Opera Atelier in Mozart’s

The Magic FluteSaturday, April 27, 2013, 8 pmSunday, April 28, 2013, 2 pmSouthern Theatre (21 E. Main St.)

Toronto-based Opera Atelier specializes in the production of opera, ballet, and drama from the 17th and 18th centuries, drawing upon the aesthetics and ideals of the period, showcasing soloists of international acclaim, and featuring period ballet, elaborate stage decor, exquisite costumes, and an imaginative energy that sets them apart. The Magic Flute tells the story of a prince named Tamino who is sent by The Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from her nemesis Sarastro. Accompanied by the endearingly incorrigible Papageno and the aid of a magic flute, the besotted Tamino ventures into the temple and quickly finds that all is not as it seems. An enchanting tale that delights audiences of all ages, The Magic Flute is perhaps Mozart’s greatest popular success. Sung in English with English SURTITLES™, the opera will be performed with the Opera Columbus Chorus and Columbus Symphony, and will feature the Artists of Atelier Ballet.

The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players in

H.M.S. PinaforeSaturday, June 8, 2013, 8 pmSunday, June 9, 2013, 2 pmSouthern Theatre (21 E. Main St.)

Ride a wave of music and laughter as romantic sailors, sisters, cousins, and aunts sing and dance their way across the deck of the fanciful British naval vessel with the improbable name. Set directly on the ship’s deck, this energetic production offers the rich sounds of a full orchestra, chorus, and soloists who seamlessly merge the classic elegance of the musical with a contemporary sense of humor to keep the show alive and exciting for a modern audience. Performed with the Opera Columbus Chorus and Columbus Symphony.

Dear Friends of Opera Columbus,We hope you enjoyed Opera Columbus’ inaugural season in our new home at the Southern Theatre, and that you are as excited as we are about the next season! The 2012–13 two-show season will see the return of Opera Atelier and their revival of Mozart’s wildly popular and hilarious The Magic Flute, and the back-by-popular-demand New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players in H.M.S. Pinafore. Both productions will again employ local artists–the Opera Columbus Chorus and the Columbus Symphony–and all performances will be held in the Southern Theatre.

In addition, Opera Columbus will collaborate with Shadowbox Live next season to launch a new program called Opera Cabaret. The program exposes new audiences to opera with live, abridged, English language performances of popular operas that are free of charge. The first Opera Cabaret presentation will be Puccini’s La Bohème.

Subscribers will be invited to be some of the first to experience La Bohème in this new performance format and location at an exclusive party at Shadowbox on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 7 pm. For $10, subscribers will enjoy the program, hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar.

As a subscriber, you’ll continue to enjoy the best seats at a discounted rate. Subscribers will also receive a Dine Originals discount card good for 20% off at participating restaurants (restrictions apply).

Please fill out and return the attached order form to the CAPA Ticket Center (39 E. State Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215) to make sure you get the best possible seats at your discounted price. If you require special arrangements, have questions, or need further information, please call the CAPA Ticket Center at 614-469-0939.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at the opera!

Sincerely,

Charles C. Warner President, Opera Columbus

About The Southern TheatreA Perfect FitBuilt in 1896, the historic Southern Theatre is located at 21 East Main Street, just two blocks south of the Ohio Theatre. Originally built as an opera house, the Southern was designed for live performances, and offers exceptional acoustics and an extraordinarily intimate setting. Additionally, a top-to-bottom renovation in 1998 brought modern amenities and comforts to its historical beauty and natural architectural acoustics, making the Southern Theatre ideal for showcasing the live performance of opera.

Comfortable AccommodationsWhen the Southern Theatre was renovated, special care was taken to ensure patron comfort. Because of the theatre’s jewel box architectural style, the furthermost seat from the stage is only 75 feet away, offering a guaranteed intimate experience no matter where you sit! Please let us know if you have special seating needs, as the main floor offers plenty of accessible seating in the rear floor section.

Convenient ParkingParking is available directly across the street at the Columbus Commons parking garage with clearly marked entrances on East Rich Street and East Main Street. Signs inside the garage will guide you to the theatre entrance, and a Columbus police officer will stop traffic both before and after the performance so you can safely cross East Main Street.
