Dear Sponsor:
Unlike any time in history, our children need mentors the most. Far too many children in
Florida are growing up in single family homes, schools plagued with violence, and minimal
contact with positive caring adults. Our program, Situational Environmental CircumstancesMentoring Project (SEC), is a conceptual framework designed to address issues related to
school discipline, school dropouts and graduation rates. This model has been implemented
and proven effective in delinquency, foster care, and educational systems in Central Florida.
The SEC Mentoring Project in Orlando seeks to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of
the education process and environment, thereby improving the life chances and choices of
at risk youth, more specifically, Black Males. Additionally, the project seeks to encourage,
expose and prepare Black Males for educational and career opportunities available to themin their quest to become successful and productive members of the community through
partnerships with Big Bend Community Based Care and Professional Opportunities for
Program for Students (POPS).
Program Components
1. The SEC Mentoring Project in Orlando will serve 60 at-risk students fromRobinswood, Meadowbrook, and Memorial middle schools and Evans, Jones and
Oak Ridge high schools in Orlando Florida. These schools were selected based on
suspension, expulsions, disciplinary referrals, crime/delinquent incidents,
standardize test scores and percentage of students from low income families.
3. The SEC Project will utilize college mentors from FAMU Law School and otherlocal colleges and universities that have similar backgrounds or life experiences
as the at-risk youth they will be mentoring.
5. The SEC Project will provide targeted training to high-risk youth, parents andeducators on effective strategies and activities to engage at-youth utilizing
researched-based on non-traditional methods (i.e. Hip Hop, Social media, etc.).
