Dear FCA members:Summer has arrived and the season for weekly car events begins.Recently we had a successful well attended tech session at the Auto Gallery.

All cars were carefully inspected by their expert technicians and each owner wasgiven a detailed report. Now is the time to have the work done and have your carsready for all the upcoming events. Many thanks to Harry Gray and Tony Schwartzfor your kind generosity.

Two weeks ago I attended the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal (our home-town). While sitting in the grandstand wearing my Ferrari team shirt, a womancame over to me and handed me a decal and a pin. She explained that she is with a group called “Friends of Ferrari” that raises money for charity from corporations.I think that this is something that our FCA group would be interested in doing. She will send me the information and I will bring it to the Board meeting for discussion.

This past Saturday night, several of our board members attended theMeguiar’s “Man of the Year Award” at the Kodak Theatre. Corky Coker was therecipient and “The Fab Four” perfomed a collection of Beatles songs.

Sunday was the annual Father’s Day car show on Rodeo Drive. It is always an enjoyable event with many spectacular cars, especially Ferraris, many owned by fellow club members who took home several great trophies. BRAVO!

Coming up is our annual picnic at the Petersen Automotive Museum on July 25th featuring 40 years of the 275 and 330GT and honoring 50 years ofFerrari in North America. In August is the Monterey weekend followed by theFCA National Event at Quail Lodge and Laguna Seca.

We hope to see you all there.

The Ortega RunBy Tom Brockmiller Photos by author

Hi there FCA members, thinking of those of youthat did not join us on the Ettinger Fun Run in April.I thought you might be interested in how it all went, rain andall. It went splendidly thank you. The support by the memberswas fantastic, 95 sign ups in all. First off, I want to make itquite clear that I have a tough enough time remembering myown name let alone all the members and their marvelousFerraris that showed up on that day, you’re not being slightedin the least by me not including your names and cars in thiswrite up.

It was a great day in spite of the rain. The first stop on ourtour was Grand Touring Classics in Long Beach just south ofthe Long Beach Airport. Our host was Norbert Hofer, ownerof this magnificent Ferrari service center. The shop was spot-

less, loaded with outstanding cars in for repairs and serviceamidst many lifts and parts bins. It was as professional inappearance as any dealership’s service department. After fill-ing up on a continental style breakfast we all blasted off in therain to our second stop.

Up the road a piece was a private collection of cars andmemorabilia of Mr. Kenny Tucker. His hospitality was out-standing and you just had to be there to take in all that was inhis collection. It included his house that was filled to therafters with collectables plus a rather large doll collection. Wefilled up on fresh popped corn and we were off to our thirdstop.

The route to our third stop included some drive time onthe freeways which is always exciting and unpredictable.Thankfully the timing was such that most if not all the gangbangers were busy cleaning there weapons, the drunks werejust getting seated and the cops were picking out the freshest

pastry. The route took us through some great country roads,no side walks or street lamps to dodge through the turns.

We all arrived at Boyd Coddington’s hot rod shop. Boydmade his mark in history many years ago by designing andhand-building some of the world’s most famous and recog-nized hot rods. His facility began with a fantastic lookingshowroom of incredible looking hot rods that were all for saleto the public. We were given full access to his custom wheelmanufacturing area and the custom car building shop that wasas clean as a surgeon’s hat. The shop was filled with cars indifferent stages of completion. It was an outstanding opportu-nity to see first hand the facility where his TV series is filmedfor the discovery channel. After filling our eyes with hot rodcandy we were off to our forth stop on the tour.

