1.0 APPLICATIONS

1.1 PURPOSE: DBI/SALA Davit arm and mounting base combinations areintended to be used as part of a work positioning, personnel riding,personal fall arrest, material handling, or rescue system. The davit arm andmounting base are intended to act as a support structure or anchorage forthese systems.

1.2 LIMITATIONS: Consider the following application limitations before usingthis equipment:

A. CAPACITY: The maximum working load for this product is 350 lbs.

B. APPLICATIONS: Specific models of davit arms are rated for differentapplication. See Table 1 for acceptable applications for each modeldavit arm.

C. FREE FALL: Personal fall arrest systems must be rigged to limit thefree fall to six feet (according to ANSI Z359.1, or five feet according toANSI A10.14).

D. FALL CLEARANCE: Ensure that adequate clearance exists in your fallpath to avoid striking an object. The amount of clearance required isdependent upon the type of connecting subsystem and anchorage

location. See subsystem manufacturer’s instructions for moreinformation.

E. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Use of this equipment in areas whereenvironmental hazards exist may require additional precautions to limitthe possibility of injury to the user or damage to the equipment.Hazards may include, but are not limited to; high heat, causticchemicals, corrosive environments, high voltage power lines,explosive or toxic gases, moving machinery, and sharp edges.

F. TRAINING: This equipment is intended to be installed and used bypersons trained in its correct application and use.

1.3 APPLICABLE STANDARDS: Refer to applicable standards, includingANSI Z359.1, ANSI A10.14, ANSI Z117.1, and local, state, and federal(OSHA 26 CFR 1910.146, 1910.66, 1926.500) requirements for moreinformation on the application of this equipment.

2.0 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

2.1 COMPATIBILITY OF COMPONENTS AND SUBSYSTEMS: This equipmentis designed for use with DBI/SALA approved components and subsystems.Substitutions or replacements made with non-approved components orsubsystems may be incompatible, and may jeopardize the safety andreliability of the complete system.

2.2 COMPATIBILITY OF CONNECTORS: Connectors (hooks, carabiners,D-rings) must support at least 5,000 lbs. Connectors must be compatible insize, shape, and strength. Non-compatible connectors may unintentionallydisengage (roll-out). Do not use non-locking connectors with thisequipment.

2.3 STRUCTURAL STRENGTH: The structure or mounting surface to whichthis equipment is installed must meet the strengths specified below for theapplication selected:

A. Fall Arrest: The structure selected for personal fall arrest applicationsmust be capable of sustaining static loads applied in the directionspermitted by the personal fall arrest system of at least: 3,600 lbs. withcertification of a qualified person; or 5,000 lbs. without certification. SeeANSI Z359.1 for certification definition. When more than one personalfall arrest system is attached to a structure, the strengths stated abovemust be met at each location independently.

From OSHA 1926.500 and 1910.66: Anchorages used for attachmentof personal fall arrest systems shall be independent of any anchoragebeing used to support or suspend platforms, and capable of supportingat least 5,000 lbs. per user attached, or be designed, installed, andused as part of a complete personal fall arrest system which maintainsa safety factor of at least two, and is under the supervision of aqualified person.

B. Work Positioning: The structure to which the work positioning systemis attached must sustain static loads applied in the directions permittedby the work positioning system of at least 3,000 lbs., or twice thepotential impact load, whichever is greater. See OSHA 1926.502. Whenmore than one work positioning system is attached to an anchorage,the strengths stated above must be multiplied by the number of workpositioning systems attached to the anchorage.

C. Personnel Riding: The structure selected for personnel ridingapplications must be capable of sustaining static loads applied in thedirections permitted by the personnel riding system of at least 2,500lbs. Each davit arm and base installation must be independentlycapable of sustaining this load.

D. Material Handling: The structure selected for material handlingapplications must be capable of sustaining static loads applied in thedirections permitted by the material handling system of at least 2,500lbs. Each davit arm and base installation must be independentlycapable of sustaining this load.

