Logistics is more than just transportation – logistics plays one of the most important roles in the world

globalization process. The management of complex projects demonstrates the variety of logistics options.

The language of sea freight – An overview of the most important terms

AMS / ACI / SMD Automated Manifest System (for USA) / Advance Commercial Information (for Canada). All customs-related information must be submitted to customs at a specific time before departure.

BAF / BUC / IFP Bunker Adjustment Factor = surcharge / reduction on sea freight rate representing adjustments made for oil price –either a set amount per TEU or a percentage. In theory, this can be a surcharge or a reduction, however in mostcases it is a surcharge

Barge Lighter, inland waterway vessel or ship for short distances

B / L Bill of Lading

Break Bulk Shipping does not take place in containers. Shipping takes place on conventional or RO / RO vessels

CAD Cash Against Documents type of payment method, simplified letter of credit but not as secure as a letter of credit

CAF Currency Adjustment Factor = surcharge / reduction on sea freight rate representing an exchange rate adjustment, mostly as a percentage, can be a surcharge or a reduction

CFS / CY Container Freight Station = container loading / unloading station / Container Yard = delivery / reception point for containers

C.O.D. Cash on delivery

Compulsory prepayment In certain regions, shipping lines will only carry goods on prepayment of freight at the port of loading / departure airport

Congestion Surcharge Surcharge on sea freight rates for demurrage in ports that arises due to congestion, generally a set amount per TEU or W/M

CSC Container Service Charge, see also THC

Customs entry / Customs declaration where the data is visible (customs and taxes) / customs clearanceCustoms clearance

Demurrage / Detention Fee for containers while at port awaiting collection / Fee for delays in return of container

ETS / ETD / ETA Estimated time of sailing/departure, estimated time of arrival

EUST / VAT Import sales tax / value added tax

FCL / FCL Full Container Load = a container sent from one shipper to one consignee

FCL / LCL One shipper but several consignees, the container will be stripped at the CFS of the port of discharge / destination airport

Feeder service Service between minor / smaller ports and major / larger ports

f.i.o. Free in and out = full liner terms – stuffing and stripping included in the sea freight rate, this applies to most regions (does not apply to CSC and THC)

Fiscal representation Within the context of pre-tax deductions, the tax office offsets the import sales tax paid against the invoiced VATthus creating a zero balance, i.e. no import sales tax has to be paid

Page 7: SEA FREIGHT IN A GLOBAL MARKET - Rhenus Logistics · 2012-11-26 · FCL / FCL Full Container Load = a container sent from one shipper to one consignee ... Containerised and palleted

Freight prepaid / collect Freight has already been paid at the port of loading / origin airport /Freight will be paid at the port of discharge / destination airport

Full set Full set of B / Ls, generally 3 original copies

G / A General Average

I.C.C. Institute Cargo Clauses = general insurance terms for goods transport

IMDG / GGVSee International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code, regulates the transportation of dangerous goods on ocean vessels

IMO International Maritime Organization

In bond / bonded transport Goods not yet cleared and therefore under customs bond / Goods in bond, not yet cleared by customs

ISPS International Ship and Port Security Charge

L / C Letter of Credit

LCL / FCL Less than Container Load = groupage consignment being shipped from CFS to CFS

LCL / LCL Several shippers but one consignee – container is loaded at the CFS of the departure country or the port of loading and is directly delivered to the door of the consignee

LSFS Low Sulfur Fuel Surcharge – A fee is charged for low-sulfur fuel (e.g. North Sea environmental protection zone).May be included in the Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF), depending on the shipping route.

M / G (W / M) Chargeable weight = measurement or weight, freight rates per 1,000 kg or per 1.000 m3 per item –

i.e. the shipping line has the right to charge at the higher amount

actual weight freight tons = chargeable weight

1 crate 200 x 200 x 200 cm 8.000 m3 5,000 kg 8.000

1 crate 300 x 100 x 100 cm 3.000 m3 5,000 kg 5.000

1 pallet 120 x 100 x 100 cm 1.200 m3 500 kg 1.200
