INTRODUCING SDL TRADOS 2007 SUITE

SDL Trados 2007 Suite is a suite of products that work together to enable translation teams to share translation tools, resources and project files. Resources such as translation memories and project tracking tools can be shared over an intranet or over the Internet.

SDL Trados 2007 Suite contains the following two products:

C SDL Trados 2007

C SDL Passolo Essential including all main functions needed for the localization of software

This guide mainly contains information on SDL Trados 2007. For more information on SDL Passolo Essential and its restrictions compared to the Professional and Team Editions, refer to the SDL Passolo Getting Started Guide and SDL Passolo Handbook included with SDL Passolo Essential. You can access this documentation from the Start view in SDL Trados Synergy or through the Windows Start menu under All Programs > SDL Passolo > Manuals.

SDL Trados 2007 Suite can also be a single-user tool where the SDL Trados 2007 Suite software and translation memories are located on your computer and there is no interaction with translation memories or projects over an intranet or the Internet.

System Architecture

In a multi-user setup SDL Trados 2007 Suite has a three layer architecture as this diagram shows. In a single-user setup all resources are located on the user’s computer.

The Client Layer

Clients include: Synergy, Translator’s Workbench, TagEditor, SDL Passolo and Server Manager. Synergy, Translator’s Workbench, TagEditor and SDL Passolo Essential are packaged together as SDL Trados 2007 Suite Professional and SDL Trados 2007 Suite Freelance.

C SDL Trados Server Manager is the client used by system administrators to manage server-based-translation memories and user access rights to translation memories.

C Synergy is the SDL Trados 2007 Suite project management tool where projects are created and distributed and project team members open and translate project packages.

C Translator’s Workbench is where translation memory administration is performed.

C TagEditor is where tagged files are translated. The special editing environment ensures that information in tags is not lost during translation.

1-4

C SDL Passolo Essential is a localization tool for text resource translation and software localization. Text resources are the text components of a software that are displayed on the screen.

C SDL Trados Server Manager is the administration client for server-side components of SDL Trados 2007 Suite.

In a setup that includes server components, clients communicate with SDL Trados 2007 Suite Server components through the intranet (through a LAN or WAN) or through the Internet using TM Anywhere Server. Clients communicate with database servers through middleware components.

NOTED

SDL Trados Server Manager communicates with SDL Trados 2007 Suite Server through the intranet only.

The Middleware Server Layer

Contains the servers that enable SDL Trados 2007 Suite users to access server-based translation memories and project tracking on the project tracking server. This layer also handles all communication with the databases holding translation memories.

The Database Server Layer

The database server layer is the data storage layer for SDL Trados 2007 Suite. It contains the databases where translation memories and user credentials are stored. One or more database servers can be used. Clients cannot access databases directly, all access is through servers in the Middleware layer.

Language Support

In general, language support in the SDL Trados translation memory suite corresponds to the language support installed on your system. For more information about specific support for bi-directional and double-byte character set (DBCS) languages in Translator’s Workbench, and TagEditor, see the relevant online help system and the product release notes. Additional information is available from the SDL online support center at http://support.sdl.com.

OVERVIEW OF INSTALLING SDL TRADOS PRODUCTS

The installation programs for both SDL Trados Freelance and Professional follow the same pattern:

At the end of the installation process you have the opportunity to activate the SDL Trados 2007 Suite product by licensing the software for the machine where it has been installed. See “About Activating SDL Trados 2007 Products” on page 2-9 for more information.

If you are using the software in trial mode, you have thirty days in which you can use it without purchasing a valid license. After 30 days, if you have not purchased a valid license the software will either cease to function or will function in a severely limited form known as demo mode.

For more information about product licensing, see Chapter 2 Licensing SDL Trados 2007.

Step 1 On the machine where SDL Trados is being installed, the installer program checks for the presence of prerequisite software. This is software that must be in place for SDL Trados to function correctly. For example, SDL Trados requires the .NET Framework 2 to be present. If pre-requisite software is not found on your machine, it is installed with SDL Trados.

