WARDEN'S REPORT

It is a year since I presented my first report as Warden of St. Andrew's School.

I am pleased to record that despite changes, it has been a year of steady progress and consolidation. In my attempts to promote cooperative effort and shared responsibility for our work in school I have received the goodwill and active support of the Board of Governors, Old Boys' Association, Parent Teacher Association, staff and students.

I would like to place on record at the outset, my sincere thanks and deep appreciation.

G.C.E. '0' Level Examination 1974

G.C.E. 'A' Level Examination

Mrs. Elizabeth Choy retired on 15.11.74 after 39 years of dedicated service in the School. A special assembly for the Junior School was held to honour Mrs. Choy for her past services.

Miss K. Vallupuram joined the Staff on 2.1.75. We look forward to her .contribution to the life of the School.

Mr. Phua Eng Hee was promoted to Senior Education Office/Group Ill in February 1975.

9 teachers are currently attending the "Evaluation Course for Primary School Teachers."

The% pass in 1974 was 78.3 compared with 78 in 1973.

In 1975 there were no District Athletic Meet and District Swimming Meet. The School did not do so well as last year. In swimming we had a very sLiccessful year. Arthur Gan won a Silver and a Bronze in the Asian Age-Group Meet held in Seoul in August this year. At the same Meet, Lionel Tay won a Bronze. In the National Primary Schools Swimming Meet the School won 2nd place in the "B" Division Boys and 3rd place in the "Overall Boys".

Soccer. - District Tournament - Runners up National Tournament- 5th

Table-Tennis- District Competition - 3rd Chess - National - 3rd

The % pass was 65.6 compared with 64.88 for 1973.

The% pass was 66.1 compared with 61.90/o for 1973.

I would like to make two observations at this stage - we have with us some students at Secondary Three and Four who are experiencing difficulty coping with the demands of an essentially academic course. Parents of students in Sec II and Ill should consider the prospect of their children applying for admission to Vocational Institutes for a variety of courses - if they show an interest and aptitude. They should not be considered "dropouts" but far-sighted students who take advantage of training opportunities and employment prospects being offered to future skilled workers.

Secondly the difficulty of finding suitable staff for key subject-areas like Mathematics and Physical Science may make it difficult to achieve good results in examinations. I shall refer to this subject later.

Election Of Perfects The election of the school prefects was held

on 7th January, 1975 bringing the total prefectorial force to 38.

Prefects' Commendation

The perfects' commendation service was held on 31st January at Saint Andrew's Cathedral. This service was blessed and graced by Rev. Canon Frank Lomax. Mr. Vivian Quek also gave an official address at the service.

Commendation certificates were awarded to senior prefects Tay Yen Tat and Lee Mui Huat, prefects Lily Wee, Charmaine Chan, Tan Kim Hock, and Freddy Yeo.

After the service, the prefects attended the traditional lunch hosted by our distinguished Board of Governors, at Goodwood Park Hotel. We are sincerely grateful for their concern for us.

Farewell To Mr. Quek The annual Prefects' gathering was held on

19th April. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mdm. S. E. Lee for the use of her Meyer Road Bungalow. A buffet dinner was held in honour of Mr. Vivian Quek's resignation as Senior Assistant of the school. We would like to express our appreciation for his support for the prefects. At this juncture, we would

like to extend a warm welcome to Mr. Ong Soo Kiong who is now the Senior Assistant.

The Disciplinary and Appeals Board This Board considers appeals by students.

During the course of the year, many cases of appeal were brought up to the Board; a number which were accepted and on all occassions, matters were clarified. Students are reminded that they should not feel reluctant to appeal to the Board.

General Panel meetings are usually held at the

beginning and end of each semester while Board meetings are held fortnightly.

Our congratulations go to: Verghis Thomas, who was awarded a Colom

The Aeromodelling Club welcomes the new committee. The four committee members are also members of the Junior Flying Club. This is of great value because it gives the four the opportunity of learning under experts. With the knowledge acquired, they are then able to impart it to the 20 new and enthusiastic members who joined us at the beginning of the year.

49

Because some of our members also join other extra curricular activities which meet on Saturday morning, we have to continue our former practice (which many members did not like) of holding our meetings in the afternoon from one to three o'clock. We are considering whether we should extend our meetings by one hour so that more can be accomplished.

The club, now in its second year of existence, has at present, a membership of about seventy. The response came mainly from the Sec. Three, Sec. Four and Pre-University One students. There were also, surprisingly, quite a number of female enthusiasts this year.

The club which owed its inception to Robert Teh and Quek Kheng Seng, has as its main aim to provide basic training in musketry and at the same time to encourage those with marksmanship potential to take up the sport. In the general meeting held at the beginning of the year, the above students were elected to hold office.

Shooting practices are held weekly for our members with Mrs. Huang taking charge of the girls and the boys having Mr. Liu to advise

them. We wish to take this opportunity to welcome both teachers as our new advisers.

Though we are at present using the B.S.A. Air Sporter and the B.S.A. Meteor rifles which are also used by the NCC and the NPCC, we are expecting rifles of our own.

