The Second District Dental Society will try to advo-cate and support our members during this time of uncertainty. I consider it an honor and a privilege. I will work hard to live up to that honor. I would like to thank the Executive Committee members in advance for their dedication and service to make our society suc-cessful. Please take advantage of the continuing education programs and the fellowship afforded at our meetings. Dr. Jack Gotcher and our program committee have provided another excellent agenda for the coming year. Please encourage other members to attend the meet-ings as their participation helps strengthen our society.
Thank you again and I look forward to seeing you at our meetings! Sincerely, Tim McConnell

Are you preparing your younger patients for their senior years? Topics covered include: Cracked tooth loss, Interim crowns, Splinting crowns, Changing occlu-sions, Occlusal guards & Locators.

Dr. Hope Watson is the vice chair of ADA Council on Dental Benefit Programs. This lecture will apply to all dental office employees and will help navigate the dental insurance maze. Continued education on dental benefit programs is not only necessary, but vital to the health of a dental prac-tice. Most dentists would agree that dental benefit understanding is a lot of trial-by-error and on-the-job training. This lecture will explain the basics of preferred provider organizations to help existing staff assist patients with those plans. Topics for discussion include: • The current dental plan marketplace. • PPO plan design and terminology. • Contract clauses and processing policies that affect revenue. • Avoiding coordination of benefits write-off mistakes. • How to file an effective and proper appeal. • How to talk to patients about their dental insurance.

Though often denigrated as fakery or wishful thinking, hypnosis has been shown to be a real
phenomenon with a variety of therapeutic uses—especially in controlling pain.
Dr. Michael Nash is a Professor Emeritus in Clinical Psychology at The
University of Tennessee. He was Editor of the International Journal of
Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis for many years. He has published
hundreds of research articles on the nature of hypnosis, and how clinicians
can empirically track patient improvement. He also has a practice in Clini-
cal Psychology more generally. He has treated many patients referred by
dentists for acute and chronic problems associated with dental treatments,
phobias, panic and more generally, smoking cessation, and pain. He
is also keenly aware of the challenges faced by dentists regarding patient
care. In this presentation, Dr. Nash will describe what hypnosis is, and what it is not. He starts
with the science, but quickly moves to patient case examples.

Oral and oropharyngeal cancer represents the eighth most common cancer worldwide and these diagnoses are increasing. While historically these cancers occurred in elderly men who exces-sively utilized tobacco and alcohol, the twenty-first century has ushered in a new cohort of pa-tients with oral and oropharyngeal cancer including Caucasian males who do not use tobacco or alcohol, and who disproportionately display cancer of the tongue and palatine tonsils. It is the purpose of this lecture to review the demographics and treatment strategies associated with these patients with an emphasis on the twenty-first century carcinogenic paradigm shift, particu-larly as it applies to the presence of human papillomavirus in these cancers. In addition, preven-tive measures will be discussed, including those related to HPV vaccination strategies.
Dr. Carlson serves as Professor and the Kelly L. Krahwinkel Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Ten-nessee Medical Center and director of the head and neck oncologic sur-gery fellowship program at the University of Tennessee Cancer Insti-tute. He received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania, his medical degree from the University of Miami, and his master’s degree in education from Harvard University. He performed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, his general surgery training at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, and his head and neck surgery training at the University of Miami.

plant supported therapy in a more sophisticated and profound way with greater accuracy, lower mobility and

dontal therapies, pocket reduction surgery, the role of aesthetic crown lengthening procedures and connec-
tive tissue grafting for recession. The role of the patient’s biotype will be discussed and what effect it plays on
long term sustainable esthetics. The value of converting thin to thick biotypes, will be discussed.
