Welcome to the 2016 edition of Axe Magazine, an annual publication aiming to provide a richer, deeper, more enjoyable guide to everything that The Axe Valley has to offer.

The Axe Valley boasts a wealth of attractions and idyllic scenery. Situated within

the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the valley is home to market

towns like Axminster, the coastal resort of Seaton and the fishing village of Beer.

The powerful winding river at its heart expands at Colyford into a large estuary, a

bird watcher’s paradise and a ideal spot to take a stroll.

2016 will see the launch of the new Seaton Jurassic Visitor Centre, which with it

brings a focal point for visitors to the Jurassic Coast. Find out more details about

what is on offer on page 16.

A WEEK IN THE AXE VALLEYW O R D S : L u c i e S i m i c

The River Axe crosses Dorset, Somerset and Devon and rises near Beaminster in Dorset, flowing west then south by

Axminster, joining the English Channel at Axmouth near Seaton in Lyme Bay.

Although a shallow, non-navigable river, Axmouth has some boating activity and is a haven for bird watchers where Little Grebes nest and Sedge Warblers can be seen.

At the heart of the Axe Valley is the market town of Axminster, made famous by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen and Deli. A short drive from the Jurassic Coast and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Axe Valley is the perfect location for any explorer – foodie or fossil hunter.

The neighbouring town of Seaton boasts the historic Seaton Tramway – which operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton. The picturesque route travels alongside the River Axe Estuary through two nature reserves and gives an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life.

The picturesque fishing village of Beer will offer even the biggest train enthusiast something to smile about. Home to Pecorama, bring out your inner child and ride the Beer Heights Light Railway, considered by many the finest 7¼ inch gauge railway in Britain.

Don’t miss:

- The Axe Valley Bird and Animal Park, near Axminster, a small attraction that boasts all kids of animals and where visitors can get involved.

- Be sure to stop by the River Cottage Canteen and Deli for lunch or indulge in a slice of cake.

- Take a trip to Beer to pick up some fresh fish, browse the beach-themed shops and take a boat trip out to sea.

GEOCACHINGW O R D S & T I P S : R o s s P a c k m a n

While the wealth of walks available on the Jurassic Coast are irresistible to many, it can be more of a challenge enticing the kids

to accompany you. If your youngsters are proving resistant, the prospect of an electronic treasure hunt might be enough to change their minds!

As a modern descendent of Dartmoor’s historic ‘letterboxing’, geocaching involves navigating to a specific set of real-world co-ordinates, then attempting to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Today, Geocaching.com lists over two and a half million global geocaches, ready to be found by aspiring explorers. The required information can either be downloaded free from the website to a GPS device, or accessed via Groundspeak’s official smartphone app.

The ‘caches’ themselves come in a variety of flavours and sizes, from thumbnail ‘nanos’ to recycled military ammo crates.

‘Traditional’ caches provide a (theoretically) straightforward hunt, with the container concealed at the headline co-ordinates. ‘Multi-caches’ involve a series of containers, each leading in turn to the next, while ‘mystery’ caches demand Sherlock-level powers of deduction, with completion of a puzzle required to discover the location of the treasure.

As a basic requirement, all caches contain a logbook to sign. In addition, many will hold ‘swaps’, small toys and trinkets that mini ‘cachers can take home, as long as they replace them with items of equal or greater value.

The foundations of the geocaching phenomenon were laid in May 2000 with the US Government’s relaxation of ‘selective availability’, instantly improving the accuracy of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices worldwide.

Following this development, an American computer consultant by the name of Dave Ulmer hid a bucket full of goodies in the Oregon woods and posted the location co-ordinates online, in doing so instigating the first ever ‘GPS Stash Hunt’. At the same time, Ulmer laid down the first cardinal rule of geocaching; ‘Take some stuff, leave some stuff ’.