The members of the club at this juncture wish to thank Mr. Ng Chong Kiat (our former adviser), Mr. Pillai (NCC), Mr. Liu and Mrs. Huang for their time and invaluable advice during our practices. We wish also to convey our gratitude to Mr. Jansen for his interest and support in our activities.

With the evident impetus and support from our members, we should see improvem·ent ahead of us.

The 1975 committee had great plans to make the Arts Society something more outstanding than its big membership. We aimed high for interesting mass programmes but, owing to lack of funds, our more ambitious plans were not possible. The annual Catherine Lim Oratorical Contest, which we hosted, saw St. Andrew's emerging second to CHIJ.

Other programmes organised by the different sections of the Arts Society were the lnterschool Music Quiz, Interclass History and Economic Quizzes and an excursion to the Wax Museum for the lower secondary members.

We also sent a team to the RTS Inter-school Debate but were unfortunately eliminated.

The Music Section worked together with the previous committee to stage a Pop Concert, whose pop choir was a tremendous hit. We also invited the American School Brass Band for an evening performance of enjoyable band music.

Mrs. P. Krempl, or Mrs. "Kremps" to us, has been the force and vitality behind the committee and we take this opportunity to thank her for always being there to guide us with patience and understanding.

The hectic preparations that accompany every Drama Festival were intensified this year as we planned to hold it at the Cultural Centre on the I st and 2nd of April. We countered numerous problems which only heightened the sense of excitement and challenge.

The plays staged were on the whole excellent. "Revenge" and "The Vow" outshone the rest to secure the Junior and Senior prizes respectively. The exhibition play staged by the P.U. 2's - CABARET turned out to be a great success. Under the guidance of Lim Siauw Chong, CABARET took on all the drama and colour it

It seemed that all the hard work and enthusiasm shown by all those involved paid off as we felt that the acting, costumes and sets were better than ever before. Our thanks to Mr. Jansen and the teachers for their encouragement, Mrs. Jansen for presenting the prizes and to Mrs. "Kremps" and Miss Guha who deserve a few dozen curtain calls for their presence and infinite patience. We also want to thank everyone who pitched in with the frantic work and the great fun that comes with working together for a common cause.

A committee meeting was held on the 13th of January to decide on the plans and objectives to be carried out by the club.

During the '74-'75 year, we were able to get an accountant and a lawyer to come to school to speak on their respective professions. This gave the students an idea on the type of qualifications a student should have and also the work one has to put up with.

As in the past, forms concerning the careers dub were printed and distributed. We were able to see the popularity of certain professions and for those who were unsure of their future, Mr. Thomas was always at hand to give his advice and time.

Booklets on careers were handed out to the interested students, and these too gave the students some idea of the occupations they were interested in.

The most important feature of the Club, is its counselling service. Here, Mr. Thomas was and is always ready to give his time in guiding students not only in careers, but also in aiding them in any problems.

We are deeply grateful to Mr. Thomas for his devotion and patience in helping us along the way especially when times were hard.

At the beginning of the year, more members were recruited and our society now consists of over 50 members. Owing to the good response from the lower secondary, 1975 became one of the most progressive years for the society.

Our course includes basic steps, punches, kicks, sparring, internal strength and the use of sticks.

The aim of the society has been to improve the physical as well as the mental alertness of

Several members of our society participated in a performance organised by the Pak Hock Pugilistic Association during the Chinese New Year Festive season, in aid of a charity fund.

For the future, we hope that our society would attract more members, both boys and girls, who are keenly interested in this sport.

The year started off rather quietly for the society. Meetings were held once every term to discuss and arrange activities for the term.

In April, the society published its inaugural magazine, which unfortunately received poor response from the roembers. Hence, the idea for the second issue was abandoned.

In July, an essay competition was held for the Upper Secondary. Only a handful participated.

On April 12th, four boys represented the school for the Essay Competition organized by

In August, a Chinese Language Survey Team interviewed four boys from our school. The aim of the survey was to find out whether dialects spoken at home would affect the pronunciation of Mandarin.

The society is grateful for the guidance, support and encouragement Mr. Ng Choon Seng has given us.

The St. Andrew's School Christian Group meets regularly on Fridays at 1.30 p.m. The fundamental aim of these meetings is to hear God's word and also to allow fellow Christian brothers and sisters to have fellowship with one another. To realise this aim, speakers are

59

frequently invited to speak on various topics relating to our Christian faith. We realise that the Christian Group has to be supported by prayer and therefore besides our weekly meetings, prayer meetings are also held on every alternate day at recess time in the chapel.

The Christian Group publishes its own bi-monthly newsletter, "Theopneustos", a Greek word which means "God Inspired". Through this newsletter, Christians help and encourage one another through sharings and testimonies.

One of the highlights of the Christian Group was the Annual March Camp held during the March vacation. Praise God that through this camp, many committed their lives to Christ and found out for themselves that God is real. The new committee looks to the future with hope and our meetings will comprise of interesting

activities such as film-shows, Bible study sessions and discussion groups, which we hope will help in the spiritual growth of our members.

