2.1 Application and FunctionSunny Design makes the set-up of PV systems of all capacities as easy as possible in just three steps.1. PV generator definition

Entry of location, module type, generator alignment as well as PV system output/number ofmodules.

    2. Inverter type specificationData entry wizard to aid choice of specific features or the immediate start of the inverter.

    3. EvaluationAutomatic configuration testing, establishing performance features over an operating year.

The results can be printed as a report, the content and form of which can be edited to a great extent.

Features: Inverter database with every SMA inverter (Sunny Boy, Sunny Mini Central, Sunny Central). PV module database of currently popular PV modules Location database with high-resolution actual radiation and meteorological data (no

    statistical data).System support via:

    - (Multi-)String inverter- central inverter

Support of PV generators with:- any tilt angle- any azimuth angle- single-axis tracking

Testing operating data and preparation of results as a system check list and graph. Energy analysis over an operating year. Cable dimensioning support. Freely designable result report.

2.2 What's New?The selection list of the inverter types is generated according to country. Only the inverters that areapproved for the country in which the system is located are listed. This function can also be switchedoff. The location display for the printout of results can be changed as defined by the user. The Chinese language feature has been added to Sunny Design.

2.3 Scope of DeliverySunny Design can be downloaded from the SMA web server or ordered as a CD.

    2.4 Accessories

A range of weather databases are available for download on the SMA web server. They can beinstalled retrospectively to check the design of PV systems for other countries.

2.5 IdentificationThe window shown at right can be opened using the[Help] menu and the [Info] menu item. The followinginformation can be seen in the three windows:1. Program information

Program version and supporting institutes2. Database information

Type and version of the modules installed, e. g.inverter, weather data etc.

4.1 PV systemThis page contains data specifications for the PVgenerator. The location, module type and number ofmodules are minimum required entries.

4.1.1 LocationPlease enter the location of the PV system. SunnyDesign calculates all other values based on thelocation and the weather data.

PV Module TemperaturesThis allows you to make detailed entries on the moduletemperature. Sunny Design suggests values based on the weather data.

4.1.2 ModulesSelect the manufacturer and module type to be used in this project. In generator size, you can enter either the number of PV modules or the required peak output.Modules entered manually are identified with *User* as an ending after the manufacturer's name.Modules entered manually and modules provided by SMA which have the same names in thedatabase after an update are identified with * as the ending.

New ModuleYou can enter modules which are not in the Sunny Design database manually. To do so, click and enter all required technical specifications of the module. Sunny Design requires allvalues marked with * to work with the modules. If you do not have all values required, pleasecontact the manufacturer of the module.

Edit ModuleThis button is only displayed when you select a module you created yourself. You can change themodule data or delete the module on the page which opens.

4.1.3 Tilt AngleThe Sunny Design sets the ideal tilt angle automatically after you select the location. If the actualangle is different, click the checkbox before to remove the tick. You can then set the tiltangle manually.

4.1.4 AzimuthThe Sunny Design sets the ideal azimuth automatically after you select the location. If the actualangle is different, you can set the azimuth manually.

If the PV modules track the sun, click the checkbox before , so that a tick is displayedthere.

4.2 InverterThis page allows you to select the inverter for the PVgenerator set and enter details on wiring.

    4.2.1 Select Inverters

Select an inverter from the list. The selection list of theinverters is country-specific. Only the inverters that areapproved for the country in which the system is locatedare listed. You can restrict the list of inverters displayed byincluding or excluding certain types of inverters usingthe button. If you place a checkmark in front of inverters that are not approved for the country in which the system is located are also listed.

4.2.2 System ConfigurationThis shows the current system configuration. This allows you to increase the number of inverters and change the grid voltage.

Sunny Design rounds the number of modules to a range compatible for the inverter. Thisis not necessarily the best solution.

4.2.3 PV/Inverter Check ListThe Sunny Design software indicates via a colored bar whether the combination is permitted inaccordance with the PV generator and inverter selected.

Sunny Design marks the values on the check list with four different symbols.

4.2.4 Multi-String InverterIf you have selected a Multi-String inverter, you can configure the strings individually. You can alsoset different PV generators and the alignment for individual strings separately on the Multi-Stringentry page.

4.2.5 CablingIf the checkbox is activated, Sunny Design automatically suggests thecable length and the cable cross-section. If this is the case, manual entries are overwritten. The checkbox is deactivated automatically if entries are made manually and the changes areretained.

GreenThe system is designed well. The combination is permitted.

YellowThe inverter is too large for the PV generator, or vice versa. Thiscan cause yield losses. The combination is permitted.

RedThe PV generator or inverter exceeds critical limit values.

    Green the value is OK.

Blue the value was adjusted by Sunny Design.

Yellow the value is too low or too high, yield will be lost.

Red the value endangers the inverter or the PV generator.

Switch from the system overview (top right) to the Help view for specific solutions for thewarnings.

    4.3 Result

This page shows a summary of all settings made todate. You can also create individual result reportsusing the , and buttons.

4.3.1 PV GeneratorThis shows the details on the PV generator.

4.3.2 InverterThis shows the details on the inverter.

4.3.3 Compatibility CheckIf the compatibility check displays a yellow curve, return to the inverter page and correct thecorresponding data if necessary. See section 4.2.3 "PV/Inverter Check List" (Page 11).

4.3.4 Estimated System PerformanceThis provides an overview of the estimated system performance.

Please note the VDE instructions for cable properties.

Yield calculations are estimates based on mathematical models. The real energy yieldwill differ from these calculations.
