SEAFOOD & STEAKHOUSE ~ since 1920 ~ Maisie’s was built in 1920 by Pattermore and Cash for Jiddy Massoud. The Massoud family ran it as a café – the first in the district. Jiddy’s daughter, Maisie, worked for her parents’ café as a chef/cook and waited on the tables at “The Favourite” as the café was then known. Jiddy Massoud continued to run the café through the Depression and World War II, when it became a favourite eating place for the troops stationed in the area, especially the 2/14 Battalion. It was also the first drive-in café, as the troops would drive the amphibious Army Ducks out of the river and up to the café to collect their food, which was cooked on a small wood stove. Throughout this period the Massouds would cook from six to eight cases of fish a day, each case weighing 60lb and because the stove was fueled by wood the café would fill up with smoke so the locals started to call the café Smokey Joe’s. War rationing didn’t really affect the cafe operation, because if they ran out of something the troops would get it for Jiddy. In return the Massoud family would entertain the troops by moving the pianola out onto Gympie Terrace itself. Maisie recalls that right throughout this time not so much as a teaspoon went missing and that “if people had money they would pay for their meals – if they didn’t the food could be free. How times have changed!” 20 years ago the restaurant was named after Maisie honour. She used to regularly dine here and have oysters for entrée, main and dessert. Sadly, Maisie passed away on 21st May, 2005. She is missed greatly by those who knew her. The staff and management welcome you to Maisie’s and hope you enjoy our food, service and history. SEAFOOD & STEAKHOUSE~ since 1920 ~

Maisie’s was built in 1920 by Pattermore and Cash for Jiddy Massoud. The Massoud

family ran it as a café – the first in the distric

t. Jiddy’s daughter, Maisie, worked for

her parents’ café as a chef/cook and waited on the tables at “The Favourite” as the

café was then known.

Jiddy Massoud continued to run the café through the Depression and World War

II, when it became a favourite eating place for the troops sta

tioned in the area,

especially the 2/14 Battalion. It was also the first drive-in café, as the troops would

drive the amphibious Army Ducks out of the river and up to the café to collect

their food, which was cooked on a small wood stove. Throughout this period the

Massouds would cook from six to eight cases of fish a day, each case weighing 60lb

and because the stove was fueled by wood the café would fill up with smoke so the

locals started to call the café Smokey Joe’s.

War rationing didn’t really affect the cafe operation, because if they ran out of

something the troops would get it for Jiddy. In return the Massoud family would

entertain the troops by moving the pianola out onto Gympie Terrace itself. Maisie

recalls that right throughout this tim

e not so much as a teaspoon went missing and

that “if people had money they would pay for their meals – if they didn’t the food

could be free. How times have changed!”

20 years ago the restaurant was named after Maisie honour. She used to regularly

dine here and have oysters for entrée, main and dessert.

Sadly, Maisie passed away on 21st May, 2005. She is m

issed greatly by those who

knew her.

The staff and management welcome you to Maisie’s and hope you enjoy our food,

service and history.