In conclusion, we take this opportunity to convey our sincere thanks to our advisers, Mr. Blackburn, Mr. Ross Allen and Miss Ng for their contribution to this group, not forgetting also all those who are faithfully praying for us.

Two delegates - Koh Kian Chew and John Pathy - were sent to attend the District Interact Conference in Petaling Jaya. The theme for the conference was "Service with Joy".

The Interact Games helped to foster ties amongst all interact clubs in Singapore. We hosted the netball tournament and fared very well in most of the other games.

Two major projects undertaken in the school were the Christmas card sale (for the school fund) and the collection of clothes for

the refugees at Bangladesh. More than $100 was raised for the school fund and a few carloads of clothes were collected.

Contact with foreign lnteractors was maintained through correspondence and bulletins.

This has once again been a successful year for the Gardening Society. In spite of the poorer response for new membership as compared to the previous year, we managed well as an efficient group.

In May, a school gardening competition was held. It was aimed at promoting interest in gardening among members, as well as other students. The Society also organised a picnic to Tanah Merah in March.

Weekly meetings were held at which we accomplished several projects. With the addition of new tools, these projects were carried out swiftly. New plants were bought and planted along the quadrangle, Robert's Court, the Prefect's Court and along the drives. We spent part of our holidays finishing the projects.

We wish to extend our appreciation and thanks to Mr. Herbert Wee who has given us invaluable advice and assistance, and also to our devoted advisers, Mrs. Loke and Miss Tong for their aid and guidance.

The Malay Society was established six years ago, and its aim is the promotion of the National Language. This year saw a steady increase in the number of members. Most of the members are from Secondary One to Four, with a few from the Pre-University classes. We have 2· education representatives who, besides providing the members with information are also responsible for the collection of membership fees.

A number of quizzes and debates were organized by the society during the first half of the year and the response was good. Meanwhile,

the committee plans to organize an Essay competition for the Lower Secondary boys and also to host an Inter-School Oratorical Contest. We are proud to announce that our Debating Team from the Secondary Fours qualified for the Inter-School Debate organized by the R.T.S. This year the whole structure of the committee has changed. We hope that by this innovation, better team spirit and qualities of leadership would be developed.

Early this year, a talk on 'The working of the Television' was held in our school lecture theatre. The response was surprisingly good. The tour to the Van Houten Chocolate factory, proved to be educational and very interesting . Our school was placed third in the inter-school quiz organized by NJC. The annual Vivian Quek Trophy Quiz was hosted by the Society in August.

The first issue of the science periodical was

We are glad to have with us Mr. David Chan as Captain, Mr. Johnny Kiong and Mr. Michael Er as instructors for gymnastics and band respectively. They are old boys of the school who are rendering their services to the 7th Coy.

The year 1974, had been a very active year for the 7th Coy. There were activities like camping, social functions, barbeques, a Christmas party and carolling organised by the able officers of the Coy. The Boys' Brigade had the honour of forming the "Guard of Honour" at the 1974 Speech Day. In December, the I st Coy Girls' Brigade invited 10 of our boys to attend a barbeque at ACS.

We began 1975 with an intake of 21 cadet recruits and 25 junior recruits which brings the total membership to 90. Although with a small membership, we were able to collect a sum of $2,200 for the BB Week this year.

The Annual Enrolment Service was held on 27th April, 1975. The Junior Section, with a membership of about 30, is under the supervision of Evelyn Cheok and Terence Choo.

78

After 3 years' absence from the Annual Brigade Drill Competition, we participated in this year's competition. Unfortunately, we did not fare wel I.

A holiday trip to Sentosa Island in June was organised by the Junior Section instructors for the company. The boys had a wonderful time on the island.

A group of NCOs and 2Lt. Christopher Raj, were chosen to represent the Boys' Brigade in this year's Youth Festival Parade. Another three boys were selected by the Church of Ascension to be trained as Christian leaders in the "Diocese of Singapore Leadership Camp", held in June in Penang.

In conclusion, we, the members of the 7th Singapore Coy Boys' Brigade would like to express our gratitude to Rev. Ross Allen, who will be leaving us at the end of the year. We would also like to thank Mr. David Chan, Mr. Michael Er and Mr. William Wong who have sacrificed their ti me to render their services to the Company.

The School Brass entered its eighth year since its formation. At the beginning of this year, the response for recruitment was good. The students were carefully selected, and after a probationary period of two months, recruits were selected to be trained.

The band performed for the following occasions:

Practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30 to 11.00 a.m. for the recruits and on Tuesdays at 1.45 to 3.45 p.m. for the band members. There are combined practices for both, the recruits and the main band on Saturdays at 8.30 a.m.

To meet the expansion of the band, four new instruments were purchased. To date, there are 36 musical instruments with 55 members on the roll. A new set of uniforms were also issued to the members.