E. Rescue: The structure selected for rescue applications must becapable of sustaining static loads applied in the directions permitted bythe rescue system of at least 2,500 lbs. Each davit arm and baseinstallation must be independently capable of sustaining this load.

WARNING: Davit arms and mounting bases that are installed for personnelriding, material handling, or rescue applications only, must be labeled as such toprevent the system from being used for fall arrest or work positioningapplications, which require greater structural strength.

3.0 OPERATION AND USE

WARNING: Do not alter or intentionally misuse this equipment. Consult DBI/SALAwhen using this equipment in combination with components or subsystems otherthan those described in this manual. Some subsystem and componentcombinations may interfere with the operation of this equipment. Use cautionwhen using this equipment around moving machinery, electrical hazards,chemical hazards, and sharp edges.

WARNING: Consult your doctor if there is reason to doubt your fitness to safelyabsorb the shock from a fall arrest. Age and fitness seriously affect a worker'sability to withstand falls. Pregnant women or minors must not use this equipment.

3.1 BEFORE EACH USE of this equipment, carefully inspect it according tosection 5.0 of this manual.

3.2 PLAN your system before using this equipment. Consider all factors thatwill affect your safety during use of this equipment. Consider the followingpoints when planning your system:

A. HAZARD EVALUATION: An evaluation of job site hazards isnecessary before starting work. Consult applicable OSHA and industry

standards for guidelines and regulatory requirements on issues suchas; confined space entry, personal fall arrest systems, and single pointadjustable scaffolds.

B. WORK SITE GEOMETRY: The installation and use of the davit armand mounting base must be consistent with the geometricrequirements specified in sections 3.4 and 3.5. When suspendingworking lines from the davit arm, check for obstructions or sharp edgesin the work path. Avoid working where the user may swing and hit anobject, or where lines may cross or tangle with that of another worker.

C. BACK-UP FALL ARREST SYSTEM: When using the davit arm andmounting base as a support for suspending a worker at a work level, orfor personnel riding applications, a back-up fall arrest system isrequired. See OSHA 29 CFR 1910.28 and 1926.451. The davit arm hasan auxiliary connection point for a back-up personal fall arrest system.

D. RESCUE: In the event of an accident with injuries or other medicalemergency, it is critical to have a rescue system in place. Responsetime often plays an important role in the survival of an injured worker.Users of this equipment must be trained in emergency procedures.

3.3 REQUIREMENTS FOR PERSONAL FALL ARREST SYSTEMS: Personalfall arrest systems used with the davit arm and base typically include; fullbody harness, connecting subsystem (self retracting lifeline or lifeline andrope grab), and necessary hardware to connect the system. Personal fallarrest systems used with this davit arm and mounting base must meetapplicable OSHA requirements. Personal fall arrest systems that use a fullbody harness must limit the fall arrest forces to 1,800 lbs., and arrest the fallwithin 42 inches. Body belts, unless part of a full body harness, are notrecommended for use with this equipment.

3.4 INSTALLATION OF MOUNTING BASES:

A. FIXED BASE: See Figure 4. The fixed base davit bases are for generalpurpose use for most applications. The fixed base davit bases areattached to concrete (8002040, 8004032) or other structural materials(8002050, 8004031). A minimum of six equally spaced 1/2 inchdiameter fasteners are required to attach the davit base to the structure.See Table 2 for fastener load requirements. DBI/SALA recommendsthat all fixed base installations be done under the supervision of aqualified person.

B. WALL MOUNT: See Figure 5. The 8004273 and 8004274 davit basesare used when bolting the davit arm to a wall or other vertical surface.Use twelve 1/2 inch diameter fasteners to attach the davit base to thestructure. See Table 3 for fastener load requirements. The 8004230 and8004235 davit bases are dimensionally the same, but are welded tothe structure. See below for information on welded installations.

C. SHELF MOUNT: See Figure 6. The 8003773 davit base is used when ashelf-type mounting on a wall or other vertical surface is required. Use

the shelf mount with davit base models 8002050 or 8004031. Use six1/2 inch diameter fasteners to attach the davit base to the structure.See Table 4 for fastener load requirements.

