoire of music for single winds or for small ensembles. Even though such repertoire was not central to my own research, it was always clear to me that this reper-toire was part of the history of wind ensembles. The music for smaller ensembles, for example, give us a record of the kind of music played in smaller palace rooms or for more private audiences. It was for these same circumstances that composers provided the repertoire given here for solo wind instruments. Among these the flute was a special problem for the intona-tion problems of the early form of the instrument caused it to be generally excluded from the larger indoor Hautboisten and Harmoniemusik ensembles. While the flute is therefore rarely mentioned in contemporary reviews of wind ensemble perfor-mances, we trust that the extensive list of solo flute repertoire included here will shed some light on their activities.
It was clear to me from the beginning that one lifetime would not be enough to write down information on every-thing I was seeing in European libraries, hence the limitation mentioned above, I did, from time to time, write down titles and call-numbers of some works for smaller ensembles which interested me for one reason or another. The purpose of this volume is to make these works and their sources available to whomever is interested.
As a matter of record, and for the purpose of helping estab-lish the known repertoire for solo and smaller ensembles of winds before 1900, I have included, in addition to the music which I found in European libraries, references to similar music found in the following three works:
1. [1] A Catalog published at the end of the eighteenth cen-tury in Vienna by Johann Traeg. Traeg was one of two music dealers in Vienna who maintained a business of
x Foreword
supplying on demand manuscript copies of music which he had on hand. His extensive collection gives us an important insight into works which existed at that time, but which were never published.
2. The Dictionary of Musicians (London, 1825) by John S. Sainsbury is one of the earliest encyclopedias of composers and their music. While his information is often incomplete, many composers even lacking first names, on the other hand, Sainsbury provides valuable and interesting first-hand personal information about many composers who are today virtually unknown to today’s performers.
3. Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (Basel: Barenre-iter, 1958). I have included all the references for solo and small ensemble music from this great modern encyclo-pedia, which I give following the abbreviation MGG. For the most part, inclusion of repertoire in this ency-clopedia can be taken to mean that the music probably actually still exists today. Often the articles in MGG do not give the library sources for each composition, but do preface their information by indicating the librar-ies where most of the composer’s music can be found. Therefore the reader should consult MGG for this infor-mation relative to the music he is interested in.
In the case of the composers and names of instruments and compositions for the music which I found in libraries, I have given here the spellings as they occur in the original sources.
David WhitwellAustin, Texas
As an abbreviation for wind instrumentation I use a code of 0000-0000, representing: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon - trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba.
Thus: 3000- means a work for three flutes -204 means a work for two trumpets and four trombones 1-1; 2 cornetts means bassoon, trumpet, and two cornetts.