2501 ST. ANDREW'S 'STAR' SCOUT GROUP

Group Scout Leader: Ong Chong Hai Rover Scout Leader: Paul Wee

Assistant Rover Scout Leaders: Eugene Seow Goh Chee Kong

Venture Scout Leader: Toh Weng Choy Assistant Venture Scout Leader: Chua Swee Lee

Assistant Scout Leaders: Choo Haw Fatt Colin Lian

After nine years in Scouting, eight as Scoutmaster and one as District Commissioner, Mr. Victor Wee bids farewell to active Scouting -a big loss to the Scouting world in Singapore. I cannot think of anybody who has done more for 2501 than Mr. Wee. A very special 'Thank You' to him. Mr. Raymond Ong left in September last year to do his Master's Degree in U.K. and Mr. Koo Lian Kiat to join Hwa Chong Junior College. Many thanks to Mr. 0~ and Mr. Koo and we wish all of them the very best in their undertakings.

To-day, we have a total strength of about one hundred and eighty members with Cadets, Scouts, Ventures, and Rover Scouts. We are lacking in Adult Leaders from members of the

85

Ho Yim San Alan Tsang S. Aruchelvam

Staff itself. With still many more boys from Sec. Is and lls wanting to join Scouting, we are unable to take in more than forty new members this year.

A training camp was held early in February for our Recruits. A Get-together in April was organised by the Scout Patrol Leaders. This year's Job Week collections topped last year's per capita with a total earning of nearly $2300/-. Five thousand Donation Draw tickets have been distributed. With a bit of effort we hope to sell more than last year's figure of $4400/-. With today's unemployment and trade recession our earnings from these two sources of income may not be bad at all.

Page 68: Seated Clifford Tan, Fong Wai Yin.standrewssec.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u181/1975 magazine.pdfV. Yogeswary, Tay Swee Hong, ... Fan Kam Tong, Yeo Siew Chye, Chye Yen Puay, Soh Kee Guan,

The highest distinction a Scout can gain is the Chief Commissioner's Award. The following Scouts have attained that standard:

Tan Keng Kok Jeffrey Tsang Ng Hark Leong Wee Chye Kin

Erwin Quahe Chan Wai Kheong

Rover Scouting is once again revived at St. Andrew's. We are one of the few Troops in Singapore with a Rover Crew and this was formed last December under the charge of Mr. Paul Wee. They held a camp at Sarimbun last December and meetings are held monthly. The crew is planning a Tea-Party in June to encourage more Recruits from former Scouts of the School. Working for B.P.'s Award is their main aspiration.

The Ventures are working for the Venture Award and the President Scout's Award. We hope to produce at least a few this year. Ten

Venture Scouts held an over-night Island-wide Cycling Expedition over Vesak Day weekend. Several Patrol Camps were held at Pulau Ubin for the Scout's Exploration Badge. The Troop plans to hold its Annual Camp at Sarimbun for four days and three nights at the end of this year.

There have been a few dropouts from the Scouts and Venture sections. They left because they felt that the Troop has suffered a setback in manpower. To some of last year's President Scouts who have come forward to help us run the Troop, I am sure they find, "There is Joy in giving and not just in Taking.'' The Troop wishes to acknowledge the help of:-

We welcome Mr. Ang as our new athletics master, replacing Mr. Raymond Ong who has left us for a scholarship study in England, and Mr. Koo Lian Kiat who has left the school. To these two teachers, we owe our gratitude for their patience, guidance and support to athletics in St. Andrew's.

The first event on the sports calendar was the annual Cross-Country Meet. Unlike previous years where the meet took place at Potong Pasir, 1975 saw the change of venue to that of the MacRitchie course. K. Cheriyan and Henry Yip captured top honours in the P.S. and S. divisions respectively; whilst Chan Lai Kah was top in the Girls' P.S.

There was to be no change of venue for the school's 59th Annual Athletic Meet. As in previous years, the meet was held on our school field on the 3rd May, 1975. Shortly after the meet was underway, it rained heavily and the meet was postponed to the following Wednesday morning. The outstanding performers for this year's sports were Edward Leong (S.), Chow Yee Heng (P.S.) and Jessie Choo (Girls' P.S.).

89

Edward broke the 100 m. and the 400 m. records with fast times of 11.4 secs. and 57.1 secs. respectively. He capped his fine performance by winning the 200 m. and Shot Putt convincingly. The P.S. was dominated by Chow Yee Heng who ran a record time of 17.2 secs. in the 110 m. Hurdles. He also clinched three golds in the I 00 m., 400 m. Hurdles anl:t the Long Jump. Jessie ran an easy 800 m. in a time of 3 min. 9.6 secs. to erase her own record set last year. She went on to win the Javelin; and was placed 2nd and 3rd in the Discus and the 1,500 m. respectively. All in all, 11 records were rewritten in this year's track and field meet.

The school's re~ay team was honoured by an invitation from the Flash Sports Club to compete in their annual track and field meet at Siglap Sec. School this year. This invitation was one of six addressed to the fastest relay teams among Singapore schools. A faulty change of baton from the 2nd to the 3rd runner resulted in the team being placed third.

In conclusion, the athletes would like to thank Mr. Ang, for his encouragement, our principal and the school for their support.

