Total energy consumption in Ameri-can houses has remained fairly

stable. In the United States the in-crease in domestic energy efficiency,in fact, has continuously compensa-ted for new homes and their media

dimensions. This is the data providedby the recent report of the ResidentialEnergy Consumption Survey. An average American family consu-mes 90 million British Thermal Units(BTU), as verified by the study with re-

10

american virtue

SE 4-2013 english:Smart Energy 13/03/13 09:07 Page 10

Page 11: SE-Smart Energy n.4/2013 english version

ference to the year 2011. This datumindicates a new tendency toward acontinuous decrease in residentialenergy consumption, which beganabout 30 years ago. The reason for this more virtuousshift by the American people seemsto derive from higher attention to themore conscientious use of heating, resulting in new techniques in theconstruction of homes and especiallythe significant evolution of air condi-tioners. Americans are paying particu-lar attention to insulation of windowsand walls, despite the fact that woodis often chosen as the constructionmaterial.Renewable resources have taken on adetermining role, as can be noted inthe architectural solution on the adja-

cent page, where the photovoltaic pa-nels are perfectly integrated with thedesign of the building.Obviously not all of the States of theUnion have begun to act with thesame attention to the demand for im-provements in domestic energy effi-ciency. Probably this occurs also as aresult of geographic position within avast and climactically diverse territory. For example, the average energy ex-penditure for a New Jersey family is3,065 dollars per year, more thantwice that calculated for an averageCalifornian family. The statistical data recently providedby RECS cover a very broad dimen-sion of samples, in order to providevery detailed information that comesas close as possible to describing rea-lity. Soon new revelations are expec-ted to be published related to energycosts as well, subdivided according totype of fuel and system used. This is certainly a type of study thatcould be useful also to us in Europeand that, in any case, comforts usabout the fact that America, long con-sidered one of the continents thatpollutes most in the world , has beenmoving towards respect or nature forsome time regarding energy supply.Unfortunately the study considersonly the domestic market, while in in-dustry we are still quite far from con-siderable results. However, we are onthe right track.

11

despite the constantly increasing numberof homes in the USA, American net energy consumption is falling, thanks tothe use of renewable resources and new technologies

exteriors of already existent buildings(insulation of walls and roofs, repla-cing windows and installing solarscreens) and the replacement of exi-sting space heating systems withmore efficient ones (such as condensing boilers) and thereplacement or, in some cases, the in-stallation of new renewable energysources (heat pumps, boilers, stovesand biomass fireplaces, solar thermalsystems also combined with solarcooling technologies). In addition, thenew decree introduces specific incen-tives for Energy Diagnosis and EnergyCertification, when combined, in cer-tain conditions, with the actions citedabove. The incentive is identified based onthe type of action as a function of theincrease in energy efficiency achieva-ble with the improvement in theenergy performance of the buildingand/or function of the energy thatcan be produced by plants using re-newable sources. The incentive is acontribution to the costs sustainedand will be provided in the form ofannual installments over a variableduration (between 2 and 5 years) as afunction of the actions completed. SE already published an article in thelast issue of December, but it is wor-thwhile to return to this topic, espe-cially considering the numerousrequests for clarifications that the edi-tor has received. The incentivizing mechanism is divi-ded into two types:-Public administration-Private parties, including individuals, apartment buildings, and holders ofbusiness or agricultural income. To consider this on a more practicallevel, let’s examine the small actionsrelated to thermal energy productionplants from renewable energy sour-ces and high efficiency systems. Here is the list:a) Replacement of existing winterheating plants with ones that run onheat pumps, natural gas, or electricity,

using aero thermal, geothermal, orhydrothermal energy.b) Replacement of winter heatingor heating systems for greenhousesand existing rural buildings with win-ter heating plants running on bio-mass heat generators.c) Installation of solar thermalcollectors, also combined with sy-stems of solar cooling;d) The substitution of electricwater heaters with heat pumps. In order to access the incentives, theactions of substitutions ofplants/equipment listed above mustbe realized in existing buildings andrural buildings. In the case of installation of solarthermal plants, also combined withtechnologies of solar cooling, the ac-tions can be realized on new buildingsas well. The incentives for small actions rela-tive to plants for the production ofsolar thermal energy from renewableresources and high efficiency systemscan be requested by Public Admini-strations as well as by private entities. It specifies that for any replacementsof existing winter heating systemswith heat pumps or biomass heat ge-nerators with total thermal power ex-ceeding 500 kW and up to 1 MW, theresponsible entity must request en-rollment in the GSE’s special compu-ter records. For both types of subjectbeneficiaries (government and pri-vate), there is also a specific incentivefor the Energy Diagnosis and EnergyCertification, if processed in the con-text of the interventions and accor-ding to criteria to be specified in theapplication rules of the GSE. The in-centive will cover 100% or 50% of thecost depending on the person admit-ted.

