What is the ultimate reason to own a yacht? The freedom to explore the world in total luxury.

Matthias Bosse - Project founder and Master Mariner

We set out to create a yacht for those who want to explore further, a vessel that would not only be at home in the luxury marinas of St Tropez and Monaco, but that could travel to the most challenging areas in the world.

Most expedition yachts specialise in travelling to one particular environment. Typically austere at the expense of luxury, they are often neither seaworthy nor suitable for long range cruising. We wanted to create a true blue water vessel that could travel to both extremes, from the icy waters of the Polar Regions to the hot and silty waters of the Amazon.

To create a vessel with both expedition capabilities and exceptional luxury required a focus on beautiful but functional design, one that incorporated speed, strength and efficiency, as well as large interior spaces for luxury features.

The idea for Sea Hawk was born, a superyacht that could provide true exploration in total comfort, safety and luxury.

Connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Northwest Passage is the gateway to the Arctic Circle.

Navigating a ship through these waters is notoriously difficult. Even in the summer months there is the chance of encountering pack ice, which means that all vessels need to be adapted to cold environments and have a Polar Class rating to enter.

Being able to meet this requirement allows you to see the truly unspoilt landscapes of glaciers and fjords, as well as explore the historical sites of past expeditions.

ICE FRIENDLy HULL SHAPE

The hull is designed for safe navigation in polar waters, pushing through smaller pieces of ice or breaking through thicker ice.

REINFORCED ICE BELT

The hull has thicker plates and narrower frame spacing at the bow and around the waterline, which protects the hull from ice interaction.

ExPEDITION STyLE SEA CHESTS

In the Polar Regions there is a chance of ice and slush entering sea chests and inlets, which can block seawater flow to the ship's systems. To avoid this, compressed air and steam may be introduced to clear the ice and slush.

HEATED SHELL DOOR SEALS

Heated seals avoid the chance of door seals freezing in cold climates.

HIGHLy MANOEUVRABLE

Our yachts are designed with Becker rudders and strong side thrusters for efficient operation and manoeuvrability. Extendable azimuthing propellers also provide extra manoeuvrability and dynamic positioning.

OVERSIzED PROPELLERS AND MACHINERy

All yacht machinery has been developed to meet the requirements of ice interaction and polar expeditions.

HIGH-POWER BOILER FOR COLD ENVIRONMENTS

To operate comfortably in cold climates our yachts are designed with high-power boilers and heating systems.

DESIGNED FOR ICE ACCRETION

Sea Hawk is designed to be stable with up to 100 tons of ice accretion.

ExPEDITION SIDE GATES

The expedition gates provide separate areas to prepare for expeditions, and ensure that guests can disembark for landing and moving on to the supporting tenders safely. The tenders are designed to cope with extreme conditions, with covered tops for travelling in cold climates, a cabin and interior seating for comfortable travel.

Breaking the iceWith a Polar Class 6 rating, Sea Hawk has a strengthened hull that can break through 80 cm of medium first year ice with old ice inclusions, giving exceptional access to the unspoilt and majestic scenery of the Polar Regions.

Beautiful design in practice

The innovative Hawk Bow shape seamlessly combines beauty and functionality. It encloses the forecastle at the front of the ship, protecting systems that can get damaged or worn in heavy seas. Effectively 1.5 decks higher than a traditional bow, the shape is designed to break and throw aside large waves instead of scooping them up. This makes for more comfortable and efficient sailing through heavy seas.

The hull is designed for smooth and economic sailing in a wide range of conditions. It has large bilge keels and retractable fin stabilisers for efficient and steady sailing, and an ice friendly shape, so it can push through up to 80 cm of ice.

The Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world, sprawling across nine countries and covering 1.4 billion acres of land. This vast expanse is home to rich cultures, beautiful scenery and unique biodiversity, with around 10% of the world's animal and plant species having been found there.

Interweaving through the forest is the Amazon River, one of the longest in the world. A large yacht can use the river to travel around 2,000 nm into the rainforest. With water temperatures reaching up to 36°C, this can put ship's engines at risk of overheating, and silty water can block the ship's systems.

Overcoming these issues allows you to truly absorb the extraordinary atmosphere of this tropical forest.

EFFECTIVE COOLING CAPACITy

Water temperatures in the Amazon can reach up to 36°C, putting a strain on ship systems. The oversized cooling system keeps engines from overheating whilst travelling in hot waters.

OVERSIzED AIR CONDITIONING SySTEMS

Air-conditioning will be installed that is capable of dealing with extremely high temperatures, humidity and condensate.

INSECT FILTERS AND POLLEN BARRIERS

At sunset in tropical regions there may be large numbers of insects in the air. Accessible filters will be installed so that insect blockages in air conditioning filters can be cleaned easily.

FRESHWATER PRODUCTION

Easily accessible filters systems and brackish-water permeators for reverse osmosis freshwater production will be installed.

MAINTENANCE FRIENDLy WATER INTAkES

River water is often silty, increasing the likelihood of blockages in the engine cooling systems. Our systems are easily accessed for cleaning in such conditions.

OVERSIzED PROPELLERS AND MACHINERy

Sea Hawk's machinery and systems are engineered to withstand interactions with floating logs and debris in tropical waters.

Sail beyond the seaNot only is Sea Hawk able to withstand polar climates, it is equally capable in tropical climates, with the ability to travel through warm waters and up silty rivers, opening up the wonders of this unique but challenging environment.

Yacht expedition is not about going rough, it’s about access to the memorable exclusivity of unspoilt nature in comfort, safety and style.

THE CALM BEFORE THE ICE

The whole power of the Arctic and the Antarctic is really quite incredible, and that's what takes me back. I've been going into the ice every year for 45 years, but it still gives you an incredible thrill when you encounter your first bit of ice at the top end of the Antarctic Peninsula. When you've had a rough crossing from South America and you're wondering when it will happen, then everything goes calm and you are confronted with a sheet of white.

Suddenly the ship goes into the ice and it is growling along the side of the hull and shuddering in the harder pieces of ice. It's a moment when the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, and you just think ‘wow, this is what it's all about’. No matter how many times you see it or feel it, the excitement is still there.

A specialist vessel that is ice strengthened and well prepared with good crew and good officers can enter the ice and actually get to

the heart of the Antarctic, but of course there is also the doubt in your mind, are we going to get through, are there bands of ice that are too thick or too heavy for us to access?

For me, it's about going into the Antarctic and the Arctic and beginning to take on nature and the ice. Getting close to icebergs, which are an awe inspiring presence, and seeing amazing wildlife not only survive, but thrive in the most hostile environment on Earth.

It's that feeling of going back to the Antarctic every year and it not just being another page in a book, but an incredible new experience every time. you have a chance to see a part of the world that is completely untouched, the last pristine wilderness on earth. I know many people who at the end of the day simply cry because they are overwhelmed by this amazing view of nature that they can so rarely see.

Antarctica is an area of outstanding beauty located at the base of the Southern hemisphere. Its diverse wildlife—including penguins, leopard seals and sea lions—live amongst towering mountains of ice. As an ecologically protected area, vessels that wish to travel through Antarctica have to abide by ecological restrictions. Being able to meet these requirements gives a rare chance to explore one of the most exceptional and isolated environments in the world.