Step 2 You are presented with a list of the items that will be installed. The list may include missing software prerequisites as well as SDL Trados software. At this point it is possible to remove items from the list. However, this is not recommended as SDL Trados will not function correctly if you do this.

Step 3 The listed software items are installed. Prerequisite software is installed before SDL Trados. Each item of prerequisite software may have its own installation screens and licensing agreement which are displayed in the SDL Trados 2007 Suite installer.

Step 4 You can choose to perform a default or custom installation of the SDL Trados 2007 Suite software. In a custom installation you can choose not to install all SDL Trados 2007 Suite components, or to install SDL Trados 2007 Suite to a non-default location.

Step 5 SDL Trados components are installed.

INSTALLATION MEDIA

When you purchase SDL software you can either order a product CD or download the software from the Internet.

C If you purchased a CD, install SDL Trados 2007 Suite directly from the product CD.

C If you are installing the software from a network resource, ask your system administrator for the network location of the SDL Trados 2007 Suite installer setup program.

C If you downloaded the software, go to the location where you stored the downloaded files and run the installer from there.

UPGRADE AND COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION

This section contains important information if you are upgrading from an earlier version of the software. It also discusses how different versions can co-exist during the transition period of upgrading.

We strongly recommend that you finish translating files that were initially processed in earlier versions before upgrading to SDL Trados 2007 Suite.

Upgrading from SDL Trados 2006 and SDL Trados 7.x

SDL Trados 2007 Suite supports side-by-side installation with SDL Trados 2006 and 7.x. However, SDLX 2007 cannot be installed side-by-side with SDLX 2006. Running the SDL Trados 2007 installer upgrades SDLX 2006 to SDLX 2007.

Translation Memory Compatibility

Translation memories created in SDL Trados 2007 Suite have the database version number 7.x.

Translation memories created in TRADOS 7.x and earlier can be opened by and used in version 8.x of Translator's Workbench. However, in order to benefit from the Unicode-related enhancements, it is necessary to export the 6.5 or earlier translation memories in version 6.x or earlier and then import them into newly created translation memories.

SDL TRADOS 2007 INSTALLATION GUIDE

Upgrade and Compat ib i l i t y In format ion 1

Translation memories created in versions 7.x/8.x of Translator’s Workbench cannot be opened in earlier versions of Translator's Workbench (version 6.5 and earlier). This is due to the support for new languages and the ability to store Unicode content in any language in translation memory metadata fields, such as text and attribute fields. However, translation memories can be exchanged between version 7.x and 8.x of Translator’s Workbench without any problems, as translation memories in these versions share the same database format. This applies to both file and server-based translation memories.

Importing 7.x/8.x-produced export files into a 6.x installation may result in corrupt TM data (fields, as well as segments), if Unicode characters are present in the 7.x/8.x TM that is exported into 6.x format.

By default, export files of Translator’s Workbench translation memories are now encoded in Unicode (UTF-8) in order to support the new languages and other Unicode content in translation memories. These export files can only be imported into version 7.x/8.x translation memories and cannot be exchanged with users of older versions. A backward-compatible export format is still available for use with older versions; however this file format does not support any of the new Unicode-related enhancements.

Installing Different Versions of SDL Trados on the Same Computer

During the upgrade period, you may want to have different versions of the SDL Trados translation solution co-exist on your computer. In this situation, we recommend the following:

In general, you can install SDL Trados 2007 Suite on the same computer as the previous versions (version 7.5 or earlier), provided that each version is installed to a separate folder. The default installation location for each version of the software is different.

Do not use different versions of the software at the same time. For example, close Translator's Workbench 7.x before registering and opening Translator's Workbench 8.x.

Do not run different versions of the same component at the same time. If you are using several tools at once, do not work with mixed versions of the software. For example, if you are translating files in TagEditor, use TagEditor 8.x with Translator's Workbench 8.x. Do not use TagEditor 8.x with Translator's Workbench 7.5 and vice versa.