The Dunkel Brothers, Peter and David graciously openedtheir Museum so that we could enjoy all that they have collected over the years. The collection was diverse to say theleast. It included a magnificent ’30s wooden Chris Craft boat, race cars, a Porsche tractor that had been restored to the 9’s,motorcycles, models, Ferrari collectables and motoring mem-orabilia. It was a hot stop no doubt. By this time we werebeginning to feel faint from hunger and we were getting anx-

ious to get to our last and fifth stop which included lunch. The last stop on our tour took us to the private residence

of Larry Johnson which covered two acres of beautifully mani-cured grounds. Tucked away in the rear yard were Larry’s 6car garage buildings housing a collection of cars, old car-tooned graphic lunch boxes and show cases filled with memo-rabilia. The large garage gave off a feeling of being on thestreet as you were looking at a mural depicting a Studebakerdealership next to a Ford showroom. The place was just theright touch to finish off a car related tour.

Now to lunch, I feel myself salivating like Pavloff’s dogjust thinking about that incredibly tasty barbequed brisket ofbeef. It was so good that it would make a vegetarian thinktwice. I went through several scenarios trying to figure out aplan on how to hijack the leftovers. The rain turned itself offand the day ended with a wonderful club tour. There was a lit-tle snag in the directions, but that just goes to show you whyLewis and Clark never bothered to ask me to go with them. Atour like this or any club tour for that matter takes a lot ofenergy and time, but the member turn out and participation istotally the reward for the effort. So let me say here and now,THANK YOU ALL, YOU MADE MY DAY. SF

On Saturday June 5th approximately forty Ferraris showed up at the Auto Gallery in WoodlandHills as guests of owners Tony Schwartz and Harry Gray.

Gary Kawakami the Ferrari service manager had arranged for his technicians to inspect FCA club member’s cars freeof charge. The other purpose was to show off the new Ferrari service center complete with 10 service lifts. Each carwas put up on a lift and the owner was invited to join the technicians in the inspection area. Afterwards the owner wasgiven a written report of any items that might need attention.

David Freed of Premier Motorsport was handing out samples of touch up paint and there was also a paintless dentremoval specialist that took care of at least one Ferrari that had a fender ding.

The Auto Gallery hosted a delicious Italian lunch for all club members whether they had a car being inspected or justalong for the ride.

This was a very successful event and once again proved that the Auto Gallery wants to support our club andbecome the primary service center for our beloved Ferraris.

In closing I would like to acknowledge the Ferrari technicians Eric, Rafi, Dustin and Kenny who now work in a newspacious well equipped shop with all the latest diagnostic equipment to satisfy the most finicky of Ferrari owners. SF

We had a good showing of Ferraris for this showheld on April 18, 2004. Among all the classic, custom, hotrods and motorcycles were a good selection of vendors. Theshowroom had some nice cars in it: the Ferrari of Washington 360ALMS series champion car, the Petersen Auto Museum’sMagnum PI 308 from the TV show, the ex-Don Ricardo MercedesTarga Florio, a 250 Europa from Symbolic Motors and, of course, the new Mercedes SLR and Maybach. Even some “MonsterGarage” creations of Jesse James were on display.

Thanks to all the FCA members who showed their cars! SF

While there is no disputing that

Michael Schumacher is the greatest

Ferrari driver and the best Grand Prix

driver of all time, there were many

before him who are legends of

Formula 1 racing. One such driver

and my favorite is Alain Prost.

Known as “il professore” Prostjoined Ferrari already crowned WorldChampion in 1990 and brought with himthe coveted Numero Uno on the car. AtMcLaren the year before, he beat histeammate Ayrton Senna to becomeCampione del Mondo in the last race atSuzuka. Watching Prost race a car waslike watching poetry in motion. He wasalways smooth and had beautiful car con-trol. He always portrayed himself as agentleman and had very few exhibitionsof emotional outbursts. In 1989, the FIAchanged the Formula 1 rules banningturbo-charging and Ferrari produced an all-new design to contest the WorldChampionship by John Barnard sporting aV-12 normally aspirated engine producingmore than 600 horsepower. These carswere also the first to use the now com-mon semi automatic paddle shifters locat-ed aft of the steering wheel. I considerthese cars to be the most beautiful GPcars along with the 312 T, 312 T2 and T3of the mid-seventies. Nigel Mansel andGerhard Berger ran car numbers 27 and28 respectively. Unfortunately, the combi-nation of Prost, Senna and McLarenHonda was unbeatable in 1989. I will neverforget the beautiful scream these V12semitted when driven in anger I personallyheard at Phoenix three years in a row. They were the best sounding Ferrariengines ever made.

