Mr.Kamal Nayan joined a Office Manager, Industrial Products

Limited, Mumbai after coming back from U.S.A. from where he got his

M.B.A. degree with specialization in personnel management. He was

young and energetic and believed in results. Before proceeding to U.S.A.,

he had several years of experience in India in difiereut capactites. \Vhen

Mr. Nayan joined Industrial Products Limited, its office time \\'as 10.30

A.NL to 5.30 P.M. He felt that the timing should be changed to 10.00 A.M.

to 5.00 P.M. because he knew that office personnel in U.S.A. did not work

after 5.00 P.M. He thought this to be true for India also and to ensure more

availability of effective time for office: he changed it to 10.00 A.M. to 5.00

P.M .. He announced the change officially,

No one reacted initially but after two days, Mr.Nayan received

a written memorandum by al1 office personnel that old office timing

be restored. Mr.Nayan did not yield to this demand. However, he was

convinced that the first step was to build co-operative spirit among his

employees through informational get together. Therefore, he prepared a

scheme of having monthly dinner patty of all members of the office. In the

party, all members were to bring their home-made dishes . Their wives and

overheard the following conversation between two of his office members.

First employee: "So, what are you bringing for the party? As for myself~ I will bring Bhelpuri".

Second employee: "I will bring Chana". (Both laughed)

Mr.Nayan felt that nobody seemed to he concerned in his scheme.

Q # 1 F oodworld, a grocery store, carries a particular brand oftea that has a daily demand of (8) 20 units and a standard deviation of 5 units. Its current supplier sells tea to Foodworld at Rs . 50 per unit but requires two weeks lead time. Foodworld has an alternative supplier who is willing to supply at Rs. 49.50 per unit but requires three weeks of lead time and insists on a minimum order size of 500 units per order. The company has an ordering cost of Rs 200 per order and an inventory carrying cost of 25 percent. The management at F oodworld is of the view that a target level of one stock out in two years is acceptable for grocery items. Which supplier should the company choose?

Q # 2 A company is examining two alternative choices for moving goods from its plant in (8) Thane to its depot in Chennai. It has been traditionally shipping goods in the full truck load (FTL) mode so as to save transportation costs. Its finance department has been complaining about high inventories at Chennai. A full truck load results in a sbipment size of 160 units while less than full truck load (L TL) sbipments allow the firm to get lots of 40 units each. The average demand at the Chennai depot is 80 units per month. The cost of the product is Rs 500 per unit and the finn works with an inventory carrying cost of 20 percent. Shipping through the FTL mode results in a transport cost of Rs 40 per unit while the LTL mode shipment results in a transport cost of Rs 50 per unit. Should the company shift to L TL sbipment? The finn realizes that L TL shipments result in damages of 1 percent of the goods sbipped. How will tbis information affect -the decision? Show calculations.
