ASEAN University Youth Summit (AUYS) is a meeting program of ASEAN students, youth and young professionals as a platform to exchange ideas, to plan collaborative action, networking and to build a common understanding about ASEAN Community (AC). The ASEAN Community brought the ten members of the South-east Asia nations even closer together, as it is bounded by the shared vision of a durable, peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Community-

building has three pillars - in the political-security, economic and sociocultural areas. The establishment of a community is a significant milestone in ASEAN’s continued evolution as an association with a common regional identity, one that is home to some 620 million people aspiring for “One Vision, One Identity, One Community.” The AUYS had its inaugural summit in 2015 held at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) with a theme “Forging 1-ASEAN Youth Network through Volunteerism”. The first summit were attended by 200 participants from ten ASEAN countries. Universitas Teknologi Sumbawa (UTS), Indonesia was then appointed as the host for the 2nd AUYS in 2016. Bringing the spirit of ASEAN integration, UTS managed the AUYS 2016 with a theme “Social Entrepreneurship as a Main Character of Future ASEAN Generation”. In 2017, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, the Philippines was unanimously chosen to host the Summit in coinciding with the 2017 Chairmanship of Philippines in the ASEAN Summit. The theme of the summit was “ASEAN Youth: Advocate of Environmental Sustainability,” focusing on the state of the environment in ASEAN and its biodiversity, the issue and challenges of climate change, and capacity building on youth engagement and environmental education. Thailand was chosen to become the host for AUYS 2018 and this responsibility was taken by the Thaksin University. With the theme “Sustainable Development”, the summit was attended by 30 participants from 17 – 20 September 2018. The AUYS 2019 returns to Universiti Utara Malaysia and will take place from 24 to 27 August 2019, with support from the Passage to ASEAN (P2A). The AUYS 2019 targeted 200 participants from the region to join the event for learning, networking and fun alongside the Asian most inspiring youth. The objective of the AUYS 2019 is to facilitate dialogue and cooperation across Southeast Asian region youth community with the theme of “Social Media Generation: Unleashing Youth Potential”. The summit is designed to encourage social interaction and networking in a cross-cultural learning environment by means of interrelated activities such as Roundtable Discussion, Community Engagement Program, ASEAN Cultural Showcase and Gala Dinner. About

    Universiti Utara Malaysia

    Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM),

which was officially established on 16

February 1984, is the sixth Malaysian

public university. It is the only

university that was set up to

    specialise solely in management

education from the very beginning of

    its establishment.

UUM has evolved into an open campus where outsiders and tourists are allowed the freedom to visit and utilise the various amenities within it. An area encompassing 107 hectares of forest has been developed into various facilities both to attract tourists to the northern region and to satisfy the recreational needs of the members of the campus community. Among these facilities are a picnic area, a nine-hole golf course, a go-kart circuit, a shooting and archery range, an equestrian site, and many others that are fast gaining popularity among tourists and the members of the campus community alike.

In January 2008, a restructuring of the university academic system was undertaken with the express purpose of preparing a strong structure that would enable the increase in the number of postgraduate students and the hoisting of the UUM flag in the international academic arena. The university sees the need to be global in practice and content since the knowledge it generates and purveys transcends and extends far beyond the borders of Malaysia. In this restructuring exercise, 13 faculties were merged and streamed into 3 main Academic Colleges, namely UUM COB (UUM College of Business), UUM CAS (UUM College of Arts and Sciences), and UUM COLGIS (UUM College of Law, Government and International Studies)
