Jo and I had lunch out Wednesday in the glorious September sunshine and what was on the menu, fish from Brixham. Was there any other choice to be made? Couldn’t help reflecting how remarkable it is to get such fresh fare onto our tables in time for lunch all the way from Brixham. However was highly amused to overhear a customer saying to the waitress ‘There was nothing wrong with the fish but it was a little too fishy.’ Make what you will of that. Our visitors today are nicknamed the Fishermen and isn’t that reflected in the excellent lunches we all enjoy when Brixham are the hosts. My only regret is I have missed our last two visits, family weddings or something. However I am around today to offer a warm welcome to our visitors from the West Country. I don’t think either team will be pleased with their start to the new campaign but at least Brixham have some league points from a draw against neighbours Newton Abbot while we have none, just two losing bonus points. As can been seen from the beautifully presented statistics elsewhere in the programme, we lie a couple of places above Brixham and although it is early in the season both sides are fully aware that they have given up enough points already if they have any ambitions for higher things.

At Bracknell last week, fullback Alex Sutherland suffered a sickening injury to his mouth when he collided with the Bracknell hooker and captain Michael Clarke. Michael promptly put out a picture of the injury to his head over social media and it was not for the faint hearted. There are some drawbacks to this instantaneous technology it seems to me. Far too graphic. It was pretty miserable day at Lily Hill Park and Alex’s injury was a real dampener. We wish them both well and a speedy recovery. I am delighted to report that Alex turned up at training Thursday night, driven down by his father and he looked remarkably well despite one’s worst fears.

We offer a warm welcome to Owen Venables our referee today making his third visit to Chapel Gate, having been in charge of this game back in December and our match against Newton Abbot in April. An old school pal of mine, Brian Wright is our referee adviser today and we welcome him to Chapel Gate with the hope they both enjoy their afternoon.

Good to see the return of Rob Bruce and Andy Spikings after lengthy lay-offs with their enthusiasm to play undimmed.

Very sad to have had to attend the funeral of Dai Dower who died on August 1st. He was a terrific boxer being British, European and Empire (as it was then) Champion. Although diminutive of stature, he fought as a flyweight, he was large in every other respect. Generous, amusing, unassuming and a great club man, playing scrum-half. I first met him when I played scrum-half for Bournemouth School for Boys against the Bournemouth RFC B XV in the 1958/9 season. It was notable for me because I came up against somebody smaller than myself for the first time. It was great to play against Dai and I was to play with him when I joined Bournemouth in the 60s. Another death recently was that of another contemporary, Tony Brooks. He was a lock and one of my first memories playing for Bournemouth but he also introduced me to sailing when he was desperate for a crew one Saturday afternoon. Sad also to learn from Christine that Nigel Brown has been unwell for some time and was thus unable to come to the lunch today. Tempus fugit (really shouldn’t use Latin anymore).

Despite the melancholy, enjoy your afternoon.Doug Warren, President.

Coaches’ CornerHello one and all and welcome to Chapel Gate for our opening home fixture of the season.

You find us already two games in to the season and in truth we are disappointed with what has gone before. We are an incredibly ambitious group and we genuinely believe that we are capable of achieving promotion this season, however we have made things considerably harder for ourselves than we would have wanted.

Pre-season went really very well with good performances against Brighton and Bishop Stortford. We have recruited well and have seen players arrive that will add to the talent pool across almost all positions. So it is even more frustrating that we sit without a win from two. However, I am not without hope, and I am expecting a knee jerk reaction this week with our first home game. Going away to Salisbury we were unlucky to have to face the elements first up. Had we played with the conditions and built a lead I think that the league new boys would have struggled to hunt us down, as it was they got a strong foothold in the game and we were never able to kill that enthusiasm. Last week we travelled to Bracknell and whilst the absentees were missed, as they attended Luca’s wedding, we still certainly had a squad more than good enough to have won. Alex Sutherland’s injury and Scott Chislett’s red card further disrupted our plans and we gave up a winning position. We didn’t play well and in truth neither did they. What they did have was a little more control, something we have worked on this week. We want to play our game and to attack in areas that will cause the opposition the most amount of discomfort.