In the late 1980’s at the height of theeconomic bubble and buoyed by a strongYen, Japan was enjoying a massive pros-perity with humongous gains in the stockmarket and real estate values and every-

one was blessed with extra cash. Thevalue of any model Ferrari had climbed toan all time high. Art Corporation located inOsaka was the largest moving companyin Japan. Headed by a determined andcaring founder Chiyono Terada, a diminu-tive lady looking very much like a typicalJapanese doll, Art0123 as it was known, revolutionized the way moving wasdefined in Japan by providing an efficientsystem of virtually allowing the customerto just sit and watch as everything in hishabitat was packed, labeled, loaded andmoved the way a woman would want herbelongings handled. Gone were the mus-cular, smelly sweaty men in t-shirts,replaced by clean, young boys and girlswho had been educated in discipline andmanners. This enabled Art0123 tobecome a very profitable business. Mrs.Terada’s husband was a car freak andwith the excess cash decided to form acar dealership called ArtSports. Animpressive all glass tower dominated thepremises that not only dealt in new andused contemporary exotic cars but classicsports cars as well. While the young ener-getic staff was enthusiastic, none of themknew anything about classic sports cars.At that time ArtSports was the biggestimporters of gray market sports cars inJapan. Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches,Mercedes, McLarens, Bugattis and all oftheir tuner variants were parked side-by-side in their beautiful showroom.

Meanwhile the burst of the bubblemeant the end for the so-called overnightbrokers who jumped on the bandwagonduring the eighties. As you may remem-

ber in those days we all miss, you could-n’t go wrong buying any old Ferraribecause it was already more valuable thenext day. The young buyers of ArtSports, armed with literally millions of dollarswere swarmed over by these types, andthey were taken to the cleaners most ofthe time. With little experience they knewnothing about provenance, nothing aboutauthenticity, nothing about restorationand nothing about what the real value of agiven Ferrari should be. Case in point:They paid close to 3 million dollars for aF40 LM only to find that it was a replica. Some of you may remember my storycalled The Worst 100 Point ConcoursRestored Daytona in the World in a previ-ous issue of Sempre Ferrari or The FinishLine. That was their car.

In the early nineties, Ferrari of NorthAmerica President and CEO Gian LuigiLonginotti Buitoni convinced LucaCordero Di Montezemolo, Chairman andCEO of Ferrari Spa. and the powers thatbe in Maranello that Ferrari dealers in theUnited States were not up to par with theimage that Ferrari wanted to project anddecided to launch a factory dealershipwith everything under their control. Andso was conceived Ferrari of San Franciscolocated on the north side of the bayacross the Golden Gate Bridge in MillValley. Standing next to a lagoon, the vastglass and stucco buildings did exude aMediterranean influence. But one couldeasily see that the proposed budget forthe completion of this monument wasblown away by the fine details demandedby the Italian consortium. To pay for this

big hole in their accounting statement,Ferrari decided to sell some gems fromtheir racing stable. Prominently displayedin their new factory-owned show roomwere two recent Formula One race cars, a1989 F1 640 S/N 113 driven by GerhardBerger and a 1990 F1 641/2 S/N 121 dri-ven by Alain Prost. Together with a turboera F1 car driven by the late MicheleAlboreto, an F40 LM said to be the lastconstructed shared the showroom withnew Ferraris of the period.

