“Architecture is involved with the world, but at the same time it has a certain autonomy. This autonomy cannot be explained in terms of traditional logic because the most interesting parts of the work are non-verbal. They operate within the terms of the work, like any art.” -Thom Mayne

“I would like my architecture to inspire people to use their own resources, to move into the future.” -Tadao Ando

The following is a sample of the work that I have completed while enrolled at Drury University. During my time at Drury, I found that architecture, erected simultaneously as an art form and as a tool for living, is of the greatest manifestations of the human spirit and its achievments. Great architecture starts with a collaborative relationship between the architect, the client, and one’s colleagues, and is executed by a series of responsible, educated decisions, carried by the architect’s artistic and professional integrity and driven by passion.

Institute for Sustainable Consumption

In an era of fast pace consumption we face the ever growing issue of waste and the tole that it takes on our environment and society. Adaptive re-use is one approach architects may take to combat this inherent flaw within our consumer based culture. Four large industrial structures known as gasometers were built in St Louis in the early 1900’s. As this system for storing gas has become obsolete, three of the four have been demolished within the past 6 years. This project proposes that the fourth and only remaining gasometer be repurposed into an institute for sustainable consumption, with focused education on waste management, alternative energy, food and agriculture, and sustainable design. The site in north St Louis is adjacent to a yard of abandoned shipping containers, which will be used in the construction of the classrooms of the building. This project is meant to act as a model for sustainable design and sustainable consumption, while concurrently preserving an industrial monument.

Center For SustainabilityHammons School of Architecture Addition

The Center for Sustainability addition to the Hammon’s School of Architecture is meant to implement sustainable methods of design while producing a quality learning environment sensitive to and expressive of the art of architecture. There are three main components to the addition: Sustainable studies studio, theater/lecture hall, and community studio space. The need for optimal natural lighting and other energy saving methods dictated much of what the building would look like, how it would be structured, and how students would interact with it. The flexible, expressive tectonics of the laminated wood structure played a large role in achieving optimal lighting, and variably shaping the building.

Kansas City Performing Arts CenterMusic Conservatory

The Performing Arts Center in Kansas City is located on the lawn in front of the Nelson-Atkins Museum. The lawn as it exists, while not within the museum’s property lines, belongs to the museum, as it is a visual and physical extension of the formal approach to the Nelson-Atkins Museum. Instead of disrupting this connection, I chose to bury the perfoming arts buildings on either side of this existing visual corridor, maintaining the use of a lawn between the buildings and strengthening the connection to the museum. The Music Conservatory was designed to emphasize the layers which come together when composing music, a phenomenon synonomous with architecture.

Live/Work Art Gallery

The Live/Work Art Pavilion on Chase st in Springfield, MO contains a gallery space that is open to the public, a classroom, two artist studio spaces, and a third studio for the residing artist. The neighboring train tracks mark a historic landmark for Springfield and was an inspiration for the design of this pavilion. This building expresses the joining of destinations and the connections formed between them. This is shown through the building’s unique interlocking forms and interior cuppling structure.

Breaking Camp On a theoretical site with a grade of 1 to 3, the project was to create a karate camp for children ages 8-12. The only requirement was to provide a covered space to perform and train. The art of karate suggests a process, one of several levels and stages of learning. I felt this process would be appropriate to simulate through the approach to the training area. Concurrently, in simply dealing with the sloped site, I created this process with a winding staircase that lead to the top with stops along the way. The sound of trickling water engages and drives one to climb further. Once at the top, one finds water slowly falling into a reflecting pool which directs one’s view out over the tree tops that they’ve climbed above. Here they may contemplate and reflect upon their journey. One may then proceed into the training room to begin.
