Travel TipsEXCHANGE YOUR VOUCHER FOR THE JAPAN RAIL PASS

All the major stations in Japan and Tokyo in particular have a dedicated Japan Rail Pass ticket office (please refer to the QR code for the complete list). Once you have activated your Japan Rail Pass, show it to the gate staff then follow the bilingual signs to access the platform.

http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en009.html

FIND YOUR TRAINYou can board any shinkansen (except the Nozomi or the Mizuho), express, rapid and local trains from the Japan Rail network, including Narita express, Tokyo monorail (from Haneda airport) and the Yamanote line.

AND THE RIGHT CAROn many platforms, floor markings indicate where the train doors will open. Just look for the “jiyuseki 自由席 / non-reserved seat” sign to find the right car. If you have any questions, feel free to ask the JR agent.

WAIT FOR YOUR TRAIN Choose a line (generally indicated by floor markings), and patiently wait behind the other passengers until you can board the car.

AVOIDING RUSH HOURS Peak times in Japan are between 7 am and 9 am and 5 pm and 7 pm. If you want to find a seat, avoid overcrowded trains, especially if you are traveling with large items.

WHEN TO BOOK A SEAT ? If you hold an Ordinary Japan Rail Pass, you don’t need to reserve a seat to board a shinkansen, but you can do so at no extra cost. However, during rush hours and the peak season*, you are strongly advised to book. Only the Hayabusa, Komachi and Hayate shinkansen are reservation-only trains. Narita Express is also reservation only.Green car seats also require reservations.

TRANSPORT AND STORE YOUR LUGGAGE Japanese trains do not provide much space for large suitcases, but most stations offer lockers. For a more comfortable trip, you can also use the luggage delivery service or “Takkyu-bin“.

ENJOY THE VIEW All long-distance trains have comfortable reclining seats that can be turned round by 180°; as well as always facing forwards, you will be able to travel in a group easily by forming “squares“. For the best experience, sit on the left on the Kyoto-Kanazawa and Kyoto-Tokyo routes. This will give you the best views of Lake Biwa and Mount Fuji.

EAT ON BOARD Never go hungry on a Japanese train: try an ekiben, a special bento box sold in most stations, and taste regional flavors as you travel across Japan. If you haven’t had time to buy a bento, there is a regular trolley service in the cars. Traveling by train with the Japan Rail Pass.
