Bookings for the 2019 Season are open!
WELCOME FROM THE GOVERNOR-GENERALLynne and I would like to welcome you to Government House for the annual Canberra Symphony Orchestra Prom Concert.
For 36 years the people of Canberra and the surrounding region have been bringing their blankets, hats, chairs and picnic baskets to Government House and enjoying the wonderful music of the CSO.
The event is a chance to enjoy a world-class orchestral performance in the spectacular grounds of Government House.
This year we welcome renowned conductor and all-round musical entertainer Guy Noble to the podium, along with the 2016 IFAC Australian Singing Competition prize-winner soprano, Morgan Balfour as soloist. Today’s entertainment promises an enjoyable and accessible mix of classical favourites with everything from Mendelssohn to Puccini, and Bernstein to Tchaikovsky.
Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the Government House grounds and the music and atmosphere of the CSO Prom Concert, the finale of the 2018 CSO season.
His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd)
WELCOME Thank you for joining us today at the 36th annual Shell Prom concert. The CSO is pleased to share this perennial favourite with you today. I know you will join me in thanking the Governor General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) and Her
Excellency Lady Cosgrove for opening their beautiful gardens to us. What better way to spend the first day of summer, than with friends, family, food and of course, exceptional music.
Our thanks to Shell Australia whose partnership with the CSO goes back to 1980. We are grateful to Shell for this generous support, and honoured to have such a wonderful relationship with an organisation so committed to contributing to the cultural life of our city.
Next year the CSO Season opens with a bang as the orchestra ventures out of the concert hall and into your community. First stop Queanbeyan, for Music by the River, presented by Icon Water in partnership with the Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council on 2 March. Then, as part of the Enlighten Festival, the ACT Government in conjunction with the CSO present Sunday Night Fever, featuring the Best of the Bee Gees on 10 March, Stage 88. We hope you will come along with family and friends to these hugely popular free events.
Also in March, the CSO proudly presents the opening concert for the third season of its Australian Series presented by Singapore Airlines and hosted by the National Portrait Gallery. The Power of One features the ‘sorceress of percussion’ Claire Edwardes, who takes to the stage alone to present a stunning array of recent solo works by Australian composers, including a brand new CSO commission by young indigenous composer Rhyan Clapham. After the concert, the NPG invites you to explore the power of a single photograph at its National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition.
The CSO’s ActewAGL Llewellyn Series kicks off in early April when Jessica Cottis returns to Canberra to take us for a walk on the wild side. Nigel Westlake’s Spirit of the Wild (Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra) was written for, and features CSO 2019 Artist in Focus, renowned oboist Diana Doherty. From the wilderness of Tasmania to the rugged landscapes of Scotland, this concert ends with Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony.
Christmas is around the corner, and if you find yourself trying to find the perfect gift, look no further. You can relax knowing that CSO gift vouchers are available online, anytime, including Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.
As ever, we sincerely thank the ACT Government, the Australia Council and all of our partners and donors for their generous support in 2019. Also, the CSO applauds you, our patrons, for your continued support throughout the year. On behalf of the CSO Board, musicians, and staff we wish you all the best for a joyous festive season.

The Kingsland Resident Artist Program
The Kingsland Resident Artist Program creates new professional pathways for the next generation of outstanding Australian musicians. Selected musicians are offered a two-year residency with the CSO in Canberra, gaining professional experience in orchestral and ensemble performance, teaching and arts administration. The Resident Artists will gain a portfolio of experience not offered anywhere in Australia.
Under the guidance of CSO’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Dr Nicholas Milton AM, the Residents Artists rehearse and perform with the orchestra and as part of CSO ensembles.
The Residents undertake professional development in instrumental music pedagogy, marketing, networking, grant writing, and business and tax management for self-employed artists. At the end of the program, they have the option to continue as rank-and-file CSO musicians.
Residents will also:• undertake masterclasses with guest soloists and
senior CSO musicians• collaborate with the ANU School of Music and Music
for Canberra • work with young musicians in schools across the city • connect with donors and corporate partners
This program exists only through the generous support of the founding donors – the Late Sir Richard Kingsland, Lady Kingsland and their family. Their vision can only be fully realised if this unique program can become self-sustaining.
With increased support from individuals and companies we can secure the Kingsland Resident Artist program into the future.
You can help by:• donate online at cso.org.au/kingsland-resident-artists/• hire a CSO Ensemble for your next private
celebration or public event.

THE CSO WOULD LIKE TO THANK THESE ORGANISATIONS FOR THEIR GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE 2018 SHELL PROM CONCERT.
HeartStrings a delightful – and easy – way to help those in need
When you look around at the picnicking masses, spare a thought for those who have been touched by the CSO’s HeartStrings program – CSO supporters who’ve donated tickets to CSO concerts, or individuals and families needing a break from difficult moments who’ve graciously received them.
Through generous donations from CSO donors, local businesses and the ACT Government, the CSO offers free tickets to individuals and families who would love to experience symphonic music but can’t because of financial constraints, social isolation or other hindering factors. These HeartStrings tickets are distributed through local community organisations and charities.
These organisations are best placed to know who would benefit most by an afternoon’s music in the sun (at the time of writing, the Shell Prom forecast was glorious sunshine, a gentle breeze, not too hot…), sharing the experience with friends and family in the gardens of Government House.
It is the CSO’s great pleasure to work with these organisations. We reckon it is the best part of the job!
You can give the gift of live orchestral music to more people in need by donating to the HeartStrings program. If you’d like to help someone experience the orchestra for the first time, please consider donating to the HeartStrings program through our website up until 31 December 2018 – a donation of two tickets to a CSO concert as a Christmas gift, for instance – or contact the CSO directly.Donate online at cso.org.au/heartstringsTim Langford – Philanthropy. 02 6247 9191 [email protected]