A quick look through the squad list will see few new names, as the existing players have upped their game to retain their shirts. We do have two home debutants, David Bates and Adam Davies. Batesy is a great addition to our squad. He is a superb line-out technician who takes pride in success rates and

creating that platform, with two tries this season already he has demonstrated that he is a threat with ball in hand and he is already well respected in the squad. What he cant help though, and in truth they are two fundamental failings, is his northerness, which when you speak as much as Batesy can become tiresome, as you are trying to decipher each word and the fact he is a Pongo (Member of the British Army), still it ticks off two of our quota for political correctness; northern monkey and future security guy at Asda!! Adam Davies is the other newbie (ticking the box for athletes of limited stature). Ad is a wonderful rugby player, he offers a threat at all he does, as a distributor, as a balanced runner, as a kicking pragmatist and as a high percentage goal kicker. He communicates really well and is a rugby geek. He and Batesy have increased the words per minute of the squad by about double but in truth they both speak an enormous amount of sense. Adam does take his geekiness to extremes, planning new ball diaries to ensure that they are kicked in properly and don’t exceed the optimum performance. Look out today for the odd maverick touch and innovation.

The talking now needs to stop. We have all had our say and addressed issues but in truth it was what happens on the pitch this afternoon that we will all be judged by. Brixham are tough opponents and we will need to come out firing, we need to be relentless, play in the moment and trust in one and other and the game plan. Enjoy the game and I hope to share a beer with you all later having got that first win.CheersWillPS You will see a camera crew wandering around today. They are filming a fly-on-the-wall show called Rugby Nats. To watch our episode next week, go to Youtube, type in Rugby Nats and see the boys preparing for this week.

In 1850,Rugby Union Football was introduced to Brixham, when a newly ordained curate arrived from Cambridge University. At this stage there were few laws, the game essentially a type of mob football played mainly by local fishermen. In 1875 Brixham RFC was formed and became one of the founder members of Devon RFU one of six survivors. Brixham played their rugby on Furzeham Green until 1896 when they moved to their present ground.

1924 to 1934 was one of the best periods in the Club’s history when it won the Devon Cup twice and were runners up on four occasions but ran into financial difficulties. In 1934, two local men, Messrs Astley and Smardon, purchased the ground and gave it back to the town on the understanding that the Club play on the ground free of rent and rates for as long as the Club was in existence. A privilege enjoyed to this day.

In 1945 rugby restarted after the war years under the captaincy of Jimmy Merchant, who had returned to his home club having played for Plymouth Albion and Torquay. In 1964 improvements were made to the ground and clubhouse and in 1974 floodlights were installed. However increased success both on and off the pitch demanded a larger clubhouse and in 1978 the clubhouse was demolished and the present facilities constructed.

In 1981 Brixham were admitted to the Bass Merit Table for Senior West Country Clubs, the breakthrough needed for Brixham to advance. In 1985, Brixham defeated a Bath side, containing eleven internationals, 9-6 and who had been undefeated in England for 18 months.

With The English Clubs Rugby Union Championship (the leagues) beginning in 1987/1988, Brixham were placed in SW2. In 1988, as finalists in the Devon Cup, Brixham gained entry to the National Cup Competition winning the first two rounds and eventually being beaten by Gloucester in the third round. In the season 1995/1996, seven Brixham players played for Devon in a County Championship match. In 1996/7, Brixham were relegated from SW1 but in 1999/2000, the Club celebrated 125 years and the 1st XV enjoyed its best season for ten years. In 2007, the 1st XV lost in a play-off for promotion to SW1 to our hosts today. The next year the extension was completed and opened by the President of the RFU, Brian Williams. In 2010, Brixham reached the final of the Devon Senior Cup and in 2012 Brixham won SW1 gaining promotion to National League 3 – the club having enjoyed its most successful season ever. Last season (2015/2016) Brixham finished 4th.
