Daniel TammetPresident’s Lecture SeriesThursday, October 25, 2007 8 PM$15

“Something in the way that Mr. Tammet describes the beautiful, aching, hallucinatory process of arriving at his answers illuminates the excitement of all cogitation.” – New York Times

Daniel Tammet is a high-functioning autistic savant. He can calculate huge sums in his head in seconds and instantaneously recognize prime numbers, but he finds emotions difficult to understand and has trouble telling left from right. He describes his visual experience of numbers as complex synaesthetic shapes with color, textureand motion. Thirty-seven is lumpy like porridge, while eighty-nine reminds him offalling snow. Sequences of digits form visual landscapes in his mind. One of fewerthan fifty such people living worldwide, Daniel is unique in his ability to articulate his savant experience.

Paul Taylor Dance CompanyCo-Presented by APB Cultural Arts CommitteeTuesday, April 22, 2008 8 PM$29, $25, $22 & $18

“The American spirit soars whenever Taylor’s dancers dance.” – San Francisco Chronicle

“Now the best New York has to offer in dance.” – New York Observer

Paul Taylor first presented his choreography with five other dancers and himself onMay 30, 1954 in Manhattan. That modest performance marked the beginning of ahalf-century of unrivaled creativity. In the decades to come, Mr. Taylor became a cultural icon — indeed, a living legend and one of history’s most celebrated artists. His choreography once deemed experimental, avant-garde and even “painful” to sitthrough, quickly became the gold standard of modern dance, one of America’s twoindigenous art forms (the other being jazz.) And he bridged, as no other choreogra-pher, the once-distant camps of ballet and modern dance by allowing internationallyacclaimed ballet companies to acquire the works he creates on his own celebratedtroupe. He has been showered with every prestigious award the United States andFrance can bestow on an artist. And, perhaps most remarkable of all, his creativepowers have shown no sign of abating even after 52 years and 124 dances.
