News – A Vital Part of SDPBIn the days before 24-hour cable news and social

media, news was reported on TV and radio stations and in newspapers on an hourly, daily or weekly basis. The machine that was responsible for disseminating news to news outlets from the 1910s to the 1990s was the teletype – a printer connected to a central agency that printed news stories, weather information, sports scores, and more. The Associated Press introduced the “telegraph typewriter” into newsrooms in 1914, and, by 1935, the “teletype” was in use by both AP and United Press.

On April 1, 1944, KUSD (the University of South Dakota radio station that would eventually become part of SDPB) obtained our first teletype. It was such big news at the time, that the exact moment the first news story was read using information from the AP teletype was noted (it was 3:30pm), and became the subject of a newspaper article in the USD Volante and other newspapers.

It happened at a momentous time in history. D-Day was two months away and World War II dominated the headlines. Thousands of South Dakotans were serving overseas. The war was one of the first events that drew Americans from across the continent together, and modern technologies like teletypes and radio stations kept people on the homefront informed.

News continues to be an important service provided by SDPB. Our staff covers the annual South Dakota Legislative Session, activity by local governments and individuals, and pieces of interest for and about South Dakota. Our public affairs programming gives listeners and viewers the opportunity to share in a statewide conversation. SDPB News has been recognized repeatedly for the quality of reporting, with awards from the Associated Press, Silver Microphone and Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio TV News Directors Association (RTNDA) and national awards from Scripps-Howard.

From the first time news was shared via wireless in 1922, to today’s consumer getting news on their wireless computer or mobile device, SDPB has been there with the important news of the day. We continue that tradition with state, national and global reports every day.

Your support makes it possible.

Clark, who has been absent from JazzNightly since last June, originally came to SDPB in 2001. He previously worked in Sandusky, Mich., where he was a radio news director, and has been a host for jazz and big band programs in Michigan, Arizona and New Hampshire.

Antiques Roadshow Tickets Deadline Here pbs.org/antiques

Antiques Roadshow is coming to South Dakota this summer and you have until April 16 to sign up for tickets to the appraisal event.

The appraisal event will take place at Rapid City’s Rushmore Plaza Civic

Center on Saturday, July 14. You’ll have a chance to show off

your treasures to the variety of experts at the event – but only if you have tickets. Admission to the appraisal event is free, but tickets are required and must be obtained in advance.

Tickets are distributed by a random drawing, here’s how it works.

Online: Visit pbs.org/antiques and click on “2012 Tour.” Fill out the form and submit it by April 16. You can go online May 8 to find out whether you will receive tickets.

By mail: Send a standard postcard to: RAPID CITY ROADSHOW, P.O. Box 249, Canton, MA 02021. Include your name, address, city, state and zip code. If you get tickets, they will arrive via mail in late June or early July.

Ticket information and complete ticketing rules are available on pbs.org/antiques or by calling toll-free 888-762-3749. Only one application per household is allowed and applicants must be 18 years of age. All ticket applications must be received by April 16 at 10:59pm (9:59 MT).

In addition, the Roadshow Furniture Roundup is seeking large pieces of furniture located within a 50-mile radius of Rapid City to be included in the appraisal event on July 14. If your furniture is selected, you’ll get two tickets to the show, and the Roadshow team will make arrangements to transport the furniture to the event and back at no cost to you! The owner of the furniture must attend the event. For more information and complete furniture submission rules visit pbs.org/antiques.

Prairie Yard and Garden Debuts on SDPB1SDPB1: Saturdays, 4pm (3 MT)

Get growing this season with a new gardening series on Saturdays: Prairie Yard and Garden. The 30-minute television show focuses on gardening in the upper midwest. Prairie Yard and Garden is produced by the Media Services Department at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

Larry Zilliox, former University of Minnesota Extension educator from Alexandria, Minn., is the host of the successful

gardening series. Each season, the series travels the state to meet with researchers, gardening and nursery professionals, educators and ordinary backyard gardeners to discuss specific issues in horticulture, landscaping and a host of topics in gardening.

The Moth Featured on Best of the RestSDPB Radio: Saturday, 3pm (2 MT)

SDPB Radio features several weeks of The Moth Radio Hour during the Best of the Rest spot on the Saturday schedule at 3pm (2 MT). The Best of the Rest is radio’s home for quality short-run series and specials. The Moth begins on April 14, following a series of Freakonomics programs.

The Moth features true stories told live on stage without scripts, notes, props, or accompaniment. Each Moth Radio Hour

mixes humorous, heartbreaking, and poignant tales that captivate, surprise, and delight audiences with their honesty, bravery and humor.

Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theaters and clubs around New York City and the country.

Contributors, Volunteers Make Festival a Success

Julie Andersen talks to SDPB Television viewers as phone volunteers work on computers during the SDPB Television Festival drive.

Thank you!The support of viewers from throughout

the South Dakota region helped make SDPB Television’s recent Festival drive one of the most successful ever.

Among the most popular programs was Over South Dakota, a stunning aerial tour of our beautiful state (watch for a reprise in June). The Antiques Roadshow special, featuring tickets to the July 14 appraisal event in Rapid City, was a huge hit, too (see page 7 for details of the Antiques Roadshow visit).

Thank you to the hundreds of viewers who chose to support Public Television and to the volunteers who made the drive possible. They include: the General Federation of Women’s Groups, the USD School of Business and the USD School of Education, who provided phone volunteers. In addition, Wal-Mart of Vermillion

provided snacks and beverages. It is still possible to make a contribution.

Go to SDPB.org and click on “Donate Now” at the top right of the page. Or, call 800-333-0789.

You make SDPB Television possible. Thank You.

Thank You for Memorial Gifts to Friends of SDPBSeveral people have made memorial gifts

recently. Thank you. Memorial gifts help create a legacy since

they become part of the Friends of SDPB Endowment.

Several people offered gifts in memory of Carol Hjort of Rapid City. They include Barry Hjort of Rapid City, Howard Hjort of Falls Church, Va., Joyce Hjort of Urbandale, Iowa, and Shannon Paikos of Rapid City.

Henry and Phyllis Niemann of Clear Lake honored the memory of Richard Haug with a memorial gift.

Friends of SDPB is grateful for special gifts. Special gifts can include:• Memorial gifts.• Gifts to commemorate a special

occasion or honor a special person.• Estate-planning gifts.• Vehicle donations.• Gifts of property such as stocks and

bonds. To make a special gift, call the Friends at
