The Strategy: Planning Your Search

Define the information need and state it as a question or statement Stating your information need as a question or a statement helps you define it and understand the relationships between its component parts. Example: I want articles providing evidence of effectiveness of reducing house mites as a treatment for asthma in adults.

Break the question/ statement into its component concepts Identify the important concepts from the question. Example: 1) asthma, 2) treatment, 3) house mites 4) adults 5) evidence of effectiveness.

Identify synonyms for each concept

Consult the thesaurus for synonyms used in the database(s) which you plan to search. The Medline database contains Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). In PubMed, use the MeSH Database to use MeSH terms. Consider keywords, also, for concepts which are not found in the MeSH Database. Use the keywords in the PubMed’s Basic Search box at the top of the PubMed page.

Consider terms from the handout Search Terms for Retrieving Evidence Based Information.

Prioritize concepts Begin with the concept that is central to the question, then use the other concepts to narrow or limit the resulting retrieval. Example: Begin by looking up asthma, then narrow the search by looking for those records which also mention the therapy concept, then narrow by the house mites concept. Finally, limit retrieval to randomized controlled trial OR meta-analysis as a Publication Type (or other evidence based filter terms).

Use connecting terms to construct logical relationships between concepts

The basic connecting terms are AND, OR, and NOT. In PubMED, remember to capitalize all letters of the connecting terms.

Use AND when you want both terms to appear in the database records retrieved with your search. AND narrows the search.

For example, asthma AND mites will retrieve records (article information) with both concepts.

Use OR when you want any one of the terms to appear in the records. OR broadens a search. For example, “randomized controlled trial OR meta-analysis” will retrieve either type of study. Use NOT to retrieve articles which have one concept, but not the second.

Use the NOT connector with caution because it may eliminate some records which would be of value. For example, if you say NOT animal, you will probably eliminate some records which mention both human and animal.

Select the appropriate database(s) for the search

Select database(s) which are likely to contain information relating to your topic of interest. Example: If you have a psychiatric or psychological topic, you might consider running the search in both PubMed (including Medline) and PsycINFO (from the American Psychological Association).

Run the search, evaluate the retrieval, and modify the search as needed.