We recommend that you use the same version of the software to translate files from start to finish. Migrating files from an earlier to a later version of the software when the project has already started may result in data inconsistencies.

When alternating between two different versions, you must register the software you are about to use by executing a special self-registration batch file. The batch file for each version is accessed from the Start menu on your computer.

1-8

TRADOS Edition 2.x, 3.x, 5.x

Limited compatibility may apply between SDL Trados 2007 Suite and editions 2.x/3.x/5.x of the TRADOS translation solution. Limited compatibility between translation memories created in Edition 2.x/3.x and Translator’s Workbench 5.x and 6.x may also apply. Contact SDL before migrating Edition 2.x/3.x/5.x memories to Translator’s Workbench 7.x/8.x.

Migrating from a Dongle to a License File

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Trados software which used a dongle you cannot use your old dongle with the later version of the software. Please contact customer support for additional information on upgrading your license.

MultiTerm Compatibility

SDL Trados 2007 Suite is compatible with the following SDL MultiTerm versions: MultiTerm 2007 (version 7.5) and previous 7.x releases, MultiTerm iX (version 6.x) and MultiTerm 5.5. SDLX 2007 is compatible with SDL MultiTerm 2007 and 7.x only. To avail of the new terminology features such as active terminology recognition across several terminology databases and quick term entry from Translator's Workbench and TagEditor, you must use MultiTerm 2007 or 7.x Desktop. For optimum performance, we recommend using MultiTerm 2007 (version 7.5) in conjunction with SDL Trados 2007 Suite.

Registering the Software

When alternating between two different versions, you must register the software you are about to use by executing a special self-registration batch file. The batch file for each version is accessed from the Start menu on your computer after installation.

C To register version 8.x of the software, go to the Start menu on your computer and point to the program folder for SDL Trados 2007 Suite. In the program folder, select Register SDL Trados 2007 to execute the batch file for the version 8.x software.

Once the you have run the batch file successfully, the software is ready for use.

NOTED

If you install SDL Trados 2007 Suite on Windows Vista with an Administrator Account but UAC (User Account Control) activated, the SelfRegister.bat does not work by default due to increased security on Windows Vista. To run the registration bat files, you must Right-click the batch file and select Run as administrator. You will be asked for your permission to run the script with elevated permissions.

LICENSING SDL TRADOS 2007 PRODUCTS

When you purchase and download your SDL Trados 2007 software from the Internet, you download your product license at the same time. SDL Trados 2007 products use the following license types:

C Product Activation Code

C Softkey license file - Floating

C Softkey license file - Node Locked.

Each type is described in detail below.

Product Activation Code – The Default Licensing Method

This type of license is used for SDL Trados 2007 Freelance and SDL Trados 2007 Professional. The license takes the form of an activation code downloaded from the SDL licensing website when you purchase the software. Once the software is installed on your computer you must activate the product by licensing the product on that computer. You do this by connecting to the SDL licensing website from the computer and activating the product using the code. This is referred to as ‘online activation’.

You connect to the SDL licensing website using the SDL Product Activation wizard. The wizard is displayed automatically at the end of product installation. Until you have activated the product online, the wizard will also appear every time you start the software.

Once you have activated the product online, the license is valid for the machine from which you performed the activation and no further action is required. If you have to move the software to a different computer you must return the license and then activate the product online from the new computer, using the same activation code. Licenses are returned using SDL License Manager.

NOTED

C Floating licenses can also be used with SDL Trados 2007 Professional.

C SDL Trados Freelance users can use the same activation code to activate the same product on two computers as long as the computers are not on the same network.

SDL TRADOS 2007 INSTALLATION GUIDE

L icens ing SDL Trados 2007 Products 2

SDL License Manager

SDL License Manager is installed on your computer as part of SDL Trados 2007. You use the SDL License Manager to:

C View your current licenses.

