Aspectivity March 2017

Hello,

It’s Sunday night after the ALES comp, what a great day. 10 students at training, and 12 starters in ALES, and most rounds had good thermals, although I found it a little harder when the wind came up.

Coming up on the long weekend we have members representing VARMS at the old timer comps in Echuca, the Aero tow at Wangaratta, and the Toy and Hobby show at Sandown. I guess there will be a few at the field as well. You can tell that the best months for flying are about to arrive! And don’t forget “Warbirds over Wantirna” on ANZAC day, and gliders in the afternoon slot (it’s a Tuesday).

We had our committee meeting on Monday 26th Feb, and a few things came up.

We don’t fly on total fire ban days. That’s from midnight to midnight. We have had a few nights when the evenings were really nice, but a rule is a rule. And it’s a rule, not a recommendation.

The Membership Applications have had a further modification. We are going to have a register of members “next of kin”. It will be kept with the defibrillator in the medicine cabinet. Why, you ask? Well when we have a medical incident at the field, we often do not have members details on hand. So the aim is to have emergency details on hand for such an occasion. It will be completely voluntary.

On the First Aid note, the lovely Debbie will be back to give us a refresher course on the defibrillator. She will be looking for a “patient” on the night, please queue near the white board! We are looking for someone to be a VARMS “Garment Rep”; taking orders for garments and procuring them... Queue near the white board please

In October there is a Senior Fest happening. It has been suggested that we participate. Perhaps a come and try day, with some food, and maybe a mini Airshow. We would need a permit for that, so we need to decide soon.

8 new members approved for the month, mostly from training. Good work Trainers... Thanks

It has been over two years since our last Taranis workshop and a number of new Taranis owners have been added to our midst.

At the same time I think a refresher workshop would also be beneficial to existing Taranis owners.

The first in the series will be a refresher covering OpenTx fundamentals and mixing examples.

Follow up sessions will cover a range of topics yet to be finalised.

Attentive date is Friday the 5th of May 2017 followed by the 19th etc.

Registrar P. Zambory spoke of the need for members to fully complete their 2017/2018 membership forms as it had arisen that some members did not have their wings endorsements on the VMAA or MAAA databases. Supper is provided and friendly discussion follows. Attendance fee $3.00 to cover costs. The meeting takes the form of a “show and tell” with members, and others, bringing along their projects to present to the gathering. Also there may be discussion on technical matters related to electric models. There is normally a lot of experience amongst those present, so it is a good time to sort out any problems. Benalla, Victoria 8th – 22nd January 2017

After my return from the Vintage Glider Rally at Bordertown, South Australia, I was determined to attend at least one day of the World Gliding Championships.

I was an active flying member of the Gliding Club of Victoria at Benalla when the last world championships were held in Australia in 1987. Where have the last 30 years gone?

I headed off from home around 8 o’clock on Tuesday the 17th of January and arrived at Benalla too late to sit in on the daily briefing before flying began around 1pm. I was fortunate enough to see the fleet of around 110 sailplanes launched during a time of one hour and 10 minutes.

I managed to find some shade in the about 40 degree heat and witnessed a number of gaggles with around 20 – 25 sailplanes in the one thermal, truly a wonderful sight. The reason I haven’t photographed any individual sailplanes is due to the distance required to walk the vast line ups in the excessive heat, this being beyond my physical ability to do so.

The next 3 – 4 hours were spent in the air-conditioned State Gliding Centre watching the progress of the 3 classes of sailplanes which were shown on large TV screens. These displays allowed us spectators to view the sailplanes progress whilst out on course. With modern technology in gliders we were able to view the gliders position (individual aircraft), current height and average speed etc – truly remarkable.

Around 5:30pm I then ventured outside and for the next 2 hours watched the fleet return from their designated courses. Identifying a sailplanes from some distance was generally easy as a distinctive trail could be seen when the sailplane started to dump its water ballast.

I know that the open class task for this day was 747km, coincidently a 750km task was set for the open class gliders at the World Championships at Benalla in 1987.

In finishing I felt it was worth the day trip and although I have not taken any individual sailplane photos, my memory of this day will be imbedded for some time. I have included a selection of tow plane photos, which I think might be of interest to modelers There were 13 tugs of which 11 were Piper Pawnee types, with the addition of a Callair A-9A and a Transavia PL-12/T300A Airtruck (with looks only a mother could love – Ed)

Geoff is trying to identify the builder/owner of this neat Southern Sailplanes prelude that attended the Aussie Sailplanes II meeting. If you own this model or know who owns it, please let Geoff know.

Aspectivity March 2017

Quite a few pilots turned up for the first ALES event of 2017.

I had about 15 starters at one point, however the wind and the heat soon whittled the numbers down to only 7 flyers. There were those with dodgy servos, yours truly with a sticky rudder and those who took one look at the conditions and (probably wisely) just chickened out.