D. POST MOUNT: See Figure 7. The 8004392 davit base is used when asingle post can be inserted into a hole in the concrete or otherhorizontal surface. A hole (3-1/16" in diameter) that is at least 6-1/4"deep is required for the base to set into. A 1/2" bolt secures the post tothe horizontal surface. See Table 5 for fastener load requirements.

E. LOAD REQUIREMENTS: See section 2.3 for application types andsupporting structure load requirements.

F. GEOMETRIC REQUIREMENTS: The davit arm and mounting basemust be mounted on a level surface. Position the mounting base so thedavit arm will be directly over the work area. Do not position the davitarm where the worker will have to swing under the davit arm to reachthe work area. Avoid positioning the davit arm where the working linemay abrade against sharp edges when in use.

G. WELDED INSTALLATIONS: When welding a mounting base to thestructure DBI/SALA recommends that welding is done by a certifiedwelder. If areas of the plating on the davit base are removed bywelding, paint to prevent corrosion.

H. MASONRY ANCHORS: Install masonry anchors used with themounting base installation according to manufacturer’s instructions.

3.5 INSTALLATION OF DAVIT ARM TO FIXED BASE: See Figure 8. Place thelower leg of the davit arm over the davit base post and lower onto the base.Lift upper arm into position and secure with detent pin. Attach equipment todavit arm according to section 3.7 of this manual. Rotate arm over workarea and lock in place with locking lever on lower leg of the davit arm.

3.6 INSTALLATION OF PORTABLE DAVIT BASE AND DAVIT ARM:

A. LOAD REQUIREMENTS: See section 2.3 for application types andsupporting structure load requirements.

B. DAVIT ARM REQUIREMENTS: The portable base can only be usedwith davit arms with a reach of 24" or less.

C. GEOMETRIC REQUIREMENTS: Select a level area near the workopening that will provide firm footing for the portable base. See table 6.Position the portable base so the arm will be directly over the work area.

Do not position the davit arm where the worker will have to swing underthe davit arm to reach the work area. Avoid positioning the davit armwhere the working line may abrade against sharp edges when in use.

WARNING: Never allow the working line to extend outside the legs of the portablebase, tipping of the base could occur.

D. PORTABLE BASE SET-UP: See Figure 9.

Step 1. Remove leg detent pins andspread legs to fully extendedposition. Reinstall detent pins.

Step 2. Position base over work openingso the working line is directlyover the work area when thedavit arm is in place.

Step 3. Ensure footing is solid undereach base foot. See section 2.3

and Table 1 for loadrequirements.

Step 4. Level the base byadjusting the base feet.

Step 5. Install the davit arm byinserting the lower leg intothe base socket. Lift upperdavit arm into place andlock with detent pin.

Step 6. Check the davit arm forposition above the workarea. Adjust base positionas required.

IMPORTANT: All mounting bases mustbe positioned so the davit arm will bedirectly over the work area. The davitarm must be positioned to ensure asafe working area for the user.

3.7 CONNECTING EQUIPMENT TOTHE DAVIT ARM: The davit arm isequipped with three systemconnection points. Two connectionpoints are quick-mount brackets forthe Salalift winch or self retractinglifeline. The third connection point isan auxiliary connection for otherDBI/SALA systems.

WINCH MOUNTING: Mount the winch on the top quick-mount bracket asshown in Figure 10. the winch cable must be routed over the sheave at theend of the arm.

SELF RETRACTING LIFELINE MOUNTING: Mount the self retractinglifeline on the top or bottom quick-mount bracket as shown in Figure 11.Use the bottom quick-mount bracket when the top bracket is occupied by awinch or other equipment. When mounting to the bottom bracket, a snatchblock pulley must be connected to the auxiliary connection point. Route theself retracting lifeline cable through the snatch block pulley as shown inFigure 11. Do not use a self retracting lifeline on the bottom bracket withouta snatch block pulley. Do not route the self retracting lifeline cable throughthe davit arm sheave when the selfretracting lifeline is mounted on thebottom bracket. The self retractinglifeline can be hung from the auxiliaryconnection point using a self lockingcarabiner as shown in Figure 12. Whenconnecting other equipment to theauxiliary connection point DBI/SALArecommends using a self locking hookor carabiner.