C Return a license (because you are moving the software to a different machine).

C Connect to the SDL licensing website and activate a product online.

NOTED

If you cannot return a license because the machine where you activated the product has crashed and cannot be restarted, you must contact product support.

30 Day Trial Users

By special arrangement you can download the software without purchasing a license and use the software free of charge for 30 days. After 30 days, if you have not purchased a valid license and activated the product online, the software will either cease to function or it will switch to demo mode. To find out more about demo mode restrictions, go to page 2-36.

Each time you open the product the SDL Product Activation wizard is displayed. When you decide to purchase a license, you can do it from here.

Group Activation Code for SDL Trados 2007 Professional Users

Your organization may have a single online activation code to be used by all users. Each user who installs the software activates the product online using the same activation code. The number of times the code can be used is limited to the number of licenses that were purchased.

NOTED

Shared activation codes behave in exactly the same way as individual codes. For example, the code may be returned from one computer and then activated on a different computer.

2-4

Floating Softkey License File

In this scenario the number of licenses purchased is smaller than the number of users who have installed the software. When a user opens the software, they are automatically allocated one of the available licenses. When they close the software, the license they were using is immediately made available to other users.

Floating licenses are managed by FLEXlm License Server. It automatically allocates the correct license to a user when they open the SDL Trados 2007 software and takes the license back again when the user closes the application. Users connect to the License Server through the local network.

Floating licenses are issued as a single (*.lic) license file which is stored on the server computer where FLEXlm License Server is installed. Users have to set up their personal computer to access the server where the floating licenses are being managed. They do this using SDL License Manager. See “Managing Floating License Files” on page 30. for more information.

SDL Trados 2007 server tools use floating licenses.

NOTED

If you open an application and no floating license is available, the application will operate in demo mode. To find out more about demo mode restrictions, go to page 2-36.

Node Locked Softkey License File

A node locked softkey license takes the form of a license (*.lic) file and licenses the use of one SDL Trados 2007 application on one computer.

In special circumstances, by prior agreement with SDL, a node locked softkey license may also be given to a user instead of an online activation code.

For server applications, node locked softkey license files are downloaded from the SDL licensing website and placed on the server computer where FLEXlm License Server is to be installed (or is already installed). Server application licenses are managed by FLEXlm License Server. FLEXlm License Server is managed and maintained by your administrator.

DOWNLOADING SDL TRADOS 2007 LICENSE FILES AND PRODUCT ACTIVATION CODES

SDL Trados 2007 product activation codes and license files are generated in and downloaded from the My Licenses page at the following address: http://oos.sdl.com/myaccount. This is the web address of SDL’s Customer Center.

C Product activation codes are copied to the clipboard of your computer and then used to activate your product.

C Personal license files (*.lic) are downloaded to your computer where they are managed using SDL License Manager.

C License files for server tools and floating licenses are downloaded to the computer where FLEXlm License Server is to be installed. We recommend that you download the license before installing FLEXlm as you will be asked for the license file location during the FLEXlm installation process.

NOTED

If you do not have the license file when you install FLEXlm License Server, you can install FLEXlm and add the license location later. However, this is a more involved process that requires you to stop and restart the FLEXlm License Server service.

When you purchase SDL Trados 2007 software, you are sent an email listing the items that you have purchased. This email also contains the URL for the SDL product licensing website. Your login details for the licensing website are sent to you in a separate email when your account is created on the licensing website.

When you later purchase additional licenses or an upgrade, the email confirming your purchase will not contain the URL.

MANAGING FLOATING LICENSE FILES

This section describes how to:

C Borrow a floating license so that you can work with the SDL Trados 2007 product when you are not connected to the network.

C Return a borrowed floating license early.

C Switch to a different floating license server.

Borrowing a Floating License

If you need to use an SDL Trados product when not connected to the network you can ‘borrow’ a floating license. For example, you may want to use an SDL Trados product on a laptop computer when visiting a customer site.

