    Camera

The use of a Close Up Shot

    suggests the proximity of thekiller.

The Close Ups creates a contrastwith the anonymity creating anenigma as the atmosphere of

mystery enables the viewer topursue the film.

    The Extreme Close Ups highlight

the planned work and theintricate detail. The evidence ofmethodical strategy constructs a

representation of the killerallowing the viewers to becomealigned with the killer and theprocesses used, creating not only

    Editing

The fade from black to white

indicates a merge of reality between

    the physical and literary world.

The Jump Cuts quicken the pace and

heighten the tension and curiosity of

the audience as the images are

appearing too quickly to identifyclearly what is taking place on screen.

The Justified Cut of the scraping of

the fingertips to the fingertips with

    badges highlight the killers methodical

process and accentuate the need forno traces to be left, serving as an

answer as to why later on in the film

there are no fingerprints on the crime

    scenes.

    Typography

The font used in this openingsequence is Cursive- a

    computerised hand written font.

    The writing looks handwritten yet

it is disjointed and irregular. The

    effect of the scratched and

    imperfect writing accompanied by

    the black background could be

interpreted as a reflection of the

    killers disturbed mental state.

    The leading isnt uniform which

    conveys the scattered pattern of

    the killers psychopathic thought

    process and mental instability of

    his mind.

    Mise-en-scene

The everyday tools gives of anunsettling atmosphere becausewe are focusing on the sharpedges and we can see thatalthough they are typical objects, they could be dangerous whenused in certain ways.

The flickers of rough writing andbible passages make it clear thatthe man in the sequence isslightly unhinged. The use of thebible passages makes it moreobvious that this man is using thebible in some way, due to the waywe see the set ups in thatbackground it is clear that theBible is not being used well.

    Mise-en-scene

It isnt only the simple objectsthat are unsettling, there areimages of people who are clearlydead and these images are inwhat seems to be a scrapbook, this adds to the unease of the

    whole scene.

Another piece of the mise-en-scene that added to theatmosphere of fear in thesequence is the bandages on themans fingers. These bandages

connote the blood that makes theplasters necessary, the thought ofblood is slightly unsettling eventhough we cannot see it.

    Sound

The screams are non diegeticsounds which create a feeling of

    discomfort. It makes it

    discordant.

    The monochromatic visuals are

contrapuntal to the music, whichhas a low beat which builds

    tension and the feeling of

    mystery.

The tempo increases as well as

the pitch. This is reflective of thekiller and shows us that the killer

    is becoming erratic.