Four teams entered the competition which was at National Level. The three boys' teams faced tough opposition and failed to qualify for the finals. The girls were more successful, emerging National runners-up in their division. We were unfortunate not to have won the tournament as we had beaten the winning team; losing on a countback.

The reason for this loss is due largely to the small pool of players. This has been the state of affairs for the past few years. In order to obtain a large base of players, the school openchampionships was held during the June holidays. Response from the boys was very encouraging, with 72 entries for the singles and 41 pairs for the doubles. There should be more response from the girls. Through this tourna-

ment, we were able to spot potentials.

This year, the teams underwent physical training under Mr. Wee in preparation for the National championships. We may not have gone far in terms of results, but we have taken the correct approach towards the game. By establishing a large base and implementing a comprehensive training programme, we should produce formidable teams in the future.

For all this we are grateful to our badminton master and mistress. They have put in a lot of effort and their enthusiasm had been inspiring throughout the tournament. It is up to the players to show their appreciation of this interest.

We held regular training for our secondary team mainly because most of our players were in this division. The team beat the Willow Avenue and St. Thomas teams but lost to the Maris Stella and Upper Serangoon Technical teams in the District Tournament. We also played friendly matches against the youth teams of the Jalan Tenteram and Potong Pasir community centres.

There was less activity in the other divisions. Nevertheless, we had inter-form matches for both the boys and the girls in the post-secondary

We plan to hold inter-class tournaments for the secondary and lower secondary classes during the third term so as to encourage more students to take up basketball.

The response to join the Boxing Club this year was good, with an enrolment of 70 members. More time and effort should be spent and exerted in instilling interest in this sport among our students.

Training sessions were held twice a week which included calisthenics, shadow boxing, skipping, bag punching, weight training and general sparring. Members had to undergo months of tough physical training for the annual

On behalf of the members, I would like to thank our advisers, Mr. Toh and Mr. Singham for their assistance.

The National Schools Tournament started in late April. Our school took part in all the 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'Girls' division tournaments. Owing to the late intake of the Pre-U I students, there was insufficient time for any serious training.

The secondary boys' team played well but were unlucky to be unplaced. The postsecondary boys' team consisting wholly of Pre-U I students fared quite well, considering

97

that they only had had few training sessions. Most of the players will still be with the team next year and are sure to do better. The girls' team did well. However, despite all handicaps, the players gave their best to the game.

We were not so successful in this tournament, having won one match, drawn one and lost two. Our team had to abandon the remaining 3 games owing to the fact that five of our players had used up their Technical Class Leave, and could not play for the School to complete the league matches.

This year's soccer season started off with great fervour and enthusiasm. Regular practices were held under the supervision of Mr. Tong and Mr. Asokan. After much training, two teams were selected to represent the school in the Post Secondary and Secondary divisions.

The tournaments for both divisions started off in early March. Both teams started off well but faded out in the later stages of the tournaments. The post Secondary T earn was able to register one of the highest scores in the tournament by beating Baharuddin Vocational Institute by 11 goals to 2. Two of our players, Neo Kay Sin and Ting Tuan Toon, were selected to

100

represent Combined Schools, in a friendly match against the visiting Japanese High School at the National Stadium.

Although the St. Andrew's soccer teams did not win any major honours this year, there are still some players with top class calibre.

In conclusion, we hope that the boys will continue to train for next year's tournament and on behalf of the team, I would like to thank Mr. Tong and Mr. Asokan for their dedicated effort in promoting soccer in the school.

Swimming was off to an early start this year. Under the guidance of our teachers-in-charge, Mr. Foo Yoong Seong, Mrs. Jane Khoo and Miss Lau Ee Nah, we held our training sessions at the Toa Payoh pool.

Much enthusiasm was shown by students at our 38th Annual Swimming Carnival. A total of ten new records were established. The boys of the lower secondary and secondary divisions in particular performed well. The 'star' for the day was Danny Ee who broke 3 records. The response from our girls this year exceeded expectations and deserve praise for their sporting spirit.

In the second year of the Tennis Club's existence, we managed to field a team for the Nationals. Only a make-shift team could be formed, and with the clashing of the Sports heats, we missed a few vital matches. We were also plagued by injuries. This year, we could

only manage a few victories and were not able to reach the final round.

We would like to thank Dr. Goodman for his time and patience during the tournament.

Mr. B. H. Kiong.

The Saints' have once again maintained their positions as rugger kingpins, brushing aside the challenge of traditional rivals Raffles. The 2nd XV won their first encounter, the 1st leg of the Kiwi Cup, by 14-6. They were unfortunate to get only the silver at the National Championships, but made amends at the 2nd leg. Playing intelligent rugger and displaying good teamwork, our boys were superior for the Rafflesians and steamrolled to a 24-0 victory.

The I st XV emerged as the top school boy team in Singapore when the "Fighting Saints" retained the National Title for the 3rd consecutive year and recaptured the Kiwi Cup. In doing so, the team established a perfect record of not conceding a single try throughout the season. Out of four encounters with our traditional rivals, we drew one (0-0) and won three.

St. Andrew's established another record when skipper Gerald Lim became the only schoolboy this year to represent the State.

