A.1.6.3

Some dimensions used in this standard require a tight precision and others do not. For example, when performing hydraulic calculations more precision is required than when specifying a nominal dimension. An example is pipe sizes, where we typically refer to a nominal diameter rather than the exact diameter. The metric equivalents also have a set of generally accepted nominal measurements, and they are not a precise conversion from the “English Unit” nominal dimension. Throughout the standard the generally accepted nominal pipe sizes have been used. For example 1 in. pipe = 25 mm, 11⁄4 in. pipe = 32 mm, 11⁄2 in. pipe = 40 mm, and so forth. In other cases rounding is used, and the number of significant digits taken into account. For example, a 30 ft ceiling would be 9.144 m. This implies a level of precision that is higher than used for the original dimension, and a conversion to 9.1 m or even 9 m is more appropriate. Another example is that in the standard, 1 in. has been converted to 25 mm and not 25.4 mm, 2 in. to 50 mm, 6 in. to 150 mm, and so forth. Finally, locally available material can have different characteristics in countries that use metric units than are typically found in the U.S. Examples are things like standard door or window sizes, rack dimensions, and so forth. In these cases a soft an approximate conversion can also be used. Where softapproximate conversions have been used, it is acceptable for a designer or installer to use an exact or “hard" conversion rather than the soft approximate conversion used in the standard.

CommitteeStatement:

This SCR correlates Chapter 11 and 12 for design methods where adjacent hazards exist. Chapter 12 was revised during the first andsecond draft stages, however chapter 11 was not updated. The language accepted at the Second Draft Meeting for chapter 12 is beingincluded in Chapter 11 with editorial changes for clarity. The language accepted in Chapter 12 did not clearly state that the minimum twofoot dimension is from the hazard on each side. The intent of the section is a minimum 4 ft aisle, which is now clear.

Committee Statement

CommitteeStatement:

This is a correlation revision to copy the text from Chapter 16 and 17 into Chapter 13. Based on the storage heights referenced in thenew section 13.1.3.1 and 13.1.3.2, users may go to Chapter 13 and never find this guidance if it resides only in Chapters 16 and 17. Thisis not a technical change, just adding the requirement in multiple locations to make sure the reader finds this criteria.

Committee Statement

CommitteeStatement:

Section 16.1.6. applies the vertical in-rack sprinkler placement for CMSA and ESFR sprinklers to CMDA sprinklers that only requiresin-rack sprinklers beneath each solid shelf, not in every tier beneath the highest solid shelf. As such, the requirement for solid shelving inonly a portion of the rack is more demanding than solid shelving throughout the rack footprint. This revision does not make a technicalchange, simply coordinates the requirements based on the type of sprinkler used at the ceiling.

There are multiple section addressing the criteria for shelving design. Rather than simply listing two reference sections, thisrequirement would be more comprehensive to simply refer to solid shelving criteria in general.

CommitteeStatement:

There are multiple section addressing the criteria for shelving design. Rather than simply listing two reference sections, thisrequirement would be more comprehensive to simply refer to solid shelving criteria in general.

Second Correlating Revision No. 30-NFPA 13-2014 [ New Section after 17.1.5.7 ]

17.1.5.8 Where solid shelves obstruct only a portion of the rack, in-rack sprinklers shall be installed horizontally, within the flue a minimum of 4 ft (1.2m) beyond the end of the solid shelf, and vertically as follows:

(1) In accordance with 17.1.5.1 and 17.1.5.2 for CMDA sprinklers

(2) Beneath all tiers under the highest solid shelf for CMSA and ESFR sprinklers

Committee Statement

CommitteeStatement:

Section 17.1.5 applies the vertical in-rack sprinkler placement for CMSA and ESFR sprinklers to CMDA sprinklers that only requiresin-rack sprinklers beneath each solid shelf, not in every tier beneath the highest solid shelf. As such, the requirement for solid shelving inonly a portion of the rack is more demanding than solid shelving throughout the rack footprint. This revision does not make a technicalchange, simply coordinates the requirements based on the type of sprinkler used at the ceiling.

a The product is presumed to be in a plastic-coated package in a corrugated carton. If packaged in a metal foil, it can be considered Class I.

b Most batteries have a polypropylene case and, if stored empty, should be treated as a Group A plastic. Truck batteries, even where filled, should be considered a Group A plastic because of their thicker walls.

c As the openings in plastic crates become larger, the product behaves more like a Class III commodity. Conversely, as the openings becomesmaller, the product behaves more like a plastic.

d Tests clearly indicate that a synthetic or synthetic blend is considered greater than Class III.

e When liquor is stored in glass containers in racks, it should be considered a Class III commodity; where it is palletized, it should beconsidered a Class IV commodity.

