Changes is Sandwell’s ‘home grown’ successful suite of Parenting Programmes. CHANGES ANTENATAL programme has been developed with funding from Sandwell’s Public Health team to complement the existing materials. Drawing on expertise from colleagues in health, the five-week universal antenatal programme has been developed to deliver key health messages. The programme includes five taught sessions; four sessions before baby is born: Our growing baby This initial session covers how your baby is growing and developing whilst discussing what you can do to have a healthy pregnancy. Looking after us This session explores the impact a newborn baby can have on day-to-day life, and discusses the support network that is around for new parents. The birth Delivered by a qualified midwife, this session covers key information about labour and birth Caring for our baby In this final hands-on practical session, essential newborn baby care skills are discussed and demonstrated. The first few weeksThis session provides a chance to catch-up with other new mums and dads, discuss your personal birthing experience and how you are finding life with your new baby.

Each parent is provided with a colourful, handy, A5 parent’s handbook. As well as being used as a workbook throughout the five taught sessions it also contains information, reference and signposting sections on the following topics:

My pregnancy notesIs a week-be-week diary for parents to jot down notes about their pregnancy. It also contains some useful reminders.

Fit for lifeThis section contains important information about how to keep healthy during and after pregnancy, and covers both emotional and physical health.

Money mattersCovering lots of money saving tips, essential signposting information, and what you may be entitled to claim.

Signposting and SupportAn easy-to-access A-Z list of useful services.

CHANGES ANTENATAL courses will be delivered by children’s centre staff as part of the new 6 town family offer at core venues:

Cape Hill Children’s Centre, Smethwick Greets Green Children’s Centre, West Bromwich Springfield Children’s Centre, Rowley Tipton Children’s Centre, Tipton

Women will be given an information leaflet on how to book on a CHANGES ANTENATAL course by their midwife at their 12-week booking-in appointment.
