SDL Researchers Nominated for Prestigious European Inventor Award and Recognized for

Creating a New Market

SDLs Daniel Marcu, Kevin Knight and William Wong recognized as pioneers in machine translation by European

Patent Office

SDL(LSE: SDL) today announced that three leading researchers from SDL have been nominated for the European

Inventor Award 2013 for their contributions to technological, social and economic progress. The award is

presented by theEuropean Patent Office (EPO)to outstanding inventors in five categories.SDL ResearchersDaniel

Marcu, Kevin Knight and William Wong have been selected as finalists, alongside co-inventor Philipp Koehn, in the

Research category. Building on a statistical approach to machine translation, the team invented an advanced

method ofautomated computer translationwhich improves translation quality and increases the speed of

translation output. The team invented the phrase-based joint probability model for statistical machine

translation while working together at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute.

This revolutionary approach makes some of the most obscure languages in the world understandable to anyonewith Internet access, said Benot Battistelli, President of the EPO. Today most of the big names in Internet

translation, including Google and Microsoft, have integrated this model into general-purpose translation services

such as Google Translate and Bing.

It is an honor to be a finalist for the European Inventor Award, said Daniel Marcu, Chief Science Officer at SDL.