Electric and thermal energy are in-dispensable to everyday life. They

guarantee us heat and useful energy, but it is also true that the costs on ourbills and costs to the environment arerapidly increasing, and the public opi-nion is geared towards more rationaland eco-sustainable energy. Actionsto rationalize energy and avoid wasteguarantee higher energy indepen-dence, providing the consumer with anotable savings in costs for the pur-chase of energy, favoring the develop-ment of a greener energy economy. The Authorities of Electric Energy andGas promote actions for energy effi-ciency through the recognition ofEnergy Efficiency Credits, more com-monly known as white certificates orEnergy Efficiency Credits (TEE).The white certificates prove achieve-ments in energy savings through theapplication of efficient technologiesand systems. They are issued by theElectricity Market Operator (GME)based on verifications of savingsachieved, carried out by the authori-ties. A certificate is equivalent to thesavings of one ton of petrol (tep),which is the conventional unit usedcommonly in energy budgets to ex-

press all sources of energy, taking intoaccount their calorific value. The promotion of energy savingsthrough the white certificates wasprovided by the Ministerial Decrees ofJuly 20, 2004, which establish thatevery year objectives for obligatoryenergy savings will be set for the di-stributors of electric energy and thecompanies that distribute natural gas. The objectives are growing with timeand can be reached through the reali-zation of actions by the final consu-mers (eg.: installation of highefficiency appliances or water hea-ters, interventions in thermal insula-tion of buildings, interventions toincrease energy efficiency of indu-strial processes, high efficiency lightbulbs etc.) bringing about direct bene-fits in terms of reducing energy costs. The Authority evaluates energy sa-vings achieved by single actions andauthorizes the GME to issue the whitecertificates. The TEE are issued to di-stributors, companies controlled bythe distributors themselves or for thebenefit of companies in the servicesector (ESCOs), by the Electricity Mar-ket Operator (GMS), in order to certifythe reduction of consumption achie-

ved through actions and projects forincreased energy efficiency. The Italian experience is the first inthe world with the application of amarket instrument dedicated to thepromotion of energy efficiency in thefinal uses of energy.Following its introduction in Italy, thestructure of the mechanism and theregulation of its implementation havebeen subject to in depth studies andanalyses by the European Commis-sion, the International Agency forEnergy, and by a growing number ofCountries, both European and extra-European (United States, Australia,Japan, Korea). As an alternative to the energy savingactions to be taken by the consumersthemselves (also in collaboration withthird parties), distributors can chooseto satisfy their own obligations bypurchasing, as a whole or in part, energy efficiency certificates certifyingthe savings achieved by other entities(other distributors or companies ope-rating in the energy services). Thebuying and selling of the certificatestakes place through bilateral con-tracts or through the market for effi-ciency certificates, organized andmanaged by the Electricity Market

Operator, based on rules establishedin 2006 in consultation with the Au-thority. These rules determine the ex-tent of the contribution to be paid todistributors each year for achievingtheir obligations. The contribution(currently equal to 100 Euros per tonequivalent of petrol saved-tep) is fun-ded through a small withdrawal fromthe costs for the distribution of elec-tric energy and gas, established bythe Authority in order to guaranteethat the total burden on the energybill of consumers will be considerablyinferior to the total economic benefitderiving from the implementation ofthe mechanism (by 6 to 12 times). Thecontribution therefore supports therealization of interventions by consu-mers, thereby reducing their costs.SE will soon conclude an importantcollaboration agreement with an ope-ration company in the sector ofenergy services (ESCO), to offer itsreaders a service for increasingenergy efficiency, which is eligible forthe white certificates. This constitutesone more push forward to facilitateinvestments by companies and indivi-duals.