The announcement of the newlyopened showroom and the advertisementfor the sale of these cars were shared inchoice enthusiast magazines. Being a fanof Alain Prost and the 640 series F1 race-car, I called ArtSports and immediatelygot the attention of the young man head-ing their classic car division. Mr. K. (hewill remain anonymous) was a Ferrari fanand his passion and enthusiasm for clas-sic Ferraris were next to none. The onlyproblem was that his knowledge wasbased mostly on information he readabout in books, magazines and watchingvideos. The scary thing was that he ranthe classic sports car division and had theauthority of buying anything he wanted.Naturally the choice was quite cantedtoward his personal taste. When I con-tacted Ferrari of San Francisco, theyinformed me of a Grand Opening partythe next week and together withArtSports were invited to attend thisevent on the spot. Mr. K. arrived in LosAngeles and we flew up to San Francisco.Being aware that we probably would haveno time to check into our hotel before thereception I made sure I was dressed tothe hilt so that I wouldn’t blow my coverthat I was from Los Angeles and lookinsulting or disrespectful to the SanFrancisco crowd. We drove straight to

Mill Valley and toured the fabulous dealer-ship. The architecture was something thatwould look at home in Toscana. The salesrep there informed us that Gian Luigiwould be attending the event thatevening. We got to see, feel and touchthese cars as well as sit in them. Wewere introduced to Gianfranco Fantuzzi, the chief mechanic assigned to AlainProst. He had been reassigned to SanFrancisco and came from the factory withthe two F1 cars. Gianfranco directed themechanics who carefully removed thebody covers revealed the beautiful V-12Formula 1 engine, compact transmissionand the suspension componentry whichwere huge secrets in their active days. There in front of our eyes were mechani-cal masterpieces of the highest techno-logical tour-de-force clothed in the mostsexy formula car bodies. As I sat in thiscar and squeezed the steering wheel Irealized that Alain Prost had a much small-er butt than I did but the suede racingseat signed by Prost and made bySchedoni felt comfortable indeed. I imag-ined myself speeding through CurvaParabolica at Monza onto the straight-away past the grandstands. This was asclose as I can get and I was actually sit-ting in the seat. This car came in 2nd atthe Belgian GP, 2nd at the Italian GP, 3rdat the Portuguese GP, 1st at the SpanishGP prior to the Japanese GP where AlainProst’s Championship fight came to anend and 3rd at the Australian GP whereSenna was crowned the WorldChampion. While Mr. K. was ogling thecars I pulled the sales rep over and dis-cussed prices. Being just a sales rep. butproud of his wares, he was unable to giveus any break. Furthermore, he informedme that Ferrari of North America wouldnot pay an outside broker any commis-

sion, period. With that in mind and enjoy-ing a nice cup of espresso we awaitedthe arrival of Gian Luigi. For those whodon’t know it Gian Luigi comes from thefamous Buitoni pasta family which manu-factures all kinds of pasta and is definitelyone of the nobility of Italy.

Mr. K. asked questions such aswhether or not the engines were original,to which Gianfranco answered nobecause many engines were blown up onthe bench, during testing, during qualify-ing or during a race. But the cars werefully refurbished by the factory prior todelivery. We were also assured thesewere not T-cars and actual cars that weredriven. While we waited we were privi-leged to see the other cars that wereavailable for sale. There was a superblyrestored one-off 212 Export Coupe forsale and parked nearby. In a separatebuilding, all the new cars were on displayand true to Ferrari standard, the attentionto detail and refinement of not just thedisplay but the quality of the architectureincluding hardware and lighting fixtureswere second to none. At this time I askedMr. K. if he was interested in the Prostcar. He said he was very interested buthe didn’t know if he could sell such a carin Japan. I reminded him of the signifi-cance this car had at Suzuka and withserious fans of both Prost and AyrtonSenna in Japan, displaying this car in theirshowroom in the middle of the newFerraris would surely draw attention andlead to more sales. I further suggestedrunning a tape of this car in action on avideo to hype up the showroom. Withthat his eyes gleamed and soon there-after Gian Luigi entered the showroom. At Suzuka in 1990, Ayrton Senna had 78points and Alain Prost 71. If Prost won hewould have 81 points and if Senna came

in 5th or less, Prost would have gone onto win the Championship. Therefore likethe previous year, all eyes were on thisrace but in the first corner, Senna whohad pole position and Prost who was sec-ond collided and went off course, thusawarding Senna the Championship. Onthis year the tenth anniversary of Senna’sunfortunate death at Imola, I hate to bringit up that Senna later admitted to purpose-ly colliding with Prost to ensure his win.

