THE INTERFACE OF CREATING A MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT ON A SITE THAT SITS ON THE BORDER OF A CITY CENTER PROVIDES US WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTERROGATE
WHAT A BOARDER IS AND HOW IT IS DEFINED. OUR DEFINITION OF A BOARDER SAYS THAT IS SHOULD BLEND IN AND OUT NOT BY WALL BUT BY LIGHT, TONE, PATTERN AND SHIFT-ING. BY BLENDING THESE BORDERS WE WISH TO MAXIMIZE THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR IN-

Costa Ricas population is increasing by 50%, yet in its capital, San Jose, population is declining. The people are leaving because of a lack of secure transpor tation and investment in their city. An increased sense of security and value are the only ways to reinvigorate San Jose, allowing for future growth says Alvardo Rojas, Director of Universidad del Diseno, architecture school in Costa Rica.

rica_BRT has two areas of intervention, the Transist corridor (rica_BRT) and the Transit Center (Site). The rica_BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) addresses ease and security of personal travel, as well as
integrates a larger infrastructure into the current transpor tation system. Rica_BRT is a sophisticated transit corridor for alternative personal transpor tation devices such as bicycles, electric scooters and pedestrian-only roads. A multi-lane dedicated bus boulevard creates an internal highway through-
out San Jose Costa Rica. The Transit center is designed to regenerate of a brown f ield site back into the urban fabric of San Jose.
The Transit center (the site) is located in a brown f ield site that is central to the downtown districts and to many residential communities that would have easy access to its offerings. It is the
belief of rica_BRT that it should be carved into an existing urban city and that public transit can also grow from the inside out.

THE CLAIM: To fully provide for the next generation, the School of the future will have to accommodate ever-changing obstacles presented by the ever-changing world. Challenged by a evolving climate and a growing population, the school of the future will need to be equipped with the ability to adapt and grow to these obstacles. The f irst chal-lenges are simple; protect the child and there ability to learn.
The Space framed school proposes an oppor tunity to address these obstacles while providing the students with a dynamic learning environment..
THE RESPONSE: Space Framed Elementary is located at the point of intersection of some of the most highly traveled highways of California. This makes the site toxic. To respond to the highway pollution problem
the school building forms a large perimeter around the outdoor play space and will act as a f ilter between the polluted air and the student. This school is not only a protected and dynamic learning environment but it is a
f ilter that can adapt to the challenges of any site.
The structural system of the school responds to the challenge of population growth. It is formed by the char-acteristics of a space frame. The space frame allows for f lexibility in the program areas at any scale. The
space frame can transform for a large auditorium into a small childs play space. PROJECT KEY TERMS _ vocabulary

As a visitor to Embudo/Dixon, it seems to me that miscommunications and misunderstandings between the newer and the older members of the community have divided Embudo/Dixon. The division lies between insiderthose who understand the acequiaand outsiderthose who dont. Outsiders and insiders are keeping their guard up. There is no vulnerability between neighbors.
Dixon/Embudo is an acequia community. To maintain an acequia com-munity requires knowledge of how the acequia works and responsibil-ity to maintain it. Currently responsibility is shared unequally. Respon-sibly must be shared and cannot be divided by geographical location. The only way to make responsibility shared is through communication.
To promote a strategy of par ticipation, I propose a watershed institute as a restaurant. This restaurant is designed around the full par ticipation of those inside. Embudo has many valuable resources to offer. This restaurant will function by using those resources carefully. Food resources will only be seasonal. The restaurant will only con-tinue to benef it from what is provided by the agricultural community of Dixon. In return the restaurant will provide farmers with fer tilizer, and will provide all landowners adjacent to the restaurant with storm water management.

Finally it will offer the community techniques, systems, and environ-mental controls that can be adapted to other building projects. Af-fordability, availability, price and ease of construction have all driven the design. The restaurant has been designed to use abundant local resources to process waste, water, food, and production in many dif-ferent forms to meet the challenges of this site and this community.
This restaurant will serve as a tool for mending the broken lines of communication needed for the survival of Embudo/Dixon. Without a venue that celebrates local resources, communication cannot exist. Without communication, an active effor t to sustain Embudo/Dixon cannot exist.

