Members of the Oral Health Committee gathered at Sec- ond District headquarters to select the winners of the poster contest. is task proved to be chal- lenging because of the many creative entries received in each category, which ranged from Pre-K to 12 th Grade. Entries were judged by cate- gory and recipients of 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd prize were selected from over 500 entries re- ceived from both Brooklyn and Staten Island schools. e winners received award certificates and Barnes and Noble giſt cards. It is worthy to note that the Second District Dental 2013 Children’s Dental Health Month Poster Contest Society (SDDS) sponsors its own poster contest every year. Since talent within our district has always been out- standing and the response to CDHM Contest Judges Juana Luster, Angela De Bartolo, Phyllis our contests overwhelming, the SDDS decided a few years ago to hold its own competition. This contest is separate from state and MLMIC Declares Dividend for Its Dentists in 2013 Vice President, Dental The NYSDA-MLMIC Program for Dentist Pro- fessional Liability Insur- ance (Program) recently announced the payment of a dividend by Medical Lia- bility Insurance Company (MLMIC) to its’ dentist policyholders in 2013. MLMIC’s Board of Direc- tors approved the NYSDA- MLMIC Underwriting/ Claims Committee’s rec- ommendation to return 5% of the premium in effect on May 1, 2013 to their den- tist policy- holders of record as of that date. MLMIC’s dentists re- ceived the dividend checks in late May. When the New York State Dental Association endorsed Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company as its professional liability carrier, generated by the Program would be returned to the policy- holders. That com- mitment has been honored whenever possible. In fact, the 2013 dividend represents dividend payments, and the twelfth Program dividend overall. Including the 2013 divi- dend, MLMIC has returned over $10 Million to its den- tist policyholders over the history of the Program. No other dental professional li- ability carrier in New York State can make that state- ment. The payment of dividends when fiscally prudent is just one of the things that sets the NYSDA-MLMIC Program for Professional Li- ability Insurance apart from - gram controlled, directed and guided by your dental peers, the NYSDA-MLMIC Underwriting/Claims Com- mittee. To meetthe demand for trained dental assistants, the dental society co-sponsors this course to assist interested students with a desire to preparefor and work in this exciting career field. PRIDE OF MEMBERSHIPI have been a member of the SecondDistrict Dental Society (SDDS), a com-ponent of the New York State Dental

days in private practice. I have livedthrough many presidents of the Soci-ety and of the United States. I havelived through the numerous trials and

the various governmental agenciesthat have attempted to weaken ourprofession. I am a Past President ofthe SDDS. I have also been a mem-ber of the Board for years, as well asbeing a member of the OrganizationCommittee of the Greater New YorkDental Meeting.I have always felt that it is impor-tant to give back to our profession.Dentistry has allowed me to supportmy family, practice endodontics andteach at a local hospital. I have beenfortunate.I have made good friends. I havemet leaders of our profession fromthroughout the country as well asthose members who are out thereproviding dental care to the peopleof Brooklyn and Staten Island. Thelatter group are the real heroes of ourprofession. I am proud to be a memberof this group and I wear my SDDS pinwith the knowledge that it representsan outstanding cadre of professionals.Then came Sandy. Within days,our SDDS spearheaded the relief

staff and our Executive Director, Mr.Hackett, were there with advice andsympathy. But more importantly, theywere able to assure those suffering

At the end of Janu-ary, Newsday, themost read newspa-per on Long Island,published a storyabout a dentist whohad been arraignedon second degreereckless endanger-ment charges fol-lowing his arrest bylocal police respond-ing to a complaintthat he was “under

-cohol.” Regardlessof the aftermath ofthe criminal pro-ceedings againsthim, this dentistwill have to face hisstaff, his patientsand his family. Practicing while

alcohol or drugs is professional mis-conduct. Whatever the outcome of thisparticular case, there surely is going

The specific advantages and disadvantages of performing CPR withinthe dental operatory will be discussed. This program utilizes hands-on practice sessionsfor all participants. Topics to be covered will include heart attacks and strokes (signs andsymptoms), sudden cardiac arrest/defibrillation, airway obstruction (choking), respira-tory emergencies, anaphylactic reactions, emergency drug kits, and more.