With a note published last February9, the GSE (Manager of Energy

Services) informs the public that thephotovoltaic meter has reached thevalue of 6,554,565,645 euros, with a re-duction of the indicative annual cost ofthe incentives recognized for photovol-taic plants as published on February 8. This update—the GSE specifies—is dueto the control activities of documentreview and site visits, performed to en-sure that the requirements set by cur-rent regulations and the accuracy ofthe statements made by the person re-sponsible for the plant at the time ofrequests for admission to the Registerand to the incentivizing rates. In fact these are systematic checks, notrandom ones as called for by the regu-lation, which the GSE is carrying out onplants that are already connected, andin virtue of some declarations by theresponsible parties that turned out tobe false. It seems however, that the ac-tivity of the GSE, whose function we re-spect and whose difficulties we arefully aware of, is particularly directedtowards the plants that were approvedby third party collaborators, to whomGSE had entrusted the practices of re-cognition of the incentives. In particular the action is directed to-ward those plants that requested and

A SPECIAL

ITALIAN-STYLE MESS

16

Systematic, in depthchecks on plants haverevealed how difficultit is to apply regula-tions that for yearshave continued toburden operators, posing new problemsfor the application ofchanges and for theonset of requestswhose urgency is con-stantly increasing

SE 4-2013 english:Smart Energy 13/03/13 09:07 Page 16

obtained the 10% premium on Euro-pean products, providing the docu-ments that, at the time, were tangledin a confusing legislation on the vali-dity of factory inspections and theproduction chain, which was constan-tly expanding. After significant delay, accounting do-cuments and technical forms were re-quested and the responsible partywas not always able to recover them, because in the meantime the suppliercompanies had closed their doors, ashad the installers and designers. This is an Italian style mess, for whichthe GSE is not responsible. (On thecontrary, we understand yet againunexpected operative stress.)However, some reflection is appro-priate. Why, since the month of Au-gust 2012 until October 2012, did theGSE meter rise so wildly, nearly rea-ching a 50% increase, regardingplants with the so-called innovativecharacteristics of the fourth EnergyAccount as well?We have revealed many times howthis race for the incentives has beenable to trick the GSE itself. The com-panies complained of a significant fallin sales, while the plants, at least onpaper, were springing up like mushro-oms. The impression is that not evenEnel could launch so many at once.We believe that serious verificationsshould be carried out on this aspectof the meter. Following the verification activities, the GSE has confirmed the inaccura-cies in the declarations made by theresponsible parties of some plants inthe act of accessing the Register. Those plants have been excludedfrom the ranking of the first Registerof the D.M. of July 5, 2012 (FifthEnergy Account). The plants of theranking relative to the first Registerwere also excluded because of the ju-dicial decisions that confirmed the ef-ficacy of the proceedings of art. 23and 43 of the D.lgs. 28/2011, put intoeffect by the GSE as a result of pre-

vious docu-ment controlsand/or inspec-tions of theplants. The provisionsfor awardingincentivizingrates to plants already in operationwere also cancelled, for which non-compliance was found to technicaland/or administrative proceduresprovided for the by law for the reco-gnition of the incentivizing rates. In addition the incentivizing rate wasredefined with respect to the initiallyrecognized one, relative to plants forwhich the GSE carried out site inspec-tions, discovering non-compliancewith technical requirements for archi-tectural integration (D.M. February 19,2007) or of the incentive for plantsrealized “on buildings” (D.M. August 6,2010 and D.M. May 5, 2011).Lastly, the incentivizing rate “on buil-dings” was recognized in place of thatwhich is due for the interventions ofinnovative architectural integration(Heading III of D.M. May 5, 2011) forthe plants whose installation lackedthe qualifications set forth in the"Guide to architectural integration forthe architectural integration of photo-voltaics."In summary, one big Italian style messreveals, yet again, how certain regula-tions can seem like Greek. They aredifficult to interpret and even moredifficult to apply. The whole sectorgives its thanks!

In France in 2019 the first “atomic ce-metery” may be inaugurated. Loca-

ted at a depth of 500 meters in thevillage of Bure, where the Meusemeets Haute-Marne, in the northeastof the country, the industrial centerwas planned to collect 10,000 cubicmeters of highly radioactive wasteand 70,000 cubic meters of long-la-sting medium radioactive waste, pro-duced by the current French atomicpark. It would therefore be essentiallyan enormous atomic cemetery, com-posed of 15 square kilometers of tun-nels and cavities in which theradioactive elements will be enclosedfor all eternity, or almost. These wastematerials can last hundreds of thou-sands of years, and for some of themcan even last for millions. The cost, initially estimated at 16.5 billioneuros, has now more than doubledand stands at about 36 billion euros.Currently a 4-month public debate isplanned to analyze the feasibility ofthe project. After which, in 2015, the

request for authorization at the publiclevel will be screened. Obviously the question has sparkedcontrasting reactions. There are thosewho maintain the impracticality of theproject, stating that the geologicalrisks have been underestimated, while there are those who support itand believe it is possible to avoid anyrisk of disaster. The comment of SE: reflect people, re-flect!

