Your attention in -invitedto the condition of Palmet-to Road in Boca Ratonwhich is a county highwayfrom A1A west to No. 7.

Some years ago, a tem-porary wooden bridge wasput over the canal whichdrains the airport. Thisbridge is out of line withPalmetto Road making %kmk in the highway.

Just south of the bridge, and at the point of kink, thehill waa not cut down anddrivers cannot see a carcoming toward them.

Furthermore, the old 15-ft. black top was left inplace in the hill and the roadwas not widened to standardwidth as at the bridge.

The combined hiddensurve, steep hill, and narrow

Jan was a happy baby whose bubbling laughter broughtresponding smiles from everyone. Her small world wasfilled with love and peace, warmth and comfort. Crownedwith buttercup tinted silken curls, blue eyes sparkling mis-chievously, Jan lived her ten-month life fully.

That is, until one Easter Sunday when she awoke filledwith indescribable pain unable to move her tormentedbody.

What fallowed seemed like a nightmare, The doctor'svisit, the long ambulance ride when every turn of thewheels, raced Jan's struggling breath. The dreaded word wasspoken . . . polio.

Weeks, then months passed while Jan'fought for theright to live, to take breaths with her frail chest muscle*without the aid of mechanics. Daily visits when mothercrooned comfort to her baby, hardly able to hear Jan's be-seeching eyes. What had happened to her happy world?

Long vigils ended when she left the hospital, a hauntingshadow of her former self. Next came months and finallyyears of passive exercise, therapy and constant watchful-ness of the paralyzed hip and leg. Thrice weekly visitsto the hospital out-patient department, an all day effort.Regular check-ups were given by doctors, foremost intheir field.

One muscle operation, then another, and finally thelast one. Steel braces locked Jan's leg as she struggled tolearn to walk. First steps were taken clinging to parallelbars then graduating to assisting hands. Finally one joy-ous day she stood alone and the second battle was won.

No one measures the life of a child in price but Jan'streatment had cost thousands of dollars over what her dis-traught parents could raise.

That was when the Polio Foundation stepped in. Withmoney contributed from the March of Dimes, hundreds ofMatherlr Marches and generous individuals, bought a fu-turf for a little-golden haired girl.1 T . h a t S r e a t e r 'hanks could a donor want than to see alaughing young ady of eight come careening down a side-walk on battered rollerskates, the only reminder of her or-deal a slight difference in the size of one leg and a host ofpainful memories.• A priceless gift for Jan and the many others like her, born too soon for the Salk vaccine. Palm Beach County tax-payers were assured by thecounty commission this weekthat whatever value is placedon property by .the countyassessor, the board will makeevery effort to keep tax billsthe same — or less if poss-ible.
