WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

A: I will thank you, O Lord my God, with all my heart,

C: and glorify your name forevermore. (Psalm 86:12)

(after the announcements)

A: Rejoicing in God’s saving grace, we seek our Lord’s wisdom and strength:

C: “To honor God, to reach out with love to our members

and the community and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.” (Haven Lutheran’s Mission Statement)

PRELUDE “Soon and Very Soon” arr. Jack Schrader

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

whose steadfast love is everlasting,

whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation.

C: Amen. P: Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin.

(Silence is kept for reflection.)

P: Reconciling God,

C: we confess that we do not trust your abundance,

and we deny your presence in our lives.

We place our hope in ourselves

and rely on our own efforts.

We fail to believe that you provide enough for all.

We abuse your good creation for our own benefit.

We fear difference and do not welcome others

as you have welcomed us.

We sin in thought, word, and deed.

By your grace, forgive us;

through your love, renew us; and in your Spirit, lead us;

so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen. P: Beloved of God,

by the radical abundance of divine mercy

we have peace with God through ☩ Christ Jesus,

through whom we have obtained grace upon grace.

Our sins are forgiven.

Let us live now in hope. For hope does not disappoint,

because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

THE SERMON Pastor Linda Alessandri

THE HYMN OF THE DAY “Healer of Our Every Ill” #612

THE PRAYERS

Confident of your care and helped by the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world,

and all who are in need. (A brief silence.)

Lord, you gather the church to be part of your mission as ambassadors of Jesus Christ.

As Jesus acknowledged the great faith of a woman from outside his people, help your

church discover and find blessing in the faith of people we might reject. Lord, in your

mercy,

hear our prayer.

You have blessed us with the bounty of the earth. Grant your grace to all your creatures,

that the earth will flourish. Relieve waters choked by garbage, renew soils stripped of

nutrients, and refresh the air all creatures need to live. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Page 9: Season after Pentecost · Marissa and Family *Gwen & Larry Bergy *Dawn Alamong Hayzlett *Ron Wyrick & Family ... McKenzie III, Nathan Snell, Hunter Wiles and Ben Zinkand. Hospital

9

You call the nations to be glad and sing for joy. Let your way be known among all the

nations of the world, now divided by competing interests, contending alliances, and

consumed by enormous worry. Surround our brothers and sisters suffering and

recovering in Beirut, Lebanon. Protect those sent in harm’s way for the sake of peace,

especially Gavin Anderson, Ben Asbury, Richard Collins, Cole Conrad, Matthew

Donald, William Dorsky, Nick Graham, Jacob Kercheval, Michael McKenzie III,

Nathan Snell, Hunter Wiles and Ben Zinkand. Bless us and make your face shine upon

all. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

You show unexpected mercy, kindness, and generosity. We pray for those who do not

have enough, for outcasts in our villages, cities, and town, and for those who need your

healing especially

In you we live and move and have our being. Grant our congregation grace to find our life

refreshed in you. Accompany us in the disrupted rhythms of late summer. Give us rest and

renewal, and strengthen us for the future we can’t quite see and for mission in your name.

Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Your eternal promises are more than we could ever imagine. As you gather all the saints,

join us also with them on the great day of your salvation. Lord, in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

In the certain hope that nothing can separate us from your love, we offer these prayers to

you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

THE PEACE

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us offer one another a sign of God's peace.

THE OFFERING

P: It's Offering Time!

C: Praise God!

Thank you for your faithful generosity. May God bless what we give and use it to bring

wholeness, healing and hope to God's world. Amen.

THE OFFERTORY PRAYER

A: Giver of all good things, let your grace flow through us;

a generous stream, unstoppable, refreshing, abundant.

C: We release these gifts into your river of love.

Help them to flow out to serve you and our neighbors. Amen.

PRAYER WHEN WE ARE UNABLE TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION

A: My Jesus, on the day of my baptism you poured your love into my heart

through the Holy Spirit who unites me eternally to you and your creation.

C: Though I cannot at this moment receive you in holy communion,

let me be consumed by your complete desire for me so that my longing for you

may be filled by your love alone

and your mercy overflow through me into this world so in need. Amen.

THE LORDS PRAYER

P: Lord, remember us in your Kingdom and teach us to pray:

C: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

SENDING

BLESSING

P: Go into your week with your ears pitched

to the sound of God’s voice calling your name.

☩ Go into your week with your eyes peeled

for the face of Jesus in unexpected places.

Go into your week with your soul poised

to receive the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Peace.

C: Amen.

A BELATED THANKS TO OUR COVID- DEFYING POTOMAC TOWERS

Thursday in a month. On July 30, Prue Yelinek, Kelly Bracken, Valerie Wills, and Susan

Strobl (their families) put together bagged lunches and delivered them to Potomac Towers.

We thank you for helping us to keep our promise and provide a meal for our brothers and

sisters at Potomac Towers.

FROM ANYONE YET.

BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER BOWL (BBBS) FOR

KIDS RESCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 Haven has sponsored a team three different times… always

having a good time. This year COVID required the April

event to be cancelled. But now there are three options

available for us to participate to support this important mentoring program for our

community’s kids. Would anyone like to come bowl with me on September 27 OR a day

of our choosing? Look over the precautions they have set in place and the other options. If

you would like to participate, please let me know ASAP. You can send an e-mail to the

14

Raise money with your team and schedule a time to bowl on September 27, 2020,

between 11AM-5PM.

We will be implementing safety and health precautions that include the following:

Check-in for bowling teams will take place outside Turner’s Dual Lanes,

where distancing and crowd reduction can be maintained.

All guests will be asked to wear masks, at least until they arrive at their

assigned lane. At that point, wearing a mask, or not, will be left up to team

members.

Bowling balls and shoes will be sanitized for teams.

Bowling teams will be distanced with at least one vacant lane between them

and another team.

Door prizes will be given throughout the day.

Hot dogs and sodas will be available outside following the event.

2. Forego the 9/27/20 Event & Individually Schedule Bowling at Turner’s Dual

Lanes Raise money with your team and schedule a time to bowl between 9/1/20-9/27/20.

This is a good option for those who enjoy bowling for a great cause but want to avoid a

group event.

3. Forego Bowling at Turner’s Dual Lanes but Still Raise Money for BBBS’ Bowl

for Kids’ Sake Those raising at least $30 will receive an event t-shirt and the opportunity to stop by

begin to gather again for worship, we will resume collecting items needed for the ministry

of Holly Place. Until that time, continue to send your donations, designating them for

Holly Place on the check’s memo line or on an envelope.

DAY OF CARING 2020 COVID-19 UPDATE

Your United Way understands the effects that COVID-

19 is having on our community, right here in

Washington County. This is why we are actively

preparing a change in plans for this year's annual Day

of Caring. We still have every intention of hosting

Washington County's largest volunteer effort on September 17th. However, we are fully

aware that this year will be different. We understand that many projects and events will

need to be restructured, postponed and cancelled due to the health and safety of all

involved. We will adjust to the changes as they continue to take place and will follow the

CDC requirements and Governor's orders at that time.

Our community needs this day, now more than ever. We need the support from our

volunteers and community partners. Every year, our area's nonprofit agencies and

residents who are elderly, disabled, low-income, and military veterans rely on volunteers

to make positive change happen. This year we understand volunteer recruitment will be a

major challenge. We are calling upon you, our community, to think outside the box.

Consider alternative options such as virtual or remote projects. Is there an alternative

project you or your team would be interested in completing? What else can you do to show

how you #LIVEUNITED? Show us how you make change happen in Washington County

(all year long). Tell us how you care for friends, family, neighbors and our community.