There were thrills and spills aplenty with repairs between rounds and a bit of mixed up mix unscrambling on Andrew’s Prego. One round was hit with an angry, dusty willy-willy on launch. Colin Collyer demonstrated his excellent reverse parking skills on landing and David Prattley shared a thermal with a rather annoyed Heron. Kevin Fryer showed us all how it was done without the use of black balsa in coming a creditable second to the unstoppable David Prattley - Airmaster Extraordinaire.

A big thank you to the mowing guys who did a beautiful job with the field during the week. Also to the people who helped with timing the rounds with seven pilots. Next event is the Sunday 5th of March.

Aspectivity March 2017

Greetings glider fliers.

Peter Abell was a champion glider flier and a great supporter of the early Sailplane Expos. He was particularly involved in Open Thermal Glider and F3B. I remember one observer watching Peter fly better than everyone else and commenting that he claws his way up the side of a thermal - and he often found them when no-one else did!

Late yesterday afternoon Peter was swimming at Tuckers Rock near Urunga on the north coast of NSW and was caught in a rip and drowned. Peter went to school in Cessnock from 1968 to 1980, so that makes him about 50 years old. His dad, Bruce, is a consummate flier and designer, and also a great supporter of the early Sailplane Expo, and still lives in Cessnock. Bruce asked me to advise the flying community of this tragedy. Bruce lost his wife late last year, and has now lost his son. Please give Bruce every support in this trying time.

Peter made a career as a Horticulturist and worked in the Botanic Gardens in Sydney for over 10 years. Just over a year ago he moved to Bellingen and became a supervisor for the Green Army based in Dorrigo. As such he managed revegetation and maintenance of the walking paths in Dorrigo National Park and New England National Park. He even visited the 2016 Sailplane Expo last year and renewed acquaintances - I did not recognise him at first with his beard! Image attached.

Peter will be missed on flying scenes around the world, even though he has not been very active lately. He leaves behind a wife, Sue, and four children. Our condolences go to them, Bruce and the family.

Please pass this information on to anyone you know in flying circles who had contact with Peter. If anyone has contact with Phil Bird, please let him know. I will give more information as it comes to hand. It was discussed and decided at the last VARMS committee meeting that the club needed to maintain a list of all members with an emergency contact name and phone number against their name. This list to be compiled by the Registrar from the data supplied on your Membership Form and kept in an accessible location in the club house in case there is an emergency. Please think about who your emergency contact would be. The new Member Form for the remainder of 16/17 and for 17/18 has now had this extra entry added at Item 3. This again brings home to us all the importance of running the club in a professional manner with accurate up to date records to cover any situation.

Vale – Peter Abell Peter Pine

This task is designed for you to fly with only a timer and no other assistance.

1. Launch glider to approximately 100 metres altitude using bungee, winch or electric

motor. If using electric launch, then switch off motor.

2. A stopwatch is then started by an adult observer. Fly for 10 minutes. No restarting of the

motor is allowed and the use of a variometer is not allowed.

3. After 10 minutes, land within 30 sec. The nose of the model must finish within a

rectangle 15x4 metres. The 15 m dimension is in line with the wind direction. The

VARMS landing ropes are easiest to use for this.

4. The task is to be completed on 2 different dates. Any number of attempts can be made

to achieve the task. 1, 2 and 3 must all be achieved in the same flight.

5. Complete this form and send it to the VARMS secretary for recording.

The Keyboard

Your frequency key should have your full name written clearly on it so that you can be easily recognised and contacted in case of a frequency clash. Mobile phone number on the key is a good idea too, in case you have departed and left your key in the board thus stopping someone else using that frequency. Members using 2.4 GHz sets should still insert a standard key in the appropriate section of the keyboard.

VARMS (Inc.) was formed in 1968 to get together aero-modelers who were interested in building and flying radio controlled gliders. Members fly at many places, but have a home field, within the Knox Regional Sports Park (South Wantirna) some 60 metres west of the rear of the State Basketball Centre- Entrance off George Street, where Training Classes with dual controlled gliders are held every second Sunday 10-1.00pm. A calendar for training is attached to the flying field gate.

VARMS Training is kindly sponsored by Hyperion Australia.

VARMS organizes regular competitions in both Slope and Thermal Soaring, from fun-fly, scale, open competition and self launching (electric) gliders. General Meetings are held on the SECOND FRIDAY of each month (except January) – at the VARMS Clubroom near State Basketball Centre (as above) and, during daylight saving time there may be limited flying allowed before Meeting starts at 8.00pm. Visitors are welcome. Formalities are usually followed by lively discussions on matters of interest to all modellers followed by a cup of your favourite brew.