Our Lower-Secondary Team was perhaps the most unlucky in that they were unable to win the National Finals 'C' Division (Goh Keng Swee Trophy).

The most fun-packed game was perhaps the Past versus Present match, for the Ong Peck Lye Trophy, which saw speed and stamina

107

pit~hed against experience. The old boy's team, which would have been the National Team if all players were in their prime, played with much enthusiasm and eventually edged the present boys 26-25. The win was not unexpected as our sporting old boys made at least I 5 replacements.

A combined Saints XV also played a friendly match against the visiting King's School from Australia as part of our National Day celebrations.

Many thanks to Encik Omar for his help, teachers and students in charge of the receptions, and also old boys, Mr. Ong Peck Lye, Mr. Lim Teck Seng, Mr. Ng Yew Wing and Mr. John Kaan for their generosity. We also thank all who have given us their unfailing support, moral or otherwise.

We are indebted to our coaches Victor Lam, S. Woothrapathy, Leow Kim Swun and Lee Joo Kang, our rugger masters Mr. Kiong Beng Huat and Mr. W. Pillay, our Sports Secretary Mr. Michael Seet and Mr. Jansen for sacrificing so much for us. From them we have learnt much more than just "rugger" and to them we give our thanks and respect.

The rugger players ask no more than the. full support of old boys, teachers, parents and students. For this combined effort we are truly grateful.

Those who took part in the annual crosscountry race started off well by capturing four of the top ten positions. The four are Agilay Davy, Yeo Chai Siang, Yap Siew Lan, and Tang Swee Tuan who finished 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 9th respectively.

In this year's annual Athletic Meet, we finished overall runners-up. However, for the inter-house Tables-Tennis championships we

emerged champions. The participants were Lai Heng, Kiak Hwa, Melanie Chia, and Emmeline Chan.

We would like to thank Miss Guha for ·her inspiring encouragement and strong support, sincerely appreciated by all girls of Adams House.

Chelliah did not excel in the annual crosscountry race nor did she fare too well in the sports and swimming meets. This was due to the lack of participants and to the late in-take of the pre-university one students. Nevertheless, our small contingent of girls put up a good fight. Although we were placed last in the overall placings, the girls took their defeat courageously and showed true sportsmanship. Keep your chins up Chelliah and let us hope that you will fare better next year and in all the years to come. Credit as well as encouragement should be given to our young promising

CADET SCOUTS

The St. Andrew's Cadet Scout Unit with an enrolment of 81 is the largest and strongest in the Toa Payoh District. Meetings are held every Saturday from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon. During this period, boys are prepared for their Bronze, Silver and Gold Standards and Proficiency awards. There are at present IO Cadet Scouts preparing for the Gold Standard.

Job Week held from the 16th. to the 20th. March was a rewarding experience for some of our younger members. Through our boys' efforts, we topped the list in the District Cadet Scout Section, having collected a sum of $554/-. Prizes were awarded to Cadet Scouts who earned the highest amount.

10 Cadet Scouts participated in a hike to Bukit Timah on the 29th. March. It was the boys' first experience in hill climbing, and though we encountered bad weather, we completed the 6 mile hike and climb.

The District's campfire held on the 19th. April was a disappointment to some boys.

The Toa Payoh District organised a Cadet Scout Camp at the Sarimbun Scout Camp on the 5th. to the 7th. September. This was attended by 40 of our Cadet Scouts.

We take this opportunity to thank all parents and friends who have helped us in our fund raising campaigns held annually.

MRS. ELIZABETH CHOY 0.8.E., P.B.S.

Mrs. Choy joined the Staff of St. Andrew's School in 1935. During World War II she was interned by the Japanese. After the end of World War II she rejoined the School in September 1945. In 1950 she was seconded as Senior Assistant to Playfair School-the I st Regional School built under the Five Year Education Plan. In 1956 she left St. Andrew's to be Principal, School for the Blind. In 1961, she rejoined St. Andrew's School as Senior Assistant, Junior II.

Mrs. Choy was very active in social work. She was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1951. She served on the Legislative Council for 5 years. In 1954 she went on a lecture tour in the United States and Canada at the request of the British Foreign Office. She represented Singapore at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in May 1952 in London.

I had the good fortune and privilege to know and work with Mrs. Choy for the last 12 years. Not only has her teaching been skilled but she showed a love and understanding for children that gave them so much more than material knowledge. Her warm sympathy enabled her from the outset to build in children the Christian values that will help them in their adult lives. It was always refreshing and stimulating to watch Mrs. Choy at work with her "family", which her class inevitably became.

St. Andrew's will very much miss Mrs. Choy because of her influence on her fellow teachers and pupils.

A MARKET GARDEN IN POTONG PASIR

The farm chosen for study lies to the northwest of the Kallang basin. It is located on lowlying land composed of silty clay.

The farmer is an elderly Chinese who has been working on the farm for over forty years. He and his family lives on the farm in a wooden building with a thatched roof.

