Spring 2015

E-Newsletter

Welcome, SDONS members, to 2015! We have a jam-packed E-Newsletter for you, full of information and wonderful photos! We hope you enjoy and that this E-Newsletter will find you eager to get involved and have a great 2015! Let us start by meeting our 2015 Leadership Team:

Meloddie Brooks, 2015 SDONS President and her husband, Matt

A word from your new 2015 President:

Dear San Diego Oncology Nursing Society Member,

For some of you, we are so happy to welcome you to our chapter! You are already an important member of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), and now you are also an essential member of our local San Diego Chapter. We couldnt be more proud and honored to have another oncology nurse join us. Networking, volunteering, and resume building couldnt be easier when you belong to a chapter. Connect with other oncology nurses and make a difference in our neighborhood.

Since 1975, ONS has provided a professional community for oncology nurses, developed evidence-based education programs and treatment information, and advocated for patient care, all in an effort to improve quality of life and outcomes for patients with cancer and their families. Take full advantage of your ONS membership and attend our next local chapter meeting or contact us for more information.

We typically meet on the third Thursday of the month, excluding July and December. To RSVP, you will need to log in to the virtual community and RSVP under the calendar section by typing in your first and last name in the designated section. This year, our Vendor Fair will be on Thursday, December 3rd. You are welcome to bring a professional colleague as a guest if you wish. Unfortunately, dates such as spouses and children are not allowed.

We hope you get involved and join us at our events and meetings. We also have board member meetings and all is welcomed. The last Leadership Team meeting was Saturday, January 10th, 2015. Following Leadership Team meetings will be March 11th, May 13th, August 12th, October 14th and November 18th. If you were curious what the board is doing, or have an interest in possibly becoming a board member in the future, I highly recommend and welcome you to attend any of these meetings. There are incentives to being a board member as well! Each member of the Leadership Team receives a $500 scholarship to use toward oncology or nursing related education. In addition to that, we offer 8 scholarships in the amount of $400 each during the year. The winners of these scholarships have 1 year to use the money for advancing their knowledge or oncology/nursing related education.

We have a lot coming up in the next few months, so I hope you are as excited as I am to have joined the San Diego Chapter of ONS. Welcome!

Meloddie Brooks, RN, BSN, OCN

Your senator needs to know that you already work full-time.

A troubling new bill called the The Save American Workers Act of 2015 passed the House of Representatives last Thurs, 01-22. If it passes the Senate, the bill will change the definition of full-time work from 30 hours to 40 hours. If you're a nurse who works 36 hours weekly, that means that you could be considered a part-time employee, who is not elgible for healthcare benefits. Learn more about the billandplease contact your U.S. senator.

Report from the Second Annual Scripps Cancer Care Symposium: By Meloddie Brooks RN, BSN, OCNSan Diego Oncology Nurses Representing at the: Second Annual Scripps Cancer Care Symposium. Our very own past leaders directed the event. Great job Cathleen Sugarman! As well as, active board members leading the workshops like Paula Muehlbauer. This years conference sessions was informative and practical in cancer care. There were many new interesting topics (i.e., Cancer & Nutrition, Economic & the Cancer Patient, Symptom Management for Grade 3 & 4 Side Effects, End of Life, Rehabilitation following Cancer Therapy.) Other detailed cancer subjects were on Lung Cancer Screening, Breast Cancer, and Prostate Cancer. I especially liked the session Ask the Experts Panel Discussion/Q&A. The panel representatives comprised of a Physician, Physician Assistant, Pharmacist, and a Palliative Nurse. Nationwide oncology nurses asked questions referring to issues with chemotherapy and funding/billing. Other issues include how to handle stressful situations with physicians, patients, and their families. I was happy to see SDONS members, like Jennifer (Alisangco) Tchanz, Jane Underwood, Ronnah Montemayor, Chawn Tipton, and few others from facial recognition but I forgot your names. My apologies. Out of the 235 nurses that attended 1 of our very own SDONS members won the Big Raffle. Lucky Ronnah won the free pass to attend next years Third Annual Scripps Cancer Care Symposium planned for October 2-4, 2015. Aside from Ronnah, I hope to see more of you there.

Report from 2014 National ONS Congress By Laura Sauer, RN MSN CNS OCNAt the 2014 Congress in Anaheim, I took some extra time to look at the poster presentations. From Karmanos Cancer Center from Wayne State University, this one in particular caught my eye, as the debate about what size catheter really needs to be used during a blood administration has gone on for as long as I have been a nurse at least. While the picture is hard to read, I will give you the synopsis: in patients with tiny veins (like our oncology patients) it is OK to use a 24 Gauge! Can you believe it? Their data recommended that a 16 G be reserved for acute trauma. 18s and 20s are still best practice, but 22 and even 24 were shown to be appropriate when needed.I was glad to see that someone tackled this, and even more glad that a 24 can be used! I f you want, I would be glad to send a bigger photo so you can read it easier. Just send an email to SD_ONS@yahoo,com!

Report from 2014 Congress byOlga N. Garcia, RN, BSNI would like to thank the board members of ONS for the $400 Scholarship! As a recovering Program Chair, I know how hard the board members work to keep the organization running and for there to be money for scholarship funds. I thank them for all their hard work.I feel there is no other organization that runs as well as the Oncology Nursing Society. What I plan on doing with the scholarship money is to reimburse myself for tuition for Congress 2014. This year I decided to not use Congress as an excuse for vacation, but to drive down to our neighbor Anaheim and really focus on what the message of Congress was. What I got out of Congress was how we can use technology for the betterment of our chosen field of nursing. Thisgot me to think about how sometimesI cannot even navigate the ONS website. I learned that I am a "Digital Immigrant,"--still learning how to navigate the web--as opposed to a "Digital Native", a nurse who knows how to navigate health connection on the first day of work. The future of nursing is changing and that future is now. For example, there are facilities that when you scan a foley catheter's packaging, it will alert the nurse to the new standards of practice before the package is even opened. One of ONS's goals is to support and value what each kind of nurse can bring to what is the ultimate goal of quality bedside care. I truly believe all nurses entering into the field of oncology nursing should make it a priority to attend Congress.

This year, SDONS decided to give back to our community in a very direct manner. Each nurse can probably think of a patient who was really in need, so SDONS partnered with a nurse or social worker who was able to identify a specific patient who they knew would benefit. We collected $5, $10, and $15 gift cards from the members and divided them up between 6 of the major San Deigo area hospitals. The gift cards were put on a small Christmas tree (see above), and delivered to the hospital...then given to the individual. One of the nurses who delivered one of the gift trees told us a little about that experience. "We picked a 30 year old lady who was struggling with her treatments. When we gave it to her, her face lit up, and she was so appreciative. I was so honored to be the one to give her this gift on behalf of SDONS. I hope we do this again next year."
