April 2018 Newsletter Page 1 Season 2018 – April Newsletter Umpires ……. Ahh!!!! .. Did you see the mistakes he / she made .. I can't believe them not getting in the right position time after time .. If only they kept up with the game yes the above may be true for some umpires during some games but they are just as relevant to players from our teams during each game, yes our players make mistakes in each game and yet we don't scream from the sidelines at them for it, we don't question every time our players lose the ball, miss a shot, miss a tackle, etc, etc - so why do we think it should be different because they are an Umpire. By all means play hard on the ground, barrack strongly from the stands but do so in a respectful way. If you hear a Canterbury member or supporter making unnecessary remarks from the ground, sidelines or in the stands re the Umpiring, have the courage to suggest to the person that it is inappropriate. remember - Respectful Players (including parents, carers, supporters) lead to a Respectful Team which combined with the other Canterbury teams creates a Respectful Club. We all have an important role in achieving this. Thank You to all our Sponsors Please Support them

Umpiring Speaking of Umpires - our club has very few of them. In fact we really don't have enough available each week for the teams we enter across all grades – seniors and juniors. This is very disappointing. We only have a couple for A Pool, with none for Premier League men. Yes we can use excuses like some of our A Pool players have left this season otherwise we would be fine, but really we should have several which means you only need to umpire every 4 or 5 weeks unless you really want to do more. So consider what role you can play to assist the club in overcoming this issue. If you are an A Pool player then you have the basic knowledge of hockey to start umpiring. We will develop your skills in this area. Don't be surprised if a Committee members requests you to umpire or match manage. After all being a member of Canterbury is more than just turning up to play each week, there are lots of other roles and functions that need to be undertaken to enable you to play. If you aren't already involved with Canterbury in a capacity other than a player, how about taking on a role, just ask a Committee member. Player Safety – Short Corners Face masks are available for all senior players for short corners. For Juniors facemasks MUST be worn for short corners. Males should also consider wearing a protective box just as in cricket.