The size of the farm is only 1.2 acres but on it the farmer has successfully cultivated a variety of vegetables, especially 'chye sim', lettuce, 'kang kong', 'kai Ian', 'tua chye' and 'khong chye'. These are grown on raised beds ranging in length from 11 to 30 feet and 3 to 4 feet wide. In addition, the farmer grows papayas, rambutans and sugar cane as a supplementary source of income.

Work on the farm begins at dawn. After each crop has been harvested, the beds are worked over. The earth is loosened and worked to a fine tilt with a 'changkol' and arranged in beds.

Young seedlings are carefully transplanted from the nursery. This is done entirely by hand as great care is involved. The seedlings are planted in rows at intervals of 4 to 5 inches. Following transplanting, manure comprising prawn dust, or chicken droppings is applied.

To promote growth and ensure survival, the young plants are watered everyday. On hot days, watering is done three times daily; in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening. Water for this purpose is obtained from ponds.

Preparation of beds.

Watering of plants.

During the initial stages of growth, a cover of coconuts fronds and straw is used to protect the young plants from the direct rays of the sun and to reduce the impact of raindrops which may otherwise cause considerable damage. Other operations include weeding and the loosening of the soil around the plants to ensure good aeration.

The leafy vegetables mature in about three weeks and are ready to be harvested . The plants are carefully pulled out of the ground, washed in the ponds and sorted. They are then transported by bicycles to the market at Toa Payoh where they are sold to retailers, or to the Whampoa market where they are sold by members of the family.

The production of vegetables for sale is the dominant purpose of the farm. However, some livestock is also raised to supplement the farm's income. Ducks and poultry are the most important as they demand less care than pigs and they command good prices during the festive seasons in the year. Together with

Weeding.

The encroaching flats.

the sale of vegetables, the farmer earns an average income of $800 a month.

In a few months the farm might no longer be in operation. It is located on land zoned for housing development and the farmer has already been given notice to quit. To the farmer this means a loss of his livelihood and a new way of life.

POLLUTION

The word "pollution" refers to the contamination of our environment, as a result of industrial and economic growth. It impairs our health to such an extent that control measures must be immediately taken.

Air pollution is a man-made problem. As a result of urbanisation, industrial growth and rising standards of living, more and more undesirable gases are being discharged into the atmosphere. These pollutants in the air corrode metals, disfigure stone masonry and are harmful to our health. It is costing the world millions of dollars in repairs and replacement.

Most industrial activity generates air pollution in one form or another. Power stations, chemical plants and other factories burning fuels, emit great quantities of smoke and gases. To a large extent, air pollution is associated with a demand for fuels.

The motor vehicle is one of the main causes of air pollution and can be so harmful that plants which are grown along some of the main roads wither and die. Domestic heating processes also create smoke and soot, polluting the air. Burning of grass and leaves give rise to smoke which can become a public nuisance.

Apart from chemical and physical effects on inanimate objects, air pollution affects animal and plant life - including man. A number of the air pollutants have been shown to be closely associated with lung cancer. Air pollution has also been shown to cause or aggravate chronic bronchitis and a number of other diseases.

Control of air pollution is a very complex matter. Some pollution is unavoidable as society becomes industrialized but this does not mean that we should not take any steps to minimize it. Concerted effort from all sectors of society is necessary. The public must be informed of the extent and seriousness of air pollution. Public co-operation in minimizing air pollution from diesel motor-car engines, burning of garden and other refuse would go a long way in allevating the problem which is accentuated by the compactness qf our island of 226 square miles.

Solid wastes pollution include domestic refuse and other discarded solid materials which are produced by commercial, industrial and agricultural activities. With improved standards of living, growth of packaging of consumer goods and vast increases in the use of paper products and synthetics, the solid wastes produced by each person are increasingly daily.

156

Water pollution is caused by the throwing of refuse and waste matter into streams and rivers. While some of these rubbish and waste matter are slowly carried away and discharged into the sea, most of them quickly settle down to the river bottom or accumulate on the banks of the streams and rivers.

The liquid waste matter, like the kitchen and bath wastes from domestic houses, oil waste from service stations and motor workshops, and the waste from the washing or processing procedures of factories after mixing with the water in the streams and rivers cannot be removed. Being mainly organic matter, this liquid waste begins to rot. Such decomposition of the organic matter exhausts all the dissolved oxygen in the river water. As a result, the fish die off. The river thus slowly becomes polluted.

Besides being a nuisance, the water in the river cannot be used for any recreational activities. As a small island community, it is essential that any water supply must be conserved and exploited. The water from the streams and rivers should not be allowed to be polluted, but must be kept in as clean a state as possible so that this water can be pumped to reservoirs for storage and treatment, to augment our present water supply resources and to meet the rising need for water; both for domestic and industrial purposes.

Preventive measures against water pollution are relatively simple. Solid wastes should not be thrown into drains and faecal wastes should be properly disposed. In the case of liquid wastes; these should be discharged into sewers.

Noise pollution is also now a serious problem in Singapore. With rapid urbanisation, the increase of motor vehicles, and construction works, the level of noise has risen in Singapore.

