Members of the Met League,

This is now the end of the second season impacted by the on-going Covid-19 global pandemic. Unlike

the 2019-2020 season, which was cut short by the pandemic, all scheduled matches for 2020-2021 were

held. The format of the matches, however was modified significantly. The teams met individually to

conduct the matches and check the scoring, and the resulting scores were submitted electronically, where I

combined the results from each team to determine the outcome of the match. Matches were held with

appropriate social-distancing, which meant a minimum of the comforts of socializing and snacking usually

accompanying a night out with the team, but we did get the matches in.

From a stats point of view, participation was good in 2021, despite the pandemic, with a 6% increase in

the number of qualifying shooters. The top 3 team average was also up 6%. There were several teams with

rather large changes in average over the past two years, but this is not unusual.

League meetings were held exclusively online using Zoom video conferencing, which in my opinion

was very effective and efficient, more to my liking than meeting in person, actually.

For this season, the following deviations from our usual procedures applied, and the format and content

of this bulletin reflects them:

The nominated League awards, Newcomer of the Year, Met League Mentoring Award, Met

League Marksmanship Award, Met League Range Officer of the Year Award, and Met League

Leadership Award, were not awarded for the 2020-2021 season.

The annual League Award Banquet was not scheduled, although we are looking into tentatively

scheduling it in the fall, so stay tuned!

The annual League Awards Bulletin is to be published electronically only, no official printed

copies to be made at the end of the season, but if we have a banquet, we will probably print copies

for distribution at the door.

No trophies will be produced. The perpetual plaques and cups will be updated to reflect the final

results of the 2020-2021 season. Again, this depends somewhat on the success or failure of a fall

banquet. If it is held and there is sufficient participation, we may have trophies made up.

Looking forward from where we are now, a large percentage of the state’s population, especially the

older, vulnerable age groups of which many more of us are a part of than would care to admit, have been

vaccinated, and the vaccines are working! The number of cases is reduced, as are the number of severe

illnesses and deaths. The CDC, at the time of this writing, is relaxing masking and social distancing

requirements for fully vaccinated people, despite the growing number of genetic variants of the Covid-19

virus that are absolutely ravaging parts of the world even now. I am hoping that next year’s season will be

considerably more normal than this past season. Having personally lost family to this pandemic, I hope and

recommend and urge that all our shooters who can be go get vaccinated, I want to see you all on the rosters

for many years to come!

On a very sad note, we lost our Chief Range Officer, Roger Sperry, this past January. I did not always

agree with his point of view, but I will miss him. He was one of the very first gun people I encountered as I

was just getting into the sport and shopping at Newington Gun Exchange.

We also lost another irreplaceable member of our community within the past few

weeks. I was saddened to learn that Butch Surwilo, 57 year owner of Mr. Trophy, passed

away on August 26th, 2021. His public obituary stated that “He lived by his motto, "The

customer is always right."”, and that was most certainly my strongest impression of the

way he ran the business. No matter how many times I called to ask him to fix this or that

issue with the Met League trophies, he always said immediately that I should bring it right

in and they would fix it on the spot. At our last banquet I had a whole series of trophies with issues, and he

had the replacement labels made up for me before I even arrived at the shop. Each year, I would show up

in the office and he would peek at me from his desk in the office and his eyes would light up and he would

address me by name. Frequently he would recount stories about all my stat office predecessors and it was

clear he had a personal relationship with all of us. It will be a difficult visit for me the next time I visit the

shop to place our order the next time the opportunity arises.

Once again, on behalf of the officers of the Hartford Met League, I wish you peace and health for the

coming months. Stay safe, and if you can and haven’t, GO GET VACCINATED! I’d really like to see you

in person in the fall!

Members We Will Miss

Philip A. Overbaugh

Philip Overbaugh, a member of the Telephone team, passed away Monday, April 12, 2021 at the age of 83. Paul served in the U.S. Navy and worked many years as a pipefitter and plumber for the Local #21. Phil was a member of MSI and the Rockville Fish & Game Club.

Chief Range Officer Roger Sperry

Roger Sperry, a member of the Telephone team and Chief Range Officer of the Met League at the time of his death, passed away January 5th, 2021 at the age of 67. Roger served in the United States Marine Corp where he achieved the rank of sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, Pistol Expert Badge, Merit Mast, Good Conduct Medal, and the Air Crew Insignia. He proudly

served his country during Vietnam from 1972 until he was honorably discharged in 1976. Upon his discharge Roger returned to Hartford and started work at Thunderbirds Sports Store. He then put his firearm expertise to work as he began a career at Colt’s, Hoffman’s, Newington Gun Exchange, and Sadlak. Roger was a member of the Connecticut Rifle and Revolver Association, Metropolitan Shooters Inc., Wethersfield Club, Army Navy Club of Manchester, and the East Windsor Sportsman's Club. For over 20 years he traveled to Camp Perry, Ohio to participate in the National Pistol Championship competition shooting in the expert class level. In the Met League, Roger earned each of the 4 major league awards: Tony Christina 2000-2001, Ray Foster 2011-2012, Dell Coe 2004-2005, and Arnold Goodwin 2001-2002. Roger was always upbeat and friendly, taking an interest in helping new shooters. He will most certainly be missed by a great number of MSI members.

Louis J Tavano, Sr.

Lou Tavano, a member of the Capitol City team, passed away Friday, October 23, 2020 at the age of 77. Lou was an aerospace tool and die engineer for area manufacturing companies, most recently Jarvis Airfoil Inc. in Portland, CT. He enjoyed the outdoors and liked classic cars, attending cars shows, and NASCAR racing.
