Their mission is to bring the educational resources and waterfowl habitat restoration expertise of Ducks Unlimited to Dutchess County. In turn, the Chapter will introduce non-hunting conservationists and outdoor enthusiasts to DU’s important work in New York State, protecting waterfowl habitat along the Atlantic Migratory Flyway. Both the Hudson River and Harlem Valleys are within the Atlantic flyway, and their wetlands are used by ducks as an important stopover and breeding habitat. In Dutchess County, this premier waterfowl habitat is provided in abundance by the Great Swamp Ducks Unlimited (DU) is the world leader in wetlands conservation. As a New York-founded conservation non-profit, Ducks Unlimited conserves, restores, and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl. The habitats are also crucial for other wildlife and human habitation. In 2012 Ducks Unlimited launched a new initiative, “Completing the Cycle,” to address the needs of Atlantic flyway waterfowl throughout their entire lifecycle. Thus far, DU has conserved more than 500,000 acres within the Atlantic Flyway zone; of those, 44,000 acres are in New York State. The Second Annual Great Swamp Shoot and Conservation Program will help realize DU’s vision of sustaining an abundant population of waterfowl, sufficient enough to fill the skies today, tomorrow, and forever. The funds raised from this event will provide the direct income necessary for DU to advance its work locally and nationally.
