VISION

Sea to Sea to Sea (SEA3) represents a profound signature initiative for Canada 150 that

will inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation for Canada and its people, and

connect Canadians of all ages from all corners of our great country along with millions

more around the world. The centerpiece of the SEA3 Program is a five-month ship-

based expedition from Toronto to Vancouver, via the Northwest Passage.

Page 6: SEA TO SEA TO SEA - Natural History Museumsnaturalhistorymuseums.ca/documents/canada-150sea3...1 The SEA3 Expedition may also go West to East – from Vancouver to Toronto, following

SEA TO SEA TO SEAAn Epic Journey to Celebrate & Connect Canada and Canadians 2

SEA3 will be a journey of discovery and celebration that will showcase our country’s three oceans and coasts,

communities, cultures, conservation, sovereignty, history, challenges, opportunities and future. Exceptional Canadians,

key stakeholders, youth, artists, elders, educators, musicians, scientists, leaders and media will participate in the

celebratory journey that will visit many of the most beautiful, remote and important parts of our country from Sea to

Sea to Sea.

The SEA3 Program will be a unique and exciting platform to showcase that we are a great nation connected by three

oceans – Pacific, Arctic, Atlantic – that boasts the largest coastline in the World. Canada proudly identifies itself as an

Ocean Nation, a Water Nation, and a great Polar Nation amongst many other wonderful things. Exploring our coastline,

SEA3 will visit historical, cultural and economically significant sites that illuminate many of the great characteristics and

achievements of Canada that have shaped our identity in the past, the present and will continue to do so in the future.

SEA3 will fulfill the need of Canadians to understand a vital part of their country, identity and future – the North.

SEA3 involves a broad range of partners and supporters. It will be a crossroads for ideas and people. It will be an

exciting and important “gathering place” for many Canada 2017 events, activities and partners. A venue for bringing

together key stakeholders to collaborate, share, get to know each other, build partnerships, and inspire and engage

Canadians.

The culmination of the Sea to Sea to Sea Canada 150 Program with the Government of Canada and the Governor

General of Canada can be the revealing of our updated Coat of Arms and National Motto – A Mari usque ad Mare

usque ad Mare.

SEA3 will be a catalytic, celebrative and transformative journey for all Canadians. A journey that will spark

and captivate the imagination of our Nation and lead to a greater awareness and deeper understanding

of country, its vastness, beauty, and the enormity of opportunities ahead of us. SEA3 will instil a lasting

sense of pride and inspire the next generation of Canadians to make their contributions to Canada’s

long list of great achievements.”

SEA TO SEA TO SEA “ROAD MAP”

The SEA3 “Road Map” consists of three phases:

1 The SEA3 Road to 2017

Beginning in early 2016, Canadians will be involved in the planning and preparations for SEA3, and Canada 2017

related events across the country. The Students on Ice (SOI) Foundation and its SEA3 partners will prepare

and execute a national launch of the SEA3 program that will generate nation-wide awareness of the program.

Subsequently, the SOI Foundation and its program partners will run a national, multi-faceted expedition planning

for the SEA3 Expedition, engaging Canadians from coast to coast to coast and creating nation-wide excitement in

the lead-up to 2017.

2 SEA3 in 2017

SEA3 activities will take place for 365 days beginning on January 1st, 2017, including the five-month expedition from

May to October 2017. The SEA3 Expedition will be at the heart of an exciting program that will also encompass

partner-led projects, including the SOI Foundation’s Canada 150 Youth Expedition, organized in collaboration with

the Community Foundations of Canada.

A comprehensive outreach and education component will complement the Canada 150 communication plans to

help reach as many Canadians as possible, starting in 2016 and accelerating throughout the entirety of 2017.

3 The Next 150 – Legacy projects and actions will be integrated into the SEA3 plan in collaboration with the

participating partners. Examples of such legacy projects are:

a) A Vision for the next 150 years of Canada: This vision will be developed during the SEA3 Expedition by the

expedition participants; the crew of each leg will contribute to the vision and participants in past legs can keep

contributing through the program’s interactive web- and social media sites. The vision will be further refined

during the homecoming event and published before the end of 2017.

b) A feature documentary will be made of the entire SEA3 Expedition. This feature documentary will be released

nationally through partner-hosted events.

c) An online SEA3 Arts Exhibit, showcasing the artworks created by participating artists as inspired by their

participation and communicating messages of beauty, pride and hope.

d) Online curriculum compatible educational modules following the five SEA3 education and outreach themes.

Elementary and high school teachers will be able to use these educational modules in their lesson plans for

years to come.