Gian Luigi was immaculately dressedin a fine Italian suit with a matching tieand kerchief neatly tucked in his breastpocket. After the greetings and hand-shake, Gian Luigi and the sales repexcused themselves and returned to askme where we were with the possiblesale. I informed them that Mr. K. wasfrom Osaka and because of that he wouldask for a discount and so a best priceshould be offered. Not surprisingly theythen insisted that the price offered wasalready the lowest possible. I thenexcused myself to discuss the matterwith Mr. K. Of course, Mr. K. said hewouldn’t buy without a discount, but inthe same breath he told me he was alsointerested in the Berger car as well as theF40LM or three big cars. Now that I had abargaining chip in my hand, I went over toGian Luigi and the sales rep and askedagain for a best price for all three cars.Their eyebrows indicated a smile and dol-lar signs were flashing in their mind, butthe suave Gian Luigi never winced onceand instructed the sales rep to go calcu-late the offer. We all went upstairs to theshowroom with wooden floors displayingclassic production Ferraris. While we wait-ed, I discussed the hope of the return ofFerrari Championship in Formula Onewith Gian Luigi.

At this time guests arrived for theGrand Opening party and Gian Luigiexcused himself to mingle with the invit-ed guests as well as dignitaries and thepress. We also went down, joined the

crowd and enjoyed the superb cocktailparty with a live quintet performing classi-cal favorites. I was sampling a superbChardonnay when Mr. K.’s jet lag caughtup with him so we went back up stairsand no sooner did he sit down in a sofahe was cutting z’s. Downstairs, Gian Luigiwas on the microphone addressing theguests and welcoming them to their newfacility. The sales rep came out of hisoffice and waived to Gian Luigi downbelow. Soon we could hear his footstepscoming up the stairs and the two wentbehind the doors of the office. I glancedat the still sleeping Mr. K. and shook hisshoulder. The two emerged from theoffice and the sales rep handed me thenew offer. I showed it to the half awakeMr. K. and he told me to ask for more dis-count and promptly went back to sleep. Idiscussed the issue and Gian Luigiwalked up and was visibly upset. I amsure that from his standpoint, he was notgoing to sell these precious gems tosome dealer in Japan at a discount price. After some intense moments of negotiat-ing back and forth, I decided to discussmy commission. I explained to them thateither they include me in the deal or therejust won’t be any because I have totalcontrol of what Mr. K. will or will not buy, which was the truth. It was now time fordinner and Gian Luigi invited us down-stairs to join him at his table but becauseMr. K. was in no shape to even sit upstraight I cordially declined his offer andexcused ourselves. We left with theunderstanding that we would continueour discussion the next day as Mr. K.needed to sleep over the offer.

We checked into the hotel and head-ed to a Japanese restaurant because Mr.K. ate only Japanese food. While wesavored sashimi and warm sake I askedhim if Mr. Terada would agree to this pur-chase, he told me he wasn’t going to tellhim. The next morning we returned toFerrari of San Francisco and Mr. K. signed