My own geocaching adventure began in 2011, with a hunt in a Bristol park on a rainy and overcast November day. On returning to the Jurassic Coast, I wasted no time in seeking out more caches in the area and to date have found over 600, both at home and in more exotic locations including Iceland and the Caribbean.

Geocaching provides a fantastic incentive to explore new areas, with many ‘caches leading to hidden local curiosities or landmarks off the beaten track. Some geocachers hide their caches in convenient loops, making for a perfect half-day adventure. My own River Lym Walk series leads treasure hunters on an upstream stroll towards the village of Uplyme, taking in beautiful woodland, a historic mill and the pastoral watermeadows of ‘Bumpy’ on the way.

It’s easy to embark on your own treasure hunting career. Apart from a GPS device or smartphone, all you need to get started is a pen and sturdy pair of walking boots. If you’re bringing any little ‘cachers, it’s also worth bringing a selection of small toys that they can swap for any hidden loot that takes their fancy.

The Cave Troll’s Lair (GCTDF6)One of the most highly rated caches on the Jurassic Coast with 156 ‘favourite’ points, The Cave Troll’s Lair near Beer involves a perilous scramble into a former quarry adit.

Forgotten Paths (GC4F011)Hidden around the midway point of the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve, this jumbo-sized cache was hidden to commemorate my completion of the South West Coast Path. There will be mud.

No one could accuse Seaton Jurassic of having limited ambitions. It promises to take you on a trip to witness the birth of our planet,

the origins of life on Earth and to experience how the landscapes and life of today’s Jurassic Coast have come to be.

So how do you tell a story of this magnitude? Well, through timetravel, obviously!

Visit Seaton Jurassic and be transported fi rst to Victorian times, when Seaton and its surrounding coastal communities were at the World’s centre of learning about life, a place where fossil-hunters, geologists and evolutionists combined to uncover the secrets hidden in the rocks of the Jurassic Coast.

This is not an old-time museum experience. There are no glass cases with ‘do not touch’ signs at Seaton Jurassic. Instead you’ll fi nd yourself in the drawing room of a Victorian country house. Here you’re free to explore, with maps to unfurl, fossil and rock draws to open, instruments to handle and one or two surprises along the way!

All the time you and your fellow time travellers will be getting ready for tackling the next step on your journey – back into ‘deep time’. Enter the world’s only working time ship, set the dials and turn the hand cranks and you’re off, taking fl ight to the Jurassic world of 200-145 million years ago where you’ll come face to face with huge marine reptiles, all here in Seaton!

Survive this and Seaton Jurassic has more in store. Feel extremely small in the giant rockpool, a place where you’ll have to adapt to survive the tides and the eyes of a fearsome pack of hungry predators. Run, hide or just become one of those species that didn’t quite make it in the long evolutionary fi ght for life – it’ll be for you to decide your fate!

Seaton Jurassic does have a tranquil side. Its wildlife gardens combine water play with a space to stop, look and link yourself with stories from the local landscape.

Of course, there is also a great café serving delicious local food, a gift shop and full accessibility, along with all the other things you’d want from a top attraction. As you leave Seaton Jurassic you’ll have been of a journey like no other, one that will make you see life in a different way.

We can’t wait to see you there!

We are a bakery… so at our heart is bread making.

It defines us, in that it’s a simple process using simple

ingredients – flour, water, a little salt and a lot of patience

– all done on a daily basis.

Since the dawn of civilisation, folk have gathered at a

bakery and waited to get their bread. We too are a place

to gather, gossip and to be sociable. The difference –

apart from about 10,000 years – is that now you can

have a coffee as well while you wait.

Eating and drinking at the Bakery is like going to a

friend’s house so being sociable is a must. At a friend’s

house you’re expected to help yourself, not be waited on

and to eat what’s on the table.

Everything you put in your mouth in our place is

While winemaking may seem the exclusive reserve of balmy Mediterranean locales, the Jurassic Coast enjoys a temperate maritime climate equally suited to the creation of delicious traditional vintages.