The most significant legacy of the SEA3 Program however, will be a deeper understanding of and appreciation

for Canada’s achievements, history, Peoples, cultures, lands, eco-systems, vastness and indescribable beauty among

Canadians from Coast to Coast to Coast. This legacy will help build Canada’s foundation for success in the next

150 years.

1 Musician

17 Total

Celebrated Canadians that will be invited to join legs of the expedition will include: Chris Hadfield, Diana Krall, Kevin

Vickers, Governor General David Johnston, Leonard Cohen, Romeo Dallaire, Jordan Tootoo, Julie Payette, Steve Nash,

Martin Short, Elon Musk, Susan Aglukark amongst others.

During the expedition participants will develop their Dream for the next 150 years of Canada. They will be encouraged

and enabled to do this in various formats, including but not limited to writing, visual arts and music.

Supported by the expedition vessel’s onboard studio, the SEA3 interactive web site and social media the expedition

members will keep Canadians from coast to coast to coast updated through video footage, photos, podcasts, media

interviews, video conferences and blogs shared daily by the expedition members and promoted through all involved

SEA3 partners.

Research shows that Canadians consider the Arctic to be an important part of Canada and want to know more about

it3. SEA3 and its partners will meet this public need.

3 An Angus Reid poll in August 2008 confirmed that 74% of Canadians believe Canada should invest heavily on securing sovereignty over its Arctic territory. The IPSOS Reid 2009 North Pole Survey said that while 31% of Canadians are not generally aware of the realities of Canada’s Arctic, 74% of Canadians would like to learn more about the Inuit people and culture.

ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP OF SEA3

The SEA3 Program will be led by the Students on Ice Foundation, an award-winning registered charitable organization

in Canada. This organization based in Ottawa-Gatineau is the ideal organization to lead the SEA3 Program.

STUDENTS ON ICE FOUNDATION

Since 1999, Students on Ice (SOI) is a respected Canadian and global leader and pioneer in education and expeditions.

The award-winning organization has taken 2,500 students, teachers, scientists, elders, artists and leaders to the Arctic

and Antarctic on more than 30 educational expeditions and has been involved in many other national and international

outreach and education initiatives.

The SOI Foundation has significant experience developing and leading national level programs, such as the 2014

Expedition Arctic virtual museum website, developed in collaboration with CMN, the 2012 Polar Educators Workshop as

part of the International Polar Year Conference in Montreal and the 2008 Polar Perspectives Speakers Series and Youth

Forums.

In the period 2002-2004 the SOI Foundation was part owner of the Sedna IV and used the vessel several times for its

educational expeditions. Since 2009 the SOI Foundation owns and operates its own polar expedition sailing vessel,

the Arctic Tern I, which successfully completed the 4 month “Sailing to Siku” Arctic Expedition in collaboration with the

World Wildlife Fund.

Since its inception, the SOI Foundation has established significant and strong partnerships across the country with

the Federal Government of Canada, Provincial and Territorial Governments, the Education sector, leading non-profit

organizations, foundations and the private sector.

The SOI Foundation is supported by a high-profile Board of Advisors, chaired by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and

including Dr. Don Walsh, Dr. Fred Roots, Mr. Peter Mansbridge and Ms. Eira Thomas amongst its members.

TESTIMONIALS AND ENDORSEMENTS

“We congratulate Students on Ice on 15 years of inspiring young people about the environment and the Polar Regions.

Our partnership benefits both of our organisations, and we will continue to share our expertise with SOI through hand-

on discovery and interpretation of the diversity of our polar regions.”

Meg Beckel, Executive Director of the Canadian Museum of Nature

“It’s with pleasure that the Makivik Corporation partners with the great work of the Students On Ice Foundation. I can’t

think of a more rewarding way of spending time out on the land and sea and absorbing the wealth of information the

adventure brings with it for our young people. “

Jobie Tukkiapik, President of Makivik

“Students on Ice Arctic Expedition offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for youth, from both the north and south, to

become engaged in the discussion and decisions about the future of the Arctic. What better place to do it than on a

journey through the Arctic? Will we continue to react to events as they unfold, or will we be leaders in the race to chart

the region’s economic, environmental and cultural future?”

Ed Struzik, Award-winning Arctic journalist and author

“Over the past 15 years, Students on Ice has benefited the Arctic, its people, and youth worldwide in profound and

unique ways. SOI reminds each of us that we need to get involved for the sake of our planet.”

H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, Honorary Chair of the Students on Ice Foundation

“Students on Ice is an outstanding educational program. Just one of their shipboard expeditions to the Polar Regions

equals two or three academic courses in a traditional university setting. The Arctic and Antarctic are where major

changes in our global environment are first being seen. I am proud and honoured to participate in this unique

shipboard program.”