An article that appeared recently onCorriereweb revealed that many

Italian research institutions are stillpushing for the adoption of nuclearplants to produce clean energy. Thearticle instigated a passionate debateon Linkedin, on a blog where manyItalians are participating in discus-sions of current issues, very oftenconnected to the world of work, pro-duction, and culture. We report here some of the com-ments that were published, therebytaking a sort of snapshot of Italianopinions, a safe distance away fromthe events of Fukushima, Japan.

I don’t have such knowledge to beable to discuss what is necessary tomake a nuclear plant run. That isn’tthe point. If it were the point, in thereferendum we would have had tovote only for nuclear engineers, physi-cal and chemical theorists. Nuclearenergy was a political and managerialchoice. Italy chose to go another di-rection but the reality is that Italy ha-

sn’t done anything except thinking ofincreasing the supply of oil andbuying energy produced by Frenchand Swiss nuclear plants built ad hocjust outside of our borders. They aremaking us pay for kilowatts withoutbeing accountable for the waste ofthe nuclear results, and if there wereto be an accident, we would not besafe. We may as well have built themourselves. E.M.

Examining the situation is simplefor me. No to returning to nuclearpower now…Yes to researching wi-thout prejudice (including fission), re-gret for having spent like completeidiots (and certainly not for environ-mentalist reasons) on the plants thatwe had. M.B.

80% of nuclear power plants underconstruction are in the Third World, where levels of safety are not alwaysat their highest. In the world there are433 active nuclear power plants, 69under construction, 160 planned, and

A discussion that provokes strong reactionsand further divides opinions in the Country

SE 4-2013 english:Smart Energy 13/03/13 09:07 Page 24

329 have been proposed: this datacomes from Barbara Thomas Judge, president emeritus of the AtomicEnergy Authority of the United Kin-gdom. The USA is the leader in nu-clear energy (104 plants), followed byFrance (58), Japan (50), Russia (33),South Korea (23) and India (20). ButChina is focusing above all on the de-velopment of nuclear power. Today ithas 16 active plants, 26 under con-struction, 51 already planned, and120 proposed for construction. S.C.

I hope that those writing, besideshaving studied to work in the nuclearsector, have other skills that allowthem to find appropriate work oppor-tunities. This is a wish that all who re-spect the popular opinion will refer tothe persons quoted above. It is a bitlike when a mayor closes traffic in asquare, even in cases when the popu-lation needs to give its best wishes tothe commercial enterprises that findthemselves there. N.B.

Nuclear power is dead because ofeverything that happened, all the di-sgraces, the waste problem, and notleast, because the citizens do notwant it…Thinking that one can controldestructive power like that of theatom seems insane to me…and don’tget me talking about the increased sa-fety of the ultra-modern and reliableplants….that is all just talk…Humanitycannot allow itself to put its own de-stiny in the hands of a technologythat could cause irreversible catastro-phes.

For me it’s enough that the hometeam is at its height. Nuclear energy, renewable energy, thermal energy, pyrolysis, and trigeneration are allthings of other peoples. Our hobby isthe most recent generation of cellphones. I am interested in someonewho tells me what great things can bedone. These are uncontroversialwords. G.V.

The opinion of SE. It seems to usthat the only center under construc-tion in Europe is located in Finland asa part of the Pheonix Project, ofFrench origin, which was meant toraise fourth generation nuclearplants, and which was already aban-doned before being finished. Initiallyit included two constructions, onebeing the Finnish project, and theother is Rhone. The French also reali-zed, after spending a quantity of pu-blic funds, that the waste problemhas not been solved, despite the pre-mises about this type of plant, andthey are also very costly. It is also worthwhile to say two wordsabout uranium, which as you all knowis a heavy metal found in truly smallquantities in the earth’s crust andwater. It is strongly radioactive butonly slightly reactive. For this reason, for use in nuclear power plants, it isnecessary to enrich it with fissile iso-tope. This process leaves behind awaste material that is called depleteduranium, which is much less radioac-tive, but is also used more than any-thing for weapons. In the current state of affairs, ura-nium is extracted in mines found mo-stly in the following countries:Canada, South Africa, Australia,Congo, Namibia, China, and Russia. InItaly one mine exists in Carso, andanother a few kilometers away fromBergamo. Neither of the mines is con-sidered to be of national interest. How much uranium is available to usthen? If we are talking about extrac-tion mines, we can count on 70-100years of coverage, if in plants like thecurrent ones, providing an amount ofenergy equal to 6% of the globalenergy demand. This clarification is unavoidable whenone begins to feel the quite justifieddoubt that, in the economic planningof some Countries, especially Italy, nuclear energy and renewable energymeet on an antithetical market.