In Table A.5.6.3, the following changes were not incorporated correctly in Terra View. As a result Table A.5.6.3 as well as the corresponding commodity classification table will need to be revised:

Remove the following:

Batteries, Dry cells (non‐lithium or similar exotic metals; in blister packing; cartoned

Flammable/Combustible Liquids ‐ Liquids; over 20 and up to 50 percent alcohol (e.g. alcoholic beverages, hair spray); up to 1 gallon (3.8 L) glass bottles or jars; in racks; cartoned – Class 3

Flammable/Combustible Liquids  ‐ Nail polish; up to 2 oz (59 ml) glass bottles or jars; cartoned – Class 4

Flammable/Combustible Liquids ‐ Nail polish; up to 2 oz (59 ml) plastic bottles or jars; cartoned – Group A, Unexpanded

Edit the following as shown:

Empty Containers – Rigid plastic (not including PET), greater than 32 oz (1 L) – Group A, Expanded

Plastic/Rubber ‐ PVC (polyvinyl chloride) products, up to 20 percent plasticizer ‐ Class III

Add the following as shown:

Empty Containers – Rigid plastic (not including PET), up to 32 oz (1 L) – Group A, Unexpanded

After reviewing the second draft in Terra View, we noticed that items 1‐3 listed below need to be implemented based on the intent of Figure 5.6.3.4.2 and the intent of the Class IV commodity. This was overlooked prior to submitting the final draft to NFPA because the figure was incorporated at the last minute. I’ll look to you to determine how best to have these changes incorporated at this stage of the process.

1. In Section 5.6.3.4.1, the word "cartoned" is missing between the words "a" and "product" so it should read "...be defined as a cartoned product,..."

2. The title of Figure 5.6.3.4.2 started with the word "Cartoned". As a result, Figure 5.6.3.4.2 is incorrect as follows: (1) the word "cartoned" is missing from the Class 3 definition and should say "Cartoned Class III

Page 104: Second Correlating Revision No. 8-NFPA 13-2014 [ New ... · PDF fileSecond Correlating Revision No. 8-NFPA 13-2014 ... AWWA C203, Coal-Tar Protective ... Second Correlating Revision

commodities...", (2) the word "cartoned" is missing from the Class 4 definition and should say "Cartoned Class IV commodities...", (3) the word "cartoned" was missing from the Group A definition and should say "following cartoned Group A plastics...", and (4) Items 3 and 4 listed under Group A Plastics should be removed from this figure.

3. It appears we left out defining cartoned and exposed nonexpanded plastics in Section 5.6.4.1.1. Right now we have a definition for cartoned and exposed expanded plastics but not one for cartoned unexpanded plastics when expanded plastic is present. Is it possible to edit the text as follows?

NEW: 5.6.4.1.1.1 If a cartoned commodity is more than 25 percent and up to 40 percent (by volume) of expanded plastic, it shall be protected as a cartoned unexpanded plastic.

EXISTING/RENUMBERED: 5.6.4.1.1.2 If a cartoned commodity is more than 40 percent (by volume) expanded plastic, it shall be protected as a cartoned expanded plastic.

NEW: 5.6.4.1.1.3 Exposed commodities containing greater than 5 percent by weight of unexpanded plastic, or greater than 5 percent and up to 25 percent by volume of expanded plastic, shall be protected as an exposed unexpanded plastic.

EXISTING/RENUMBERED: 5.6.4.1.1.4 Exposed commodities containing greater than 25 percent by volume expanded plastic shall be protected as an exposed expanded plastic.

