Seasearch Scotland Summary Report 2016 3
Background to Seasearch in Scotland Seasearch is a project for volunteer sports divers who have an interest in what they’re seeing
underwater, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment around the
coasts of Britain and Ireland. The main aim is to map the various types of habitats found in the near-
shore zone around the whole of Britain and Ireland. In addition volunteers record the species they
see in each area, establishing the richest sites for marine life, the sites where there are problems and
hence, the sites which need protection. The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) coordinates
Seasearch across the British Isles. For more information visit the Seasearch website
www.seasearch.org.uk
Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) provided funding for two Seasearch coordinators in Scotland during
2016: Natalie Hirst (NH) coordinated Seasearch on a national level; and Owen Paisley (OP)
coordinated activities in Argyll and the west of Scotland. MCS colleague Calum Duncan (CD)
supported the project by providing advice, additional resources and promotion through MCS
outreach activities.
Courses Two Observer courses were held during 2016 in Gourock and Dunstaffnage with 12 and 6
participants respectively. One Surveyor course was held during 2016 at the Field Studies Council
Millport Marine station, Isle of Cumbrae with 6 participants. The observer courses were held over 1
day, with an option to complete 2 training dives the following day .The surveyor course was held
over 2 days and included a training dive with Tutors (Table 1.)

Volunteer diving records and dive surveys Twenty four different survey regions were covered by Seasearch survey dives during 2016, equating
to 304 individual survey forms. Some dives were conducted to search for Priority Marine Features
(PMFs) species such as horse mussels and fireworks anemones. Some dives took place to survey PMF
habitats including flame shell reefs, maerl beds, horse mussel beds and burrowed mud. A number of
‘gap filling’ dives were conducted in places for which there were no or relatively few existing
Seasearch records such as lesser dived spots of the Orkney islands, and Skye. Other dives took place
at well known dive sites where data adds to time series monitoring such as the popular dive sites of
the west coast sealochs and NE coastal sites such as St. Abbs. Many of the dives that took place were
in recently designated MPAs. A total of 70 volunteer divers took part in surveys, which equating to
over 300 ‘diver days’; the number of days volunteers gave to Seasearch.
Seasearch organised trips Targeted dive trips organised by Seasearch included South Skye, Sound of Jura, Loch Shira, Loch
Sunart, Loch Hourn , Sound of Mull, Loch Tarbert, Loch Fyne and Orkney. Details of trips organised
by the West coast coordinator Owen Paisley to Loch Shira, Loch Sunart, Loch Fyne, Loch Tarbert,
Sound of Mull and Jura can be found in the West Coast 2016 summary report. Details of the
remaining trips organised by Coordinator Natalie Hirst can be seen below;
Seasearch Scotland Summary Report 2016 5
South Skye sea lochs
Seasearch was invited to undertake surveys in the South Skye region by the South Skye Sealochs
Initative group. The SSSI had highlighted the need for greater marine biological data for the southern
sealochs in particular, due to the growing concern for fish farm applications in the area, which could
potentially be granted with minimal information about the impact they may have on the
environment.
As such, as Seasearch already had a dedicated group of divers including Neil MacInnes based on or
near the island, we were able to run a 4 day expedition based from Ord, accessing Loch Slapin, Loch
Eishort, and Loch Skavaig using Lochaline Dive Charters’ vessel.
The trip carried out 8 dives throughout the sealochs successfully, further expanding on known
records of Maerl, as well as adding records of other sensitive species including Kelp habitats, and
rare nudibranch species.
Loch Hourn Darwen SAC
Seasearch was approached by the Darwen subaqua club, in order to aid in recording habitat
information on one of their annual expeditions. The club had previously noted Maerl at sites in Loch
Hourn, but wanted Seasearch to come along to ensure that the data was of use and got to the right
place. Experienced Seasearcher George Brown attended the trip with the club and not only
produced Seasearch forms with extensive species lists and records of Maerl distribution but also
contributed to the club trip report to BSAC. The club has since won the BSAC Expedition award for
the trip efforts.
Orkney PMF expedition
Seasearch coordinator Natalie Hirst liaised with Orkney area tutor Joanne Porter with the help of
SNH to target lesser known areas of Orkney. The trip was carried out from the MV Halton under
skipper Bob Anderson. Of particular focus were the areas outside of the popular Scapa Flow area, in
order to further our knowledge of PMFs such as Horse mussels and Limaria beds around Orkney, as
well as aiding a university student’s MSc thesis by providing habitat information at sites recorded for
Otter holts. Although only 7 divers attended the trip, it was a great success with 36 forms completed
for the week, from a variety of habitats recording a number of PMF including Limaria beds, and data
from previously undived sites such as a pinnacle off Auskerry.

Non-diving events Public engagement through workshops, shows, conferences and other events are a vital part of the
Seasearch coordinator role, to spread awareness of marine issues and educate diver and non-divers
how they can get involved. Talks about the project and its achievements were delivered at a number
of events (Table 3) by Seasearch Coordinators. Further to this CD, OP, and NH wrote four MCS
articles for the regular Seasearch slot in the quarterly Scottish Diver magazine.
NH attended both days of the Great Northern Dive Show along with National coordinator Charlotte
Bolton, as Seasearch representatives on the MCS stand at the show 23/24th April.
The Porcupine Marine Natural History Society annual conference 11TH-13TH March was attended by
Charlotte Bolton, Liz Morris-Webb, Paula Lightfoot and Scotland coordinators OP and NH, with a
presentation given by OP.
Seasearch was invited to give a presentation at the MCS AGM and conference in Edinburgh on 26th
October, which was delivered by NH, with the conference attended by OP and Charlotte Bolton.
Seasearch coordinator NH also gave a presentation at the TWIC (The Wildlife Information Centre)
conference 26th November.
Figure 4 Seasearch stand at the Autumn TWIC conference, and article in Scottish diver magazine
Finally a meeting was organised by NH, with SNH representatives, and funding staff at the SNH
Inverness office to discuss progress and goals for the next funding round, attended by NH and CD on
skype.

Data In total 304 forms were logged into Marine Recorder for 2016 from Scotland. Forms were
received from 70 different observers and surveyors as well as various buddy pairings of the
same. To note Seasearch Scotland recognised a lack of data from the NE coast in particular and
the outer Hebridean islands, and made this a key focus for 2017’s diving activities.
