Neither pestilence, starvation, nor betrayal can stop Ross Poldark from fighting for justice in his native Cornwall. Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) returns as the ex-officer, class warrior, lover and mining entrepreneur, called by The New York Times “the noblest, hottest, most down-to-earth hero.” Poldark, Season 2 airs on MASTERPIECE in nine gripping new episodes, premiering Sunday, Sept. 25 at 8 pm.

Also back is co-star Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley), playing Demelza, the miner’s daughter who is Ross’ equal in passion, wit, and daring—which is, of course, why they marry.

The returning cast includes Heida Reed (One Day) as Ross’ first love, Elizabeth. Also back are Jack Farthing (Poirot) as George Warleggan, the arch-villain who does his best to do in our hero; along with Philip Davis (White Teeth) and Beatie Edney (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) as Ross’ exasperating servants, Jud and Prudie Paynter.

New this season — or thrust into prominence from last — are Gabriella Wilde (Endless Love) as Caroline Penvenen, a flirtatious young heiress under the watchful eye of her rich uncle, played by John Nettles (Midsomer Murders); Luke Norris (Titanic) as earnest young doctor Dwight Enys, who only has time for his patients — and for Caroline; and Henry Garrett (Zero Dark Thirty) as Captain McNeil, Ross’ old comrade from the war, now hunting smugglers and an opportunity to woo a certain married lady.

Oh, and for those hoping for some more Aidan Turner shirtless scenes, sorry to disappoint — Poldark isn’t losing his shirt this season. As show writer Debbie Horsfield puts it, “autumn is very chilly in Cornwall” — the time and location for the start of this season’s filming. The first season benefitted from one of the warmer summers on record.

Best Days for the Best Dose of Best-Ofs…“I Miss Downton Abbey!” — if this is your lament, well, you’re certainly not alone. If you’ve been searching the

schedule for a period drama to take its place but nothing has quite struck a chord with you yet, take heart — we are giving you TWO more chances to relive the most shining moments of this beloved MASTERPIECE series.

It begins with I Miss Downton Abbey, a 90-minute special that combines clips from all six seasons and new interview sound bites with exclusive, never-before-seen “behind-the-scenes” footage from Season 6. Catch it Thursday, Sept. 1 at 8:30 pm.

Then on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 11 am, we begin an 11-hour marathon of My Favourite Downton Abbey — a compilation of viewer favorite episodes from the entire series.

If you didn’t participate in the online survey, you only have yourself — well, and your friends and neighbors who did — to blame for the selections. This was truly a “local choice” process! Sit down, tune in and enjoy what made the A-list.

Aidan Turner is Ross Poldark, returning for a second season of this Masterpiece redux.

From the Board…Hello Friends,

I will be honest with you — I never know what I should be writing about in this column. Should I give you “the facts and nothing but the facts?” Should it be just about the business of the Board? Should the message be inspirational? Motivational?

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 “To every season there is a reason…”

The other day, I attended the funeral of a friend and this was one of the readings. As I was reflecting on the words it struck me how close to home this hits. “A time to be born and a time to die….” I have a new great nephew who is so precious and, at 7 months, is in the spring of his life. My 92½-year-old father is in the winter of his life — the days are waning and darkness will soon be here.

“A time to plant and a time to pluck up that what is planted….” My Dad’s garden is just starting to produce bushels of zucchini, green beans, baby potatoes and baby carrots — a time to pluck for sure.

“…A time to heal….” Today, I am, as I have been for the past several days, sitting in the CICU at Sacred Heart Hospital. I am thankful for all of the excellent doctors, nurses and other staff who are caring for Dad in addition to all of the other patients. This is a good time for me to publicly thank Providence Health Care for underwriting our KSPS show, Health Matters, TELEVISION FOR LIFE. This monthly, live, call-in program brings the region’s top health care providers together to answer your health-related questions and connect viewers to crucial resources. You can also email questions any time to: [email protected]. My dad loves this show because he can count on learning some new bit of information that he is happy to pass on to others. This is true lifelong learning — and I am so thankful he instilled this desire in me. We need to keep our brains active because an active brain is a healthy brain and good health (gray) matters!

Another form of health & wellness learning can be found on the KSPS website. Online you will find links to a variety of pages dealing with health issues and your children can watch FitKids! videos. I just viewed one showing children how to brush their teeth. Although my great nephew doesn’t have teeth yet, his mother can certainly pick up tips on how to brush her son’s teeth correctly and ultimately teach him the proper way.