A STRONG DESIRE FOR…

green energyin Italian homes

There are many Italians who areopen to making a small econo-

mic sacrifice in the name of eco-logy. The data from theSuperMoney Observatory revealsthat 12% of consumers are lookingfor ecological rates for supplyingenergy from renewable sources.Only 6 month ago, this percentagewas equal to only 8%. This sensitiveness regarding greenenergy seems to be increasing, inconjunction with a reduction in costsof renewable energy as well. The analysis conducted by SuperMo-ney has compared the prices of sometraditional rates with those of the“eco” offers proposed by the samecompanies. For an annual consum-ption of 2,500 kWh of electricity, thedifference is 54 euros per year. Thismeans that giving just barely 15 centsper day it is possible to contribute toimportant energy savings by choosingrenewable resources. For users whoconsume less electric energy, the dif-ference in price is even more imper-ceptible. There are already manycompanies on the market that arepropose ad hoc offers for those whowant to contribute to energy savin-with a “green” energy supply.

“This data highlights a very positivesituation. On one side, energy pro-viders are able to propose competi-tive offers for renewable resources, with a minimal difference in pricewith respect to traditional costs. Onthe other side, consumers are de-monstrating themselves to be openand receptive to ecological suppliers,a sign of growing environmental awa-reness and sensitivity.”Andrea Manfredi, Administrator Dele-gate of SuperMoney affirms this, ac-cording to whom the choice of manycitizens in favor of energy from rene-wable resources can in turn representan incentive for energy producers inthe direction of constant develop-ment of renewable resources. SE re-minds its readers as well that reducedrates exist for those who use electri-city for increased energy efficiency.Heat pumps provide an excellentexample of this. (source ZeroEmission)

Hong Kong has become part of thePeople’s Republic of China again.

In the city, life hasn’t changed much, because the Chinese government un-derstood immediately the economicand commercial potential of this terri-tory and therefore has adopted a ra-ther different policy there from thatof the rest of the country. Initially the “one country, two sy-stems” idea was viewed with certainaloofness, but it quickly reinforced it-self, as the economic growth of thismetropolis has been attracting moreand more international investments.According to Sole24Ore, 43% of fo-reign direct investments in China, since it opened its doors to foreign in-vestments, were generated in or pas-sed through Hong Kong. Regarding Italian companies presentin Hong Kong, estimates are at 400. One reason for this success, besidesHong Kong’s declared fight againstcriminality, corruption, and politicaldestabilization, is certainly the fiscalregime of Hong Kong. Let’s examine the taxation advanta-ges.Companies registered in Hong Kongare not subject to the payment of anytaxes, on the condition that no tran-saction is done in Hong Kong. In theopposite case, the tax rate increasesto 16.5% on profits generated overthe course of the year.

A company will be subject to taxationif it holds offices with employees inHong Kong, if the current manage-ment of the company is located com-pletely or partly in Hong Kong, if theclients of the company live in HongKong, if the suppliers are in HongKong, and/or if the material for sale isstored in Hong Kong. In cases whennone of the conditions listed aboveoccur, a request for the status of “off-shore business” or “zero taxationcompany” must be sent to the tax au-thorities of Hong Kong so that thecompany may not be subject to anytaxation. It should be noted that because HongKong is a special administrative re-gion, it is absolutely possible to con-duct business with China without thepayment of any taxes.

energy management system

we need to trace

our energy profile

40

The current economic crisis has hi-ghlighted, in our Country above all,

how much the incidence of theenergy factor influences the price perunit of industrial product. It has be-come mandatory for enterprises toanalyze beyond the rules and regula-

tions, which are constantly becomingmore binding, the energy structure, inorder to eliminate waste and uselesscosts that directly burden the finalcost of the product, in abnormalamounts with respect to the competi-tion. Even companies that consume alot of energy, which by Law have hadto name a so-called Energy Manager, probably have not yet found thatwhich I maintain is the missing link in

the chain for an effective, real, anddocumented analysis of the produc-tive energy profile, or rather of theenergy management system. We are talking about an instrumentcomposed of two elements, connec-ted by an interactive logic, constituted

by a base hardware of data acquisi-tion and by a platform software thatanalyzes the data and elaborates it asa function of technical logic, as well aseconomic and administrative logic inorder to provide all the necessary in-struments for the managerial controlof energy to corporate executives.Probably the current principle limit ofthe Complex Systems such as the In-dustries or the big Public and Private