A taste of the Jurassic Coast

Commanding a central location in the idyllic Axe Valley, the award-winning Lyme Bay Winery was founded by Nigel

Howard in 1992 and today is supported by a growing and diverse team of wine lovers, growers and makers. Making the most of bountiful local ingredients, the Lyme Bay Winery is dedicated to producing delicious English Wines, country wines, ciders, meads and liqueurs.

The winery’s dedicated team hand-pick nettles from around the winery hedgerows, grow elderflowers on site and tap local Birch trees for their Birch Wine. For their English Wines, Lyme Bay use grapes from 26,000 vines in affiliated vineyards within a stone’s throw of the winery, making the most of the area’s long, warm growing season.

When it comes to upholding the Jurassic Coast‘s long tradition of cider making, Lyme Bay Winery use only freshly-pressed juice from locally grown traditional cider apple varieties such as Dabinett, Kingston Black and Yarlington Mill. The passion that the Lyme Bay Winery team put into their creations is reflected in the wealth of accolades they have received, including numerous Taste of the West awards and Great Taste Producer accreditation. Many of Lyme Bay Winery’s beverages are inspired by traditional recipes, partnered with up-to-date production techniques to ensure the best of old and new.

For the chance to browse (or even sample!) their full range, Lyme Bay Winery welcome visitors to visit The Winery Shop, situated just fifteen minute’s drive west of Lyme Regis and widely signposted. As well as their own produce, Lyme Bay Winery are also proud to distribute wonderful local products from the Otter Brewery, Branscombe Vale Brewery, the Somerset Cider Brandy Company and Annings Fruit Ciders.

The Winery Shop is open 9.30am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday throughout the year, with weekend openings beginning from mid-March onwards.

TAUNTON STOP LINEW O R D S : R o s s P a c k m a n

Though the Axe Valley today presents the almost perfect rural idyll with its rolling hills and meandering waterways, at the onset of the second World War it stood as one of the first lines of defence against foreign aggression.

In anticipation of a land-based invasion by the Nazis, 50 defensive lines were constructed by the military across England, among them the 50-mile ‘Taunton Stop Line’. Planned under the leadership

of General Sir Edmund Ironside in June 1940, the Taunton Stop Line began at Axmouth in the south, passed Axminster and Chard along the natural barrier of the River Axe, shadowed the Great Western Railway to Ilminster before ultimately meeting with the east-west ‘GHQ’ line near Highbridge in Somerset. Using a combination of geographical features and man-made fortifications to create a continuous defence, the Stop Line was intended to do just that, to prevent the movement of armoured vehicles and troops from the west until Army reinforcements could repulse the attack.

Built in collaboration by private contractors and Army personnel, an impressive 18,000 pillboxes were built nationwide in just six weeks. The Stop Line itself included over 300 pillboxes, as well as machine and anti-tank gun emplacements, anti-tank ditches and infantry trenches. Between Axmouth and Axminster, the Stop Line featured a series of pillboxes along the eastern bank of the River Axe and 16-pounder gun emplacements. Weycroft near Axminster was a particular focus for defence, situated at both the river crossing for the A358 and the railway line.

As it was, the German military never made landfall on British soil and the stop line went unused. On conclusion of the conflict, farmers were offered £5 to demolish any pillboxes situated on their land, but given the deliberately bomb-resistant nature of these structures, many were left intact. In the years since, many have been vandalised, while others have almost completely disappeared beneath a cloak of vegetation. In 1995, efforts began to catalogue these relics of our wartime heritage, as the Defence of Britain Project proceeded to document some 20,000 surviving sites.

Today, Jurassic Coast visitors can retrace the route of the defence on ‘The Stop Line Way’, a multi-use path comprising part of the National Cycle Network’s Route 33. Whether you follow the route on foot or by bike, as you pass the quiet fields and slow-flowing waters of the Axe, be sure to keep an eye out for the humble remnants of Britain’s fight for liberty.