4. It should be noted that the commodity classification labels for Class 1 through 4 in Table A.5.6.3 do not use the Roman numeral format

5. For a better presentation, consider reorganizing and renaming the commodities under “Empty Containers” to “Containers, Empty” and “Plastic Containers” to “Containers, Plastic” so that all containers are grouped. In addition, do the same for “Noncombustible Liquids” to “Liquids, Noncombustible” and “Flammable/Combustible Liquids” to “Liquids, Flammable/Combustible” so that all liquids are grouped.

Matt, if you have any questions on the information provided above, please feel free to let me know. I’ve copied in Angѐle in the event I misrepresented any of her feedback.

Flammable/Combustible Liquids ‐ Liquids; over 20 and up to 50 percent alcohol (e.g. alcoholic beverages, hair spray); up to 1 gallon (3.8 L) glass bottles or jars; palletized; cartoned – Class 4

Flammable/Combustible Liquids ‐ Liquids; over 20 and up to 50 percent alcohol (e.g. alcoholic beverages, hair spray); up to 1 gallon (3.8 L) plastic bottles or jars; cartoned – Class 4

Flammable/Combustible Liquids  ‐ Nail polish; up to 2 oz (59 ml) glass bottles or jars; cartoned – Class 4

Flammable/Combustible Liquids ‐ Nail polish; up to 2 oz (59 ml) plastic bottles or jars; cartoned – Group A, Unexpanded

Food Products – Non‐Frozen, Butter; whipped spread – Class 3

Housing Materials / Appliances ‐ Light fixtures; nonplastic; cartoned – Class 2.

Miscellaneous ‐ Fertilizers; nitrates; bagged – Class 2

Miscellaneous – Fertilizers; phosphates; bagged – Class 1

Miscellaneous – Skis, Wood, Class 3

Noncombustible Liquids; less than 5 gallon (18.9 L) plastic containers ‐ Class 1

Plastic/Rubber ‐ PVC (polyvinyl chloride) products, greater than 20 percent plasticizer – Group A, Unexpanded

Page 123: Second Correlating Revision No.

Flammable/Combustible Liquids ‐ Liquids; over 20 and up to 50 percent alcohol (e.g. alcoholic beverages, hair spray); up to 1 gallon (3.8 L) glass bottles or jars; palletized; cartoned – Class 4

Flammable/Combustible Liquids ‐ Liquids; over 20 and up to 50 percent alcohol (e.g. alcoholic beverages, hair spray); up to 1 gallon (3.8 L) plastic bottles or jars; cartoned – Class 4

Flammable/Combustible Liquids  ‐ Nail polish; up to 2 oz (59 ml) glass bottles or jars; cartoned – Class 4

Flammable/Combustible Liquids ‐ Nail polish; up to 2 oz (59 ml) plastic bottles or jars; cartoned – Group A, Unexpanded

Food Products – Non‐Frozen, Butter; whipped spread – Class 3

Housing Materials / Appliances ‐ Light fixtures; nonplastic; cartoned – Class 2.

Miscellaneous ‐ Fertilizers; nitrates; bagged – Class 2

Miscellaneous – Fertilizers; phosphates; bagged – Class 1

Miscellaneous – Skis, Wood, Class 3

Noncombustible Liquids; less than 5 gallon (18.9 L) plastic containers ‐ Class 1

Plastic/Rubber ‐ PVC (polyvinyl chloride) products, greater than 20 percent plasticizer – Group A, Unexpanded

Page 144: Second Correlating Revision No.

I’ve copied in Angѐle in the event I misrepresented any of her feedback.

a Most batteries have a polypropylene case and, if stored empty, should be treated as a Group A plastic. Truck batteries, even where filled, should be considered a Group A plastic because of their thicker walls.

b As the openings in plastic crates become larger, the product behaves more like Class III. Conversely, as the openings become smaller, theproduct makeup behaves more like a plastic.

Miscellaneous ‐ Fertilizers; nitrates; bagged – Class 2

Miscellaneous – Fertilizers; phosphates; bagged – Class 1

Miscellaneous – Skis, Wood, Class 3

Noncombustible Liquids; less than 5 gallon (18.9 L) plastic containers ‐ Class 1

Plastic/Rubber ‐ PVC (polyvinyl chloride) products, greater than 20 percent plasticizer – Group A, Unexpanded

Page 156: Second Correlating Revision No.