Administrations, is that everythingthat revolves around the Energy usedby those organizations is fragmentedinto various features, and individualmanagers lack an unequivocal andstraightforward trace based on realdata. Rather, they rely solely on docu-mentary evidence (bills, invoices, hi-storical data never verified in thefield). For the Industry, as for any complexorganization (Hospitals, Business Cen-

ters, Shopping Centers, Apartmentbuildings, etcetera) it is necessary atthis point to be familiar with one’sown energy profile based on precisedata and not just hypothesized Para-meter-mediated tables of more orless effective Regulations or on the in-dividual evaluations of field techni-cians (even of those same EnergyManagers). These latter must equipthemselves with the appropriate kno-wledge for use of the new instru-ments that are presenting themselveson the international market, and arebased on, not only complex andadaptable algorithms and all possiblesituations, but also on multi-year testscarried out to verify their effective-ness in various fields of application. This is in fact one of the distingui-shing elements in the choice of anenergy management system, which isthe guarantee of reliability verified onthe field in the most disparate situa-tions.Other elements to evaluate are thesimplicity of implementation of thesystem and the efficacy of the expla-

natory reports on the levels of Gra-phics and of summarizing Tables. Also the completeness of the parame-ters that can be analyzed is funda-mental in order to evaluate theSystem that must include:-Analysis of Consumption of:• Lighting plant• Driving force plant• Heating and cooling plant• Photovoltaic plant• Cogeneration plant

-Internal and external:•Temperature and humidity•Wind speed•Luminosity•CO2 concentrationThe continuously monitored va-lues will be associated with algo-rithms capable of producingcomplex analyses of:- Accounting treatment of Con-sumption and Time slots ofenergy use

- Benchmarking Energy costs as a fun-ction of production- Triggering of alarms (as a function ofdeviations from the reference values)- Creation of Energy Patterns andControl Charts customized for users-Display of autonomous System Ano-malies of Energy production-Control of Energy Bills and rate offersfor the purchase of energy.-Conformity of the energy manage-ment system to the effective Regula-tions. The use of these sophisticatedinstruments thus involves an effectivesystem of Technical Training which, among other things, satisfies the re-quirements laid out by the new Regu-lations in the field of energy auditswith the new definition of the EGEs,or rather the “Energy ManagementExperts” according to UNI CEI 113399.

Kaco New Energy: in Germany the first European city equipped withenergy reservoirs is born

KACO new energy GmbH, one ofthe major producers of photovol-

taic inverters in the world, intends todevelop for the first time, a completesystem for energy management in thescope of a pilot project. Since the month of August 2012, inthe municipality of Weinsberg, in thedistrict of Heilbronn, the realization ofa model neighborhood is in progress, where photovoltaic energy covers al-most all the electric energy providedand contributes to heat production aswell. The provision of electric energy by theso-called “Tank of the Weinsbergquarter” will be made possible by theinstallation of a photovoltaic plantwith more partial generators that willadd up to an installed capacity of

150.12 kW. Regarding the averagesolar energy accumulation, the re-course to a central battery running onlithium ions of 150 Kwh is planned. Tocharge and unload the battery, KACOhas developed a bidirectional inverterwith a power of 120 kW, which is di-stinguished for its rapid reactiontimes and its high performance. With regard to storage of solarenergy, on the other hand, the use ofa central buffer tank with a capacityof about 20,000 liters is planned, which will be connected to a networkalong with a local thermal UHPS and aheat pump. In addition, every buildingwill feature a reservoir tank for dailyuse. In order to make the maximumamount of thermal energy and elec-tric energy available from solar

energy and the combination ofthese various elements, in additionto the management of electricenergy, KACO new energy will oc-cupy itself with the control of allthermal components. This will include monitoring activi-ties as well, which will record allenergy fluxes in the quarter. The

data obtained will be used for the op-timization of the system. “Occupying itself with the entire pro-cess of energy management for a nei-ghborhood reservoir, KACO newenergy demonstrates that our com-pany does not intend to affirm itselfjust as a producer of components, butto show that it is able to offer itsclients highly complex integrated sy-stems,” confirms the delegate admini-strator Ralf Hofmann, commenting onthe high relevance of the project forthe company. The model neighborhood will servealso to analyze how neighborhood re-servoirs can relieve or support the pu-blic electric network. For this reason, along with networkmanagers, KACO new energy will de-fine the requisites of the structure ofthe future network, elaborating its pa-rameters of regulation.