IMPORTANT: Knots must not be used forload bearing end terminations (see ANSIZ359.1). Some knots reduce strength of thelifeline by fifty percent or more.

4.0 TRAINING

4.1 It is the responsibility of the user andpurchaser of this equipment to be

trained in the correct care and use of this equipment. The user andpurchaser must be aware of the operating characteristics, application limits,and consequences of improper use of this equipment.

IMPORTANT: Training must be conducted without exposing the trainee to a fallhazard. Training should be repeated on a periodic basis.

5.0 INSPECTION

5.1 FREQUENCY:

• Before Each Use: Inspect according to steps listed in section 5.2 and 5.3.

• Monthly: A formal inspection of the davit arm and base should be doneby a competent person other than the user. See sections 5.2 and 5.3.Record inspection results in the inspection and maintenance log insection 9.0 of this manual.

• After a Fall Arrest: Inspect entire davit arm and base according tosection 5.3.

WARNING: If the davit arm and mounting base have been subjected to fall arrestforces, they must be immediately removed from service and inspected. If the davitarm or mounting base fails inspection remove from service and destroy, orcontact DBI/SALA for repair or replacement.

IMPORTANT: Extreme working conditions (harsh environments, prolonged use)may require increasing the frequency of inspections.

5.2 DAVIT ARM INSPECTION:

Step 1. Inspect all bolts and nuts to ensure they are secure. Check formissing, substituted, or altered parts.

Step 2. Upper arm and lower leg on davit arm must be straight and free ofcracks, dents, distortion, or any other damage.

Step 3. Locking lever on davit arm must work prevent arm from turningwhen locked.

Step 4. Upper arm on davit arm must collapse properly and can be lockedinto place with detent pin.

Step 5. Inspect sheave at end of davit arm. Sheave must be clean androtate freely.

Step 6. Auxiliary fall arrest anchorage point must be free of cracks, dents,distortion, or any other damage.

Step 7. All bolts on mounting base must be secure and not damaged.Ensure davit base legs on portable davit base extend and close

properly, and detent pins lock properly. Ensure adjustable feet onportable davit base can move freely. Ensure davit base is free ofcracks, dents, distortion, or any other damage.

Step 8. Inspect entire system for corrosion which may weaken or otherwiseaffect parts in their function.

Step 9. All labels must be present and fully legible. See section 8.0.

Step 10. Record results of inspection in the inspection and maintenance login section 9.0 of this manual.

Step 11. Inspect each system component in accordance to manufacturer’sinstructions.

5.3 If inspection reveals an unsafe or defective condition, remove the davit armand mounting base from service and destroy, or contact an authorizedservice center for repair.

NOTE: Only DBI/SALA or parties authorized in writing may make repairs to thisequipment.

6.0 MAINTENANCE, SERVICING, STORAGE

6.1 Periodically clean the exterior of the davit arm and base using water andmild detergent. Clean labels as required.

6.2 Replacement parts and additional maintenance and servicing proceduresmust be completed by an authorized service center. An authorization andreturn number must be issued by DBI/SALA.

6.3 Clean and store system components according to manufacturer’sinstructions.

6.4 Store this equipment in a clean and dry environment out of direct sunlight.Avoid areas with chemical vapors. Inspect equipment after any period ofextended storage.

WARRANTY

Equipment offered by DBI/SALA is warranted against factory defects inworkmanship and materials for a period of two years from date of installationor use by the owner, provided that this period shall not exceed two yearsfrom date of shipment. Upon notice in writing, DBI/SALA will promptlyrepair or replace all defective items. DBI/SALA reserves the right to electto have any defective item returned to its plant for inspection before makinga repair or replacement. This warranty does not cover equipment damagesresulting from abuse, damage in transit, or other damage beyond the controlof DBI/SALA. This warranty applies only to the original purchaser and isthe only one applicable to our products, and is in lieu of all other warranties,expressed or implied.