Members of the public can help by minimising radio and television noise. Factory construction operators could try to limit their hours of work, particularly during the night when most people want some peace and quiet for their sleep. If each member of the public does his bit, there will be a reduction in the noise level.

We should strive towards a situation which will give one and all a more healthy environment. The government should be congratulated for its foresight in tackling the pollution before it gets out of hand. The establishment of the Environment Ministry indicates the Government's seriousness in this matter.

TO A TEACHER WITH LOVE,

Sometimes, as we bustle along like mad swarming ants on a sizzling pavement, living thru our hurried paces, caught helpless in dry routine, in that twilight of not-man-not-child years, we forget to thank those who lend a hand.

Stoic and steady, and yet when everything seems washed out (like the taste of a stale Coke), And stern accusing fingers threaten all around, that sudden smile (and unspoken words of care) come like silent prods, urging on -(dust yourself and get your bottom off the floor)

We have you to look up to -Never minding the sarcasm, neither's the cynicism any sweat (sometimes) -After all, nobody's rated five star (Instant room service and wall-to-wall carpet?) Still, You're just (almost) like what we aim to be -adult and human and slightly tending to a loveable madness.

Keep it up, "teach"! you have not lived unappreciated !

Robert Teh 2 Sc I ANTS

One twilight alone, my mind inert Beholding as solitary ant in the dirt Crawling out of its earthly abode To return again with some heavy load.

Meandering between leaves, dehydrated I watched it, fascinated Its search for food never ending On its own diligence depending.

Till blocking its path, a grasshopper dead A cruel boy's fatal hands on which once laid Delighted with this accidental find The ant hastened back, fleet-footed as a hind.

Columns of ants advanced to the scene Where the first minute ant had been Its puny strength each ant offers To drag the spoil back to the food coffers.

Tiny physical powers united can achieve Compared to their size, wonders hard to believe If they so small can do thus Why not us?

Bliss was it that dawn to be alive

But to be young was very heaven indeed.

The school, besides developing a child spiritually, physically and socially, also develops in him the ability to grasp the methods by which he will acquire precision learning.

For most boys, relating to others comes quite naturally. In fact, a child of seven or eight is already quite a sociable individual. He is able to leave familiar people at home and go off to school without undue anxiety giving way to panic. But this does not hold true for all. It is not uncommon to find doting grandmothers, mothers and servants in school.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and here full use is made of the time before school learning begins.

A secondary student is no different from a primary boy in that both are expected to be active, outgoing, strong, assertive and masculine. We expect them to be able to jump, run and play-to take part in games.

As a student enters a higher level of e~umtion, he finds that learning is by no means a passive process of unquestioning absorption of facts. It requires a constructive type of sustained attack upon the problems presented, and it comes fastest when the student is gathering it in to satisfy his own curiosity.

If we are to develop these qualities in them, then group activities after school hours will encourage them further to be individuals and yet trusting and sporting. We have here some boys gardening for the school. (actually they are mtching worms for a weekend fishing trip!)

The school sees to the needs of its students - learning is stimulating, play is invigorating and spiritual guidance, enriching.

Even during adolescence, when their understanding of parents' and adults' way of thinking probably hits an all time low, Christian fellowship or the Church can serve as a good outlet whereby students can find peace and guidance.

What do we offer at St. Andrew's? an environment for enriched individual and social development. Through our activities we hope to motivate the students towards independent learning and develop leadership, enterprise and a sense of responsibility. We provide opportunities to nurture the ideals of Christian living in the context of modern Singapore, by exposure to knowledge and skills, attitudes and values in preparation for a changing world. The challenge is "BE YOUR BEST- DO YOUR BEST!" Given his own vision, sense of purpose, faith in God and himself, his individual response determines how far he goes "UP AND ON!"

Going through this period of adolescence, brings one to realise that the world is not the school alone. The older student learns to see everything in a much broader perspective and learns to speak up for his convictions.

Adolescence is also a time to be different; to over-assert one's individuality. But he must learn to appreciate and accept the fact that certain things in life go by specific and precise rules and regulations. Sensibility and reasoning are means to the understanding of these rules. But some never learn ........ .

He develops these qualities of trust and responsibility and is therefore, able to work with little pressure from the teachers. More lessons are carried out 'on location' which make them more interesting and lively.

As he grows older, studies take up much of his time but some still find the time to participate in games, in the firm belief that a healthy body contains a healthy mind.

But then .. ... . Not all lessons can be conducted outside the classroom. They have to use the same basic technique of chalk and blackboard; pretty effective too!

Also, from an inward - looking boy of 14 or so, he develops a community spirit. Instead of thinking of himself, he offers a helping hand to those less fortunate like tutoring the little ones.

He now faces the uphill task of relating to - GIRLS - (Not too difficult, really I)

Added to his problems of growing up, adjusting to greater responsibilities, showing concern for others less fortunate, girls come into the picture. One thing though, they certainly add a touch of colour.

And when successful:-Loving can cost a lot but not

loving always costs more and Those who fear to love often

find that the want of love Is an emptiness that robs

the joy from love Thus, its better to take a

chance on love, Than to wish, when we've lost

the chance, that we had.