The Weinsberg pilot project offers theopportunity to provide a local energysupply with solar power from whichcan even be utilized by large custo-mers such as hotels and businesses. The construction of the “Steinbru-chweg” quarter was launched in Au-gust of 2012. Over an area of 16,000m², 23 residential units will be built:six single family homes are planned,in addition to one single family homewith an apartment, ten terraced hou-ses and five unit multifamily housing. The conclusion of work is planned forthe end of 2013. The design task wasentrusted to the studio of Kruck +Partner Wohnbau und Projektentwic-klung GmbH and Co. KG Heilbronn. The modules for the photovoltaic

plant are by Yingli Green Energy.Smart modules of the PANDA seriesof Yingli Solar will be utilized with apower capacity of 270 W, equippedwith the Optimizer technology of TigoEnergy.KACO new energy is one of the majorproducers of inverters for supplyingthe network with solar energy at theworld level. The gamma of productsthat the company offers includes avast spectrum of supplies for plants

intended for single familyhomes including even solarenergy parks that requirethe delivery of several me-gawatts. The company, based in Neckarsulm, car-ries out its activities of realizing inver-ters with accumulated power of about6 gigawatts. KACO new energy was the first com-pany of the photovoltaic sector toproduce its own inverter, Powador, with zero CO2 emissions. The types ofinverters available range from thosewith connection to the network andthose than run on battery, to those in-tended for thermal electric plants andfor concentration modules, and inclu-ding also those that can be integrated

into systems of energy accumulationfor solar plants.

Fastled:a new dimension to illuminate companies

Our company, which has been wor-king for years on energy savings,

renewable energy, and comfort, pre-sents itself to the market with an am-bitious new project. In fact, besides presenting productsfor heating and cooling of buildings, and for photovoltaic modules, AD-VANTIX SPA has founded FASTLED SRLwith the objective of proposing avant-garde solutions in the sector of LED li-ghting design to its clients. With our wide range of products weare able to cover a major part of tradi-tional lighting design solutions availa-ble in the following sectors: domestic, commercial, industrial, hotel, public, even special lighting and particularlyartistic lighting (churches and monu-ments).All the models are equipped with highefficiency converters, with the highpower of 220 volts. The visual, electricand size aspects of the products weredesigned to be adaptable to the li-

ghting supplies currentlyavailable on the market. In the production phase, the components of the va-rious materials are assem-bled and their functioningis verified, while during the disposalphase a series of selection and sepa-ration steps are carried out. In the case of LED lights, all opera-tions are simplified because they aremade from completely reusable ma-terials.

But the aspect that, LED li-ghting is a product that canhelp significantly to defendthe environment, concernsthe absence of substancesthat are toxic and noxious toboth human and animal he-alth, not to mention LED’senergy savings, causing ahuge reduction in the amountof toxic gases released intothe atmosphere resultingfrom consumption of electric

energy. Many companies illuminate their spa-ces with plants running on old gene-ration methods, wasting both electricenergy and money, not to mentionthe considerable costs of periodicalmaintenance of the equipment. With appropriate scaling, our com-pany proposes the replacement ofobsolete lighting and, through our fi-nancial consultants, preparing a solidpayment plan, in which the clientfinds himself paying a leasing/finan-cing rate lower than what he wouldotherwise pay to the energy utilitycompanies. The objective of our project is to giveItalian companies a valid alternativeto make the switch from old lightingtechnology that generates wastes ofmoney and of resources, to a new te-chnology with high energy savingsand certainly optimal visual impact.

Energy madness…and there eventhose who burn urine.

In the process of greening energy pro-duction, there are those who baketheir brains trying to find new solu-tions, and maybe some of those solu-tions are a bit fanciful. In Japan theSFD Recycle System has decided tostart to pulverize the diapers used bymany elderly people in the country, toadapt them to supply large biomassboilers. In Great Britain, a group of re-searchers is studying the use of urineas a fuel. Pee is chemically very active, rich in nitrogen and compounds suchas urea, chloride, potassium, and bili-rubin, which make it very useful formicrobial fuel cells. In the Nether-lands they have thought thoroughlyabout taking advantage of kineticenergy. Special floorings have beeninvented, and then inserted in a gi-gantic discotheque, capable of captu-ring energy from the passing ofpeople.

