Dear SDA families and friends,
On behalf of the San Dieguito Academy Foundation (SDAF) Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to provide you with our annual report for the fiscal year June 2009 – June 2010. We accomplished a great deal thanks to the support of parents, alumni and our local community. We pulled together during one of the most difficult economic times in recent history and made a significant positive impact to the school, its students and staff.
Increased Income
Since its establishment in 1997, SDAF has supported the unique culture and quality programs at SDA by generating financial resources and promoting active parental and community involvement. In terms of revenue from both fundraising events and contributions to SDAF, it was a good year. Fundraising income totaled more than $170,000 and contributions to our general fund surpassed $86,000. These were significant increases from the prior year. On the fundraising side, we saw significant increases in income generated by our annual Mustang Magic dinner dance and auction, as well as the Cabaret Night (sponsored by the Theater Council) and Casino Night (hosted by the Athletic Council). We are very grateful to the increased number of families who contributed to SDAF through our
2
annual appeal. We are thrilled that 44 percent of families donated (up from 33 percent the prior year), and hope to see continued involvement from more and more of our SDA families.
Funded Projects
The increased income was critical last year, since SDAF once again stepped in to fill the gap as the school’s basic needs far outpaced the funding available from the district and state. SDAF donations to the school included:
• $40,000 to all departments for basic materials and supplies;
• $25,000 in grant funding to the Science Department to support the new bio-‐tech curriculum;
• $10,200 to the Science Department for lab supplies, consumable materials and test software;
• $40,000 in corporate funding to support the Robotics program;
• $ 7,000 to support the Writing Lab Tutor Program;
• $ 6,400 for a professional technician for the theater; and
• $ 5,000 to the Music Department for the maintenance and purchase of sheet music and musical instruments.

Gifts and Grants
In addition to the SDA families who generously supported SDAF, gifts from alumni and local corporations, as well as grants from government and private foundations, had a large impact. For example, the Donald C. and Elizabeth M. Dickinson Foundation has been a supporter for some time. Last year, the Foundation’s grant funded supplies to support our Bio-‐Tech
Program’s laboratory courses, the maintenance of high-‐tech lab equipment, as well as Bio-‐Tech training and certification for teachers and CPR training for students. Another long-‐term supporter, the City of Encinitas and the Mizel Family Foundation Community Grant Program, helped support
our Culinary Arts Program and allowed us to purchase much needed equipment and supplies for the remodeled classroom facilities.
In addition to direct grants from many local corporations, we received many generous matching donations. For this, we are very grateful to the SDA parents who took the time to process the grant requests through their employers.
Helping Students Succeed
As the umbrella organization over all the SDA parent groups, SDAF coordinates the volunteer and fundraising efforts of its member councils: Athletics, Music, Theater Arts, Academic (which supports Speech & Debate, Mustang Minds, Robotics and Young Leaders in Health Care), Student Support Services and Grad Nite. Hundreds of dedicated parents work tirelessly through these councils to directly help our students succeed at what they do best. The results speak for themselves:
Our Robotics Team had its most successful season to date. At the San
4
Diego Regional Competition, Team Paradox received the prestigious Engineering Inspiration Award, for its mentoring of teams from the FIRST Lego League. This award enabled the team to participate in the FRC World Championships in Atlanta in April 2010. The team is very grateful to the financial and mentoring support from its sponsors, including SAIC, ViaSat, Qualcomm, Battelle, Asymtek, NyPro and the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.
Student Support Services promotes the efforts of students, parents, counselors, administrators, staff and the community in working together to develop programs that address the issues of the SDA community. In 2009, it launched one of its most successful programs — free, two-‐hour Start Smart driving safety classes for students, offered in partnership with the California Highway Patrol, the Encinitas Sheriff's office, and San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth.
During 2009-‐2010, the Speech and Debate Team won the Jack Howe Invitational Team Sweepstakes Award for the third consecutive year. In

addition, five students competed at the State Championship and two went on to the Nationals.
Breaking Ground
Another example of how your donations make a difference can’t be missed if you’ve been on campus recently. That is the construction of our new, state-‐of-‐the-‐art Performing Arts Center (PAC). Construction crews broke ground in June 2010 and we expect it to be open to students in Fall 2011. The 16,000-‐square-‐foot facility will incorporate theater and music wings to serve the needs of both drama and music students. The theater wing will include a 280-‐seat indoor theater, classrooms, practice areas, dressing rooms, a scenery lab, a 500-‐seat outdoor stage with sound reflectors, and storage space for props and sets. The music wing will feature a 3,700-‐square-‐foot rehearsal hall, six soundproof practice rooms, a music library, an instrument storage room and a recording arts classroom. The PAC is funded in part by a Foundation capital campaign initiated in 2006. We continue to fundraise, as we strive to meet our commitment to the district to pay for the PAC’s furniture and equipment. Several naming opportunities are available for those interested in donating $1,000 or more, while gifts of any size will be matched by a generous challenge grant provided by the Timmstrom Family Fund.
6
The Outlook Ahead
Looking forward, given the continued tough economic times, we do not expect most of our families to be able to donate at previous levels. With overall contributions trending lower, the Board is trying to find creative ways to make do with less. Given SDA’s record enrollment and the continued reductions in state school funding, we fight an uphill battle. But we hold steadfast to our goal, which is to provide students with an enriched academic experience by funding programs the school would not otherwise have.
Sincerely, Abby Fisher President, San Dieguito Academy Foundation
