2013 – Glancing Back while Moving Forward The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G) County Library took measured, purposeful steps in 2013, with every footfall mindful of the goals of our new Strategic Plan – to engage the public, enhance our service delivery, build internal capacity and secure sustainable funding.

With our new Communications and Marketing Librarian in position, we successfully built stronger bridges with our five long-standing Friends of the Library groups, and are working with a sixth group. We also recognized that we needed to be more visible in our communities, and we worked with local governments to establish improved exterior signage at all our branches.

The slate of Board members consists of four Councillors and

three public representatives.

2013 Annual Report

Our Partners

The spring of 2013 saw the launch of our Outreach initiative, the “Pop Up Library”, at local fairs and community events. This was an important step in getting the Library to places where people like to gather and showing them what we have to offer. We talked to hundreds of people, and registered new members who either didn’t know about the County Library or who hadn’t realized the range of our services.

Finally, the Library sought to train staff in 2013 to better help the public in accessing our e-resources and to recommend “good reads” to our patrons, by offering them various professional development opportunities with colleagues from other library systems. Being part of the greater library community opened us to new ideas and stimulated several new initiatives at SD&G, most of which continue today.

Message from the SD&G County Library Board by Bill McGimpsey, Chair; Deputy Mayor of North Stormont; Warden of the

United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, 2013

Greetings to all! 2013 started off with exciting news that the new South Dundas Municipal Centre would include a modern Library facility, replacing the existing branch located in the lower part of the Morrisburg Arena. It would be accessible and be co-located with the St. Lawrence Medical Centre and Municipal offices. Municipalities are recognizing that modern libraries can be an integral part of the community.

The Library Board was divided on how to create efficiencies in the system through branch consolidations, and consequently decided to defer any consolidations for this term.

An alternate delivery system was piloted with great success in Williamsburg when that branch closed because the building in which it was located was re-purposed. The Library was able to deliver books and other materials to patrons a fraction of the cost of a fully operating branch. A big thank you to Whitteker Meats in Williamsburg for their participation. The success of this alternate system will enable the Library to deliver materials to patrons in underserviced areas or whenever a branch is closed for a prolonged period of time.

A new “Donor Program” was implemented which gives greater recognition to financial contributions of over $500. Thank you to all that donated to the SD&G County Library in 2013.

Our Manager of Library Services, Karen Franklin, and our Communications and Marketing Librarian, Erika Heesen, have both completed a full year with the system, and have made amazing strides in their respective roles. Greater communications with the public and new strategic alliances with other organizations are just a few of their successes.

The Board was able to complete its budget with 0% increase for 2013, and is always looking at ways to better service the public, while respecting the dollars it has to work with.

I look forward to the continued success of the SD&G County Library.