the contract worth a over two million dol-lars. The cars came with starters andspare tires and wheels but nothing else. The ensuing weeks were spent arrangingfor the payment and delivery of the carswhich included another go around of pay-ment schedules that were not in line withthe purchase agreement, no doubt theresult of Mr. K. having to explain his pur-chase to Mr. Terada. I spent considerabletime suppressing the ire of Gian Luigiwho expected this payment to lessen thecost of the fabulous San Francisco dealer-ship. When the cars arrived in Osaka, they created quite a sensation andArtSports enjoyed a steady stream of curi-ous car aficionados and ultimately helpedin the sales of their cars. There were evendemonstration runs in Suzuka and at theprivate circuit in Aida where the GrandPrix of the Pacific was run. I continued tofield questions such as what is the blackbutton on the lower left side of the instru-ment panel below the red button. Eachtime I would call Gianfranco Fantuzzi andhis answer would be that the configura-tion changed from race to race and loca-tions of switches and its purpose havebeen long forgotten. The most entertain-ing question was if there was an ownersmanual for these cars. I am delighted tohave been involved in such an importanttransaction involving my favorite FerrariGP cars. SF

FCA Tune-Up Drive

On Sunday, September 19, members of the FCA-SW will once again enjoy a wonderful morning of motor-ing through the beautiful and varied California landscape north of Los Angeles. Last year’s outing greeted us withblue sunny skies and crisp air. An interesting and scenic back road route has been selected where you can enjoy the beauty of thelandscape along with the sound of your favorite Italian machinery. You’ll get a chance to see a few trees, and enjoy a touch of fall color.

Our destination will be the lovely Restaurant Le Chene, a quaint historic structure built largely of natural river rocks. At one time this building housed a gas station and auto repair shop, but now there is little trace of this former activity. In recentyears the building has been transformed into a lovely country restaurant serving fine French cuisine. Find a safe spot in the ampleoff street parking area, and then stroll inside for a refreshing beverage and tempting Brunch in the French style. Relax and spendsome time enjoying the food, the natural surroundings, and the company of fellow Ferrari owners. Here is a chance for a briefescape from the pressures of city life. So join us for a spirited drive to keep your car healthy. You’ll like it to!

Sign ups: To sign up for this event, fill out the form shown below and send it to the club office (address below). Directions to the starting point will be emailed to all participants approximately one week before the event. The cost is a mere$24.00 per person.

Legislation to Repeal Old Car EmissionsExemption Reintroduced in California State Assembly AB 2683 amendedThe bill replaces the rolling 30-year exemption with a fixed exemption for all pre-1976 vehicles. The rolling exemptionis replaced by a provision requiring the permanent testing of all POST-1976 vehicles not pre-1976, as reported in theSempre Ferrari, issue 5/6, 2004.

Legislation to Allow Illegal Aliens to be Able to Apply ForCalifornia Driver’s LicensesSB 1160

The Sacramento Bee and the San Jose Mercury News editorialized in favor of Gil Cedillio's SB 1160. It was alsorevealed that the proponents of giving licenses to illegal aliens have spent money on extensive polling and focusgroups in their attempt to pass this new bill.

Don't be fooled by the big media companies and politicians about this bill. It rewards illegal behavior by givinggovernment-issued identification documents to those who break the law.

One pillar of this bill allows identification cards from foreign consulates to be used to qualify for a driver's license.Below is a link to a study from the Center for Immigration Studies that outlines how these cards are abused, and howthey encourage illegal immigration.

http://www.cis.org/articles/2003/matricularelease.html

Contrary to public professions, this bill is not about making our roads and highways safer. This bill is about get-ting 2 million illegal aliens registered to vote in our elections.

An analysis of the bill reveals that there are no safeguards to protect our voting security. Voter registration formsrequire a driver's license number or Social Security Number. The bill requires the illegal alien applicant to sign a state-ment that driver's licenses can't be used for voting. But it does not require the Secretary of State to eliminate thesepotential illegal voters from the voter file. We will simply have to rely on the goodwill of applicants who are alreadybreaking the law.

Please, tell the Governor to oppose SB 1160.Governor SchwarzeneggerState Capitol BuildingSacramento, CA 95814Phone: 916-445-2841Fax: 916-445-4633email: [email protected].
