STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be ex-alted.” - MATTHEW 23:12

Jesus gave His life to serve, not to be served. Putting other’s needs before our own needs is a sign of be-coming a mature disciple, of following Jesus’ example. Humility is really a sign of a strength. By putting other’s needs first we declare to the world that we are putting our complete trust in God. When we align our thoughts and actions with God’s plan for us, the result is Joy and Peace.

Please pray for all the faithful departed

COMMITMENT WEEKEND

It has arrived! For a little more than a month, with Deacon John I have been beating the stewardship drum and singing the stewardship song in Bulletin articles, homilies, and a mailing that went out to all registered parishioners. As the saying goes: ONE MORE TIME! I realize that this article could be construed as overkill. "Enough about stewardship," you may be saying. Realizing that too much of anything can do more harm than good, I still feel the need to renew this journey into our Season of Stewardship. Why? Because as I have said before and you have heard and/or read before, stewardship is at the core of parish vitality, and parish vitality should be on everyone's mind as we draw closer to RENEW MY CHURCH implementation. In some faith traditions, stewardship—the sharing of time, talent and treasure with the local church—is a rule. Parishioners are told in no uncertain terms what is expected of them in how much they are to contribute financially and how many hours they are to volunteer in service. Failure to meet these expectations results in the exclusion of individuals or families from membership in the congregation. In short, “Come up with the cash and the time, or go elsewhere.” That elsewhere could well be a Catholic parish, because such imposed tithing is NOT consistent with our tradition, praise the Lord. In Catholicism, tithing is a matter of individual conscience rather than imposition by a pastor or finance council. Parishioners are asked to give of themselves, but the motivation comes from a sense of gratitude to God and a desire to "give something back," instead of by external decree. If more motivation is needed, one can visit the Gospel and Jesus' many exhortations to service and generosity. Recall the Gospel reading just last weekend when Jesus says that the greatest good we can accomplish is to love God and love neighbor. However, this love is not a mere mental process, but one that takes on tangible expression. Before moving into the commitment process, may I share with you some developments during our Season of Stewardship: some positive, some not so much. As to the positive, two weeks ago Barb Hecker and I trained 10 new altar servers, and they have been placed on our weekend schedule. This is a real "shot in the arm," for our roll of servers has dwindled over the past year or two. In addition, I have been approached by a parishioner interested in serving on our Finance Committee, and eager to share ideas about new forms of fundraising. Finally, tomorrow at our meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council, two new members will be welcomed into that important advisory body. On the flip side, I regret to inform you that St. Cornelius is on the brink of approaching the Archdiocese for an operating loan because we are not able to pay all of our bills. (Last weekend's boiler issue hasn't helped the situation.) This is a RED FLAG where vitality is concerned, since one of the criteria for evaluating parish vitality is how well a community can fulfill its financial responsibilities. Some of our invoices are coming marked "past due" because the funds to pay them are not available. This trend needs to be reversed quickly, and our financial report again must be writ-ten in black, not red ink. Sadly, our collections for the month of October have shown no real increase, and the budget deficit continues to increase. This weekend needs to move us in the right direction. The commitment cards that were sent out, and are available in the pews, are for each of us to make a statement about how we will be the vital com-munity that Jesus calls us to be. Please complete the card with your expression of enhanced stewardship and return it in today's regular collection, or drop it off at the rectory. If you are still un-decided, you can do it next weekend, or even the weekend following. But don't wait too long; Saint Cornelius is depending on YOU! Thank you for answering the call. Thank you for your time, talent, and treasure offered in the service of the Lord.

NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENES WEEK,

NOV. 5-11, 2017

Don’t be afraid of what God asks of you! It is worth saying yes to God! In him we find our joy. Pope Francis Our world is broken. Violence and corruption surround us. Millions of people feel lost and alone. They desperately need new meaning in their lives. They need hope.. They need Christ. And Catholic priests and religious are models of Christ in our world. We need them to be people of compassion. People of conviction. People who—like Christ—are willing to give everything they have to heal a broken world.

People who are open to considering Christ’s call should feel free to explore discernment programs. For informa-tion, contact the Vocation Office, 720 North Wabash (312-534-8298).

FROM THE PARISH NURSE...

Although, we all know that death is a part of life, it is, in the end, still unexpected. Loosing a loved one changes the way we under-stand and experience life. The absence of a parent, spouse, child or friend, is always painful. We are filled with an inner emptiness, a grief that is unique to each one of us, and yet universal to all of human-ity. Jesus knew the pain of loosing his friend Lazarus, as recorded in the Gospel of John chapter 11 verse 35, “Jesus began to weep.” Dealing with the death of a loved one takes time, and time is what Jesus is offering to us during this month of November. Although we grieve our losses, we are comforted by the people who come along-side, bringing the presence of Jesus who is our peace and everlasting hope.

Sr. Ann Marie

The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for a loved one – living or de eased – is a beautiful part of our Catholic tradition. We still have openings in our 2017 mass book so think about honoring a loved one today, by requesting a mass intention. Please call (773-283-5222)or stop by the Rectory to arrange a Mass.

Thank You Fr. Dan from the 2nd Grade RE class for our recent field trip!

We wish to extend our thanks and gratitude to Fr. Dan for taking the time to provide a guided tour of St. Cornelius Church on Sunday, October 29 to the 2nd grade students of the Religious Education pro-gram who are preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and receive Holy Communion for the first time. The tour was both fas-cinating and informative as it covered every corner of our Parish from baptistry to sacristy. A favorite moment for all the students was when they were allowed to taste unconsecrated bread which we learned, to one student's disappointment, could not be buttered. Additional insights from our young students included questions such as "Does the Infant King Statue show Jesus when he was in 2nd grade?" and the observation, after seeing the closets of colorful vestments hung neatly in rows, "Father Dan sure has a lot of clothes". Thank you Fr. Dan for a very memorable and enjoy-able experience! The 2nd Grade Religious Education Class (Andrea, Andre, Collin, Dominic, Elyssa, Henry, Jailene, Lizzy, Mia, Nora, Olivia, Rosie, & Valerie)