STORM WATER INTERVENTION:FRESH WATER: IN THIS MICRO WATERSHED OF ONE MILE ROUGHLY 1 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER RUSHED DOWN IN 15 MINUTES.FRESH STORM WATER FLOODS THE ARROYO AND SURROUNDING AREA. AT THE BASE OF THE BUILDING THE ACEQUIA RUNS WHICH CREATES A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IN THE MORNING.
HAY BAILES: HAY BALES ARE STACKED AND SET IN THE ARROYO BED TO SLOW DOWN WATER BEFORE REACHING GABION.
GABIONS: GABION BAGS FILTER SILT FROM THE RUSHING STORM WATER AND ACT TO SLOW DOWN THE FORCE OF THE WATER
CISTERNS: 8 4000 GALLON CISTERNS, STORE THE WATER THAT HAS BEEN SLOWED DOWN AND FILTERED BY THE GABIONS AND HAY BAILES.
COMMUNITY TABLE EXPERIENCE:PROGRAM:THE SPACE IS ORGANIZED AROUND THE KITCHEN. EATING AND DINNING ARE PART OF THE SAME EXPERIENCE. THIS SPACE IS FOUNDED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNICATION AND WITHOUT EACH PERSON PARTICIPATING IN ALL PROCESS, COMMUNICATION WILL FAIL.
COMPOSTING: INCORPORATED IN THE PROGRAM IN A PLACE TO COMPOST WAIST FOR THE RESTAURANT AND THE COMMUNITY. COMMUNITY COMPOSTING GOES TO CREATED COMPOSTED CHECK DAMS THAT WILL COVER THE LAND-SCAPE TO HELP MANAGE STORM WATER AND RESTART COMPOSTING WILL GO TOWARD MANAGING FOOD WAIST. THE FOOD WASTE COMPOST WILL BE GIVING TO THE LOCAL AGRICULTURE COMMUNITY OF EMBUDO.
WASTE WATER: WILL BE PROCESSED BY A CONSTRUCTED WET LAND .
SAND WALLS: ACT AS THERMAL MASS THAT WILL COOL AND HEAT THE BUILDING.
SAND ROOF: WILL ACT AS A PASSIVE AIR CONDITIONER.
ORIENTATION:IN THE CONTEXT OF EMBUDO THE SITE IS LOCATED JUST BEHIND THE DOWN TOWN SHOPS. IT IS THE FIRST BUILDING TO EXPERIENCE THE WATER FROM THIS MICRO WATERSHED AND THEREFORE CAN MAXIMIZE THE USE OF THE STORM WATER AND IT IS ALSO THE FIRST LAYER OF DEFENCE IN PREVENTING STORM WATER TO AFFECT THE SMALL RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY SURROUNDING IT.
THE BUILDING ORIENTATION IS SUCH THAT A WIND PASSES THROUGH THE NORTH WESTERN WIDOWS IN THE MORNING AND SOUTH EASTERN DOOR IN THE EVENING. THE SITE IS WELL VEGETATED AND WELL WATERED, WHICH WILL HEWITH THE HEAT OF THE SUMMER. THE SITE IS ACCESSIBLE BY CAR OR BY FOOT AND ALLOWS FOR A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE WATERSHED.

The LA River Pavilion is an Explora-tion of how a space can be inf luenced
by information.
The site for the pavilion is located at a point of the LA river that is use
frequently by pedestrians. Exess-able mostly by foot, the information
pavilion was meant to be a place that the community could gather for public
meeting or debates of any kind. The Information pavillion could also provide
it occupants with newels and history of the LA river.

Massing is not only the outward shape of a building; its also the projection of shape, plan organization, spatial and sectional type, and faade. Massing works from the interior to the exterior and back again.