120 million for electric cars.

The official Gazette notes the incenti-ves for those who purchase ecologicalcars, which take effect on March 14,2013. The benefits will be availableduring the three year period of 2013-2015, with one global allocation thatamounts to 120 million euros, whichwill be divided as follows: 40 millioneuros for 2013, 35 million for 2014,and 45 million euros for 2015. For ve-hicles purchased until 2014 the bonusis equal to 20% of the cost, up to amaximum of 5,000 euros for vehicleswith C02 emissions inferior to 50g/km; 4,000 for those whose emis-

sions are inferior to 95 g/km; 2,000for those who emissions are not morethan 120 g/km. In 2015, the contribu-tion is equal to 15% of the cost, withmaximum amounts of 3,500 euros forvehicles within 50 g/km of CO2 emis-sions; 3,000 for those who emissionsare inferior to 95 g/km; 1,800 eurosfor vehicles that do not surpass 120g/km of CO2.

Photovoltaic varnish coming soon.

A team of Italian researchers, toge-ther with the Institute for the study ofnano-structural materials of the Bolo-gna CNR, has in fact created the firstvarnish that transforms the light fromthe Sun into energy. For years compa-nies and research centers have beenworking to achieve this goal, but thisgroup of Italians was the first to reachthe objective. Ecology by the stroke ofthe brush. Photon Inside is the nameof the special varnish, which can betreated like a common paint. It can bespread over any surface and reap-plied gradually as it degrades. It doesnot have architectural or environmen-tal impacts and it resists atmosphericagents. From 50 square meters ofwalls treated with Photon Inside, onecan obtain 3 kW of energy. The costs?Rather controlled. One three storybuilding, inhabited by six families, re-quires about 288 square meters pain-ted to guarantee to each family 3kWof power, with a total cost of 59,400euros.

the pilot project that plans to dedicateat least one hour per day of class timeto digital contents. Among the sub-jects that the lessons will concentrateon, developed through the platformof online collaboration and web con-ferences, the Smart City is included,as well as e-learning and eco-sustai-nable transportation. New inclusiveinstruments to grow and educateoneself in school allows all students, teachers, and professionals in innova-tion, to develop new design ideas forthe realization of the smart city inevery aspect: from the relations withthe environment, from clean energyto the reduction of pollutants, fromfull digital teleconferences that are al-ways connected to the city, from alter-native transportation (electric) to thevirtuous recycling of garbage. Thanksto the web conference, it is possibleto exploit the horizontal and imme-diate sharing of knowledge, opinions, and skills, between schools and stu-dents, innovators and public admini-strations, without relocatingphysically, thereby avoiding modes oftransport that pollute and create traf-fic on the roads of communication.

Wheelchairs for handicapped people running on solar energy.

Clean energy has the potential to be asymbol of respect for the life of all ofhumanity. And respect for life means, above all, not leaving behind the mostunfortunate individuals. Today an ap-parently banal, but completely valid, invention is taking a decisive step inthis direction. In the Swiss Confedera-tion, the ‘Swiss Solar Prize,’ a recogni-tion for particularly distinctive figuresin the field of solar energy develop-

ment, was recently awarded. Thisyear the winner was the QuimbyHuus project, a rehabilitation andcare center for disabled people in SanGallen, Switzerland. The structureruns on a solar plant that, amongother things, powers the wheelchairsof the residents. Thanks to this me-chanism, it is estimated today thatevery patient has independently tra-velled about 1,500 km, using only theenergy of the sun. An important pieceof data for the autonomy of less for-tunate people. The next step? Theconstruction of wheelchairs with anindependent recharging mechanism, capable of receiving the energy neces-sary for movement directly from thesun. The solidarity comes straightfrom the sun.

Smart Grids moving forward in China

According to a recent study by the Bri-tish research group, Bloomberg NewEnergy Finance, technologies forsmart grids have registered a 7% in-crease in investments in 2012, for anannual turnover of 13.9 billion dollars, especially in China’s push forward, which has represented almost a quar-ter, 23% of global investments in thesector: 3.2 billion dollars with agrowth of 14% in one year. We notethat SE has written various articles onthis type of solution for energy inde-pendence for houses and businesses.