When you borrow a license you specify how long you will need the license and it remains valid on your computer until the period you specified expires. When this period of time expires you do not have to return the license: it simply ceases to be valid for your copy of the software. At the time the licence ceases to be valid for you, it automatically becomes available for other users to borrow.

If you finish working with the SDL Trados software before the end of the loan period, you can choose to return the license early.

OVERVIEW

This chapter explains the system requirements for installing and running SDL Trados 2007 Suite and how to install SDL Trados 2007 Suite - Professional.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

This section outlines the system requirements for installing and running SDL Trados 2007 Suite -Professional.

Hardware

C The minimum specification for using SDL Trados 2007 Suite - Professional is a PC with a 1 GHz Pentium IV or higher compatible processor and at least 512 MB RAM. We recommend 1024 MB.

C 300 MB of available disk space is required.

C A mouse or similar pointing device is required.

Platforms

SDL Trados 2007 Suite - Professional runs on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

On all Windows versions, we recommend that you remove support for any non-Western languages you do not work with from both the Windows Regional Options and the Microsoft Office Language Settings. We highly recommend only using the languages that you are translating into and from in both Windows and Word. For more information on how to achieve this, see the Windows and Word online help systems.

Your display settings should be set to at least 256 colours (in Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings).

Companion Software Required by SDL Trados 2007 Suite - Professional

This is the non-SDL software that you need to have installed on your machine in order for SDL Trados 2007 Suite - Professional to function fully.

C Microsoft Word 2000 or later. Translator's Workbench requires this for processing Word or RTF-based files.

C Microsoft Excel 2000 or later. This is required for processing Excel files.

C Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 or later. This is required for processing PowerPoint files.

C Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher is required to use the HTML-based help systems that ship with SDL Trados 2007 Suite. If you do not already have Internet Explorer 6, you will need to download it from the Microsoft website.

Language Support

C In general, language support in SDL Trados 2007 Professional corresponds to the language support that is installed on your system. For more information about specific support for bi-directional and double-byte character set (DBCS) languages in Translator’s Workbench, see the online help.

C We recommend using a localized version of Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista for translating to and from non-western, bi-directional and DBCS languages.

C If you are working with Hindi or other Indic languages, we highly recommend that you use the Arial Unicode MS font. This font ships with Microsoft Office. For more information on this font, refer to the Microsoft website and knowledge base.

Upgrading from an Earlier Version of SDL Trados

It is possible to choose not to install the components marked with an asterisk (*). This would be a Custom installation.

The latest Word template file is automatically installed with Translator’s Workbench. The templates are: TRADOS8.dot for Word 2000-2003 and TRADOS8.dotm for Word 2007. This template is necessary to enable the SDL Trados - Word editing interface.

There is a further SDL Trados component, SDL Trados Desktop SDK. This component is not included in a default installation as it is a software developer tool not a translation tool.

Other Software Installed with SDL Trados 2007 Suite

In addition to SDL Trados 2007 Suite components, other software is included in the installation program. This additional software is required either by the installation program itself or by SDL Trados 2007 Suite - Professional. You will probably have some of these additional software components on your computer already as they are used by many software applications:

C Install Script Engine 10.5

C Windows Installer 3.1

C Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0.

C Java Runtime Engine (such as version JRE1.5.0_10) is required to translate RC, OpenOffice, Java Properties and InDesign CS2 (INX) files. If Java Runtime Engine is not installed on your machine, the SDL Trados 2007 Suite installer program will install it for you.

SDL Passolo Essential A localization tool for text resource translation and software localization. Text resources are the text components of a software that are displayed on screen. SDL Passolo Essential includes all main functions needed for the localization of software, however there are some restrictions compared to the Professional and Team Editons of the software. For more information, refer to the SDL Passolo Getting Started Guide and SDL Passolo Handbook included with SDL Passolo Essential. You can access this documentation from the Start view in SDL Trados Synergy or through the Windows Start menu under All Programs > SDL Passolo > Manuals.