KSPS — lifelong learning delivered to you in the comfort of your home or on your mobile device. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Stay well my friends!

The Coolest Place to Play on a Warm August Day!Nearly a thousand children and families attended

KSPS Fit Kids Day on August 5th! We had a great time playing games, enjoying the weather and getting our pictures taken with Bob the Builder™, Clifford, Daniel Tiger and Aqua Duck.

A huge thanks to the 50+ volunteers, including Boys & Girls Clubs of Spokane County who helped us set up the event, play with the kids, and tear down afterword. Special thanks go to Spokane County Library District and Inland Northwest Early Learning Alliance for providing fun and educational activities for the littlest attendees. And we appreciate the help of Spokane Public Schools for providing a great location for our event!

…In Memory

AMONG FRIENDSIn It for the Long Haul…

5 decades, 18,262 days, and countless hours of great programs…welcome to our 50th!

KSPS got its start the way many public television stations did back in the ’60s — as a way to bring the classroom home. When KSPS began broadcasting on Monday April 24, 1967, the daytime programming consisted of everything from math and science to Driver’s Ed…with a smattering of drama programs in the evening.

Now, nearly 50 years later…the classroom lessons have been replaced by character educators — Daniel Tiger, Peg+Cat and the Kratt Brothers (definitely a couple of characters).

And that potpourri of programming has been replaced by the most robust, diverse, entertaining and informative programs on television

But our biggest change came three years ago, when the Spokane Public Schools transferred the broadcast license to the Friends of KSPS, giving us the challenge and the opportunity to assume the operation of KSPS…and what a three years it’s been.

We’ve made more new hires than we had in the previous ten; we’ve bolstered our fundraising efforts on both sides of the border, with additions in areas that are going to be key to our future; we’ve spent significant dollars on essential equipment to maintain and improve our operational performance and delivery; and we’ve grown to more than 31,000 members from Spokane, Idaho, Montana, Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer….and even just shy of the North Pole.

Our internationally renowned documentaries continue to be recognized for their quality and storytelling. We entered a program — Born to Learn— in the Regional Emmys for the first time in almost a decade…and received a nomination for it. And now that we’re back in the game, we plan to be there for a while.

Our Downton Abbey Binge Watch Weekend was such a success PBS is taking it nationwide on Labor Day Weekend. Our community outreach is growing and every new partnership begets new opportunities to find friends, donors and members.

We’ve accomplished quite a bit in three years. And while we understand our responsibility to be good stewards of the dollars we receive — locally, regionally and nationally — we’re ready to do more.

So, as we approach our 50th, we thank all of the people who put KSPS on the air, those who have built it into the community asset it remains today and thank you all for helping us get here. We ask you to continue supporting our efforts and encourage you to bring more Friends to the KSPS family as we approach our goal of 50,000 Members by our 50th.

That would truly be the gift the keeps on giving…now and in what we are confident will be a very bright future.

Sincerely,

Gary Stokes

Program Sponsor ProfileKSPS is pleased to welcome The Mighty Mouth campaign as a

sponsor of our KSPS FitKids! intiative.

The Mighty Mouth is committed to lasting approaches to improving the oral — and overall — health of everyone in Washington. The Mighty Mouth campaign is delivering the message, “You’re healthier with a healthy mouth” and is motivating people to do more to prevent oral disease. Oral health is a critical part of overall health for everyone — children and adults.

• Did you know tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease but it is preventable? Brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, regular checkups and smart snacking will help children stay healthy. These steps are especially important because Spokane does not have enough fluoride in the water to help protect teeth.

• Did you know it is important for children to clean between teeth with floss, a tiny brush or dental stick as soon as teeth touch? Brushing only reaches 60 percent of tooth surfaces. Set an example for your children and clean between your teeth every day.

• Did you know fluoride toothpaste, rinses and varnish are important to strengthen teeth and prevent decay?

• Did you know it’s not just sugary foods that cause cavities? Even snacks that many people think are “healthy,” such as granola bars and raisins, stick to teeth and cause decay if eaten too often. Choose tooth-friendly snacks such as fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and cheese.

• Did you know frequent snacking or drinking sweet or acidic beverages— including juice, sports drinks, soda (even diet) — leads to cavities? Give teeth a rest and reduce the amount of time food and sweet drinks spend on teeth.

The Mighty Mouth, like KSPS, knows the value of education and creating healthy habits early and is proud to partner in this effort. Visit TheMightyMouth.org to learn more about the power of oral health and for a Guide to Smart Snacking.