OTHER INSTALLATION OPTIONS

Administrators may wish to use these alternative methods for distributing and installing SDL Trados 2007 Suite.

Administrative Installation

In an administrative installation, the system administrator copies the installer files to a location that is always available, typically a network drive. This means that the setup files are permanently accessible to anyone who wants to install SDL Trados 2007 Suite or modify or repair their SDL Trados 2007 Suite installation.

To perform an administrative installation of SDL Trados 2007 Suite:

1 From the Start menu, choose Run.

In the Run dialog box, use the following syntax to specify the location of the SDL Trados 2007 Suite setup files if you downloaded the installer:

Msiexec /a "c:\path to msi\SDL Trados 2007.msi".

If you are using a product CD, insert the SDL Trados 2007 Suite product CD into the computer’s CD-ROM drive and use the following syntax in the Run dialog box to specify the location of the SDL Trados 2007 Suite setup files:

Msiexec /a "d:\path to msi\SDL Trados 2007.msi".

C Msiexec is the Windows installer service.

C /a denotes an administrative installation.

C c:\ is the hard drive, d:\ is the CD-ROM drive.

2 Click OK to start the installation wizard.

3 On the Network Location screen, specify the target location for the copy you make of the setup files.

4 Click Install to create the copy in the specified location.

5 When the process is complete, click Finish to close the installation wizard.

NOTED

This procedure only copies the SDL Trados 2007 Suite setup files to the specified location; it does not constitute an actual installation. Use the setup files to run the installation wizard and install, modify or repair the software in the usual way.

Logging an Installation

It is possible to log an installation to a TXT or LOG file. This log file provides the installation results and is useful for troubleshooting any installation problems.

To log an installation:

1 From the Start menu on your computer, choose Run. In the Run dialog box, use the following syntax to specify the location and file name of your setup files and the installation log file:

Msiexec /I "c:\path to msi\myinstall.msi" /l*v

"c:\path to logfile\mylog.txt"

C Msiexec is the Windows installer service.

C /i denotes the installation request.

C /l*v denotes a verbose log file.

To customize the installation log file, substitute /l*v with the alternatives below:

C /le denotes a log file containing errors only.

C /lw denotes a log file containing warnings only.

C /lp+ denotes a log file containing properties only.

2 Click OK to start the installation and create the installation log file.

NOTED

When you run Setup.exe it automatically creates a log file.

Silent Installation

To perform a silent installation:

1 Select Run from the Start menu.

Access Restrictions

Access restrictions to certain SDL Trados 2007 Suite files and folders may apply to some users on Windows Vista, Windows 2000 or Windows XP systems. The files that are most likely to be subject to access restrictions are sample files.

Sample

The default installation location for SDL Trados 2007 sample files is:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\SDL

Trados\Samples

This folder is accessible from the Start menu. Select Programs > SDL International > SDL Trados 2007 > Trados > Samples.

To use the sample files a user must have read/write access to the Samples subfolder. Alternatively, the sample files can be copied to a location where the user does have read/write access.

The default installation location for SDL Passolo Essential sample files is:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Passolo 2007\Samples

This folder is accessible from the Start menu. Select Programs > SDL Passolo 2007 > Samples.

Sharing a Computer

In SDL Trados 2007, all tag (.ini) and filter settings files (.xml) are stored in the folder \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SDL International\Filters on Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems and in the \ProgramData\SDL International\Filters folder on Windows Vista. You must have read/write access to the appropriate folder in order to create filters and work with XML/HTML/SGML files.

The owner of a computer is automatically granted read/write access to these folders, however, any other user sharing the machine is not. To avoid Access Denied messages appearing in TagEditor on closing XML/HTML/SGML files or on saving filter settings, it is necessary to give all users using a machine read/write access to the Filters folder.

NOTED

On localized operating systems the folder structure partly uses names matching the language of the operating system. For example, on a German Windows XP system the folder is called \Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Anwendungsdaten\SDL International\Filters.
