How Can Bible Texts Be Remembered?

    * "As you read the Bible, mark selected texts that you want to remember, or copy them on cardsand put these cards where you will see them daily. As you try to memorize the verses, meditateon them and make use of them. Do not try to memorize too many at once, perhaps only one ortwo each week." (Do You Remember - How can Bible texts be remembered - w95 8/15 p31)From suggestion (12) in Box on p16,17 w95 5/1

    * Grouping a few Bible texts into subjects or categories makes it easier for our brain to remember. From the above list of scriptures (GEN to REV) you can select several verses that you like andgroup them into subjects or categories of your own.

"Categorize similar concepts or related ideas. ...Also, divide the information into manageablechunks of not more than five to seven items." (g 2/09 p27)

    Helping Children Memorize Bible Verses

Andrews mother had helped him to memorize over 80 Bible verses word for word by the time hewas six years of age.

It wasnt a race, she says. Our pace was very relaxed and natural. In fact, when someonefinally asked, How many verses does he know? I had to stop and add them up. Andrew enjoyedmastering new verses very much, and the list grew quickly. But how did she do it? What books did she read first? Is there a trick to it?(See: When Memorizing Comes Easy - g87 7/22 p26,27)

Are You Strengthened by Gods Word?

WHEN faced with challenges, how do you cope? In Jesus case, recalling an appropriatescripture helped him to face Satans challenges. (Matthew 4:1-11) Likewise, when King Davidfaced personal trials, he was strengthened by Gods Word. He said: When my disquietingthoughts became many inside of me, your own consolations began to fondle my soul. - Psalm

    94:19.

In a similar manner, recalling a favorite scripture can console us or give us strength when we facechallenges. For example, Rex, who is now 89 years of age, has been a full-time evangelizer since1931. Yet, he says: I often felt inadequate when given a special assignment in the ministry. Howdid he cope? I recalled my favorite scripture, Proverbs 3:5, which says: Trust in Jehovah with allyour heart and do not lean upon your own understanding. Recalling and applying this scripturehelped me to carry out my assignments successfully.

Even young ones benefit from having a favorite scripture. Six-year-old Jack says that his favoritescripture is Matthew 24:14. This scripture motivates him to go preaching with his parents. Hesays: I like going witnessing every Saturday with my mum, dad, and sister.

Like Jesus, do you sometimes face direct challenges to your faith? Then Philippians 4:13 maybecome one of your favorite scriptures. Like King David, do you suffer from disquietingthoughts? Then recalling Philippians 4:6,7 may help you to cope.

Do you sometimes worry that your service to God is in vain? Then remembering 1 Corinthians15:58 will give you strength.

By memorizing appropriate scriptures, we allow Gods Word to exert power in our lives. (Hebrews4:12) Such favorite scriptures can provide us with both strength and comfort. - Romans 15:4.(w04 5/1 p32)

Memorizing and Repeating ( see James 1:22-25; 2 Peter 1:12)

Do You Have a Problem Remembering Scriptures?

Here is a list of some common, encouraging, and practical scriptures that you can use tocreate flash cards, discuss as a family, or try to memorize.

The first word or two, after the scripture, serves as a memory aid in remembering the restof the verse/s.

From the list below, you can choose the verses that you like and group them into subjects

or categories of your own for easier remembering.

    * You can delete, change, or add more to this list, of your own favorite verses of the Bible.

There is no searching out of hisunderstanding. He is giving to the tired one power; and to the onewithout dynamic energy he makes full might abound. Boys will both tireout and grow weary, and young men themselves will without fail stumble,31 but those who are hoping in Jehovah will regain power. They willmount up with wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary; theywill walk and not tire out.

But to all those to whom I shallsend you, you should go; and everything that I shall command you, youshould speak. Do not be afraid because of their faces, for I am withyou to deliver you, is the utterance of Jehovah. At that Jehovahthrust his hand out and caused it to touch my mouth. Then Jehovah saidto me: Here I have put my words in your mouth. See, I havecommissioned you this day to be over the nations and over the kingdoms,in order to uproot and to pull down and to destroy and to tear down, tobuild and to plant.

And they will be certain to fightagainst you, but they will not prevail against you, for I am withyou, is the utterance of Jehovah, to deliver you.

Matthew 5:3-12Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need, since the kingdom

of the heavens belongs to them. Happy are those who mourn, since theywill be comforted. Happy are the mild-tempered ones, since they willinherit the earth. Happy are those hungering and thirsting forrighteousness, since they will be filled. Happy are the merciful, since they will be shown mercy. Happy are the pure in heart, sincethey will see God. Happy are the peaceable, since they will be calledsons of God. Happy are those who have been persecuted forrighteousness sake, since the kingdom of the heavens belongs to them.Happy are YOU when people reproach YOU and persecute YOU and lyinglysay every sort of wicked thing against YOU for my sake. Rejoice andleap for joy, since YOUR reward is great in the heavens; for in thatway they persecuted the prophets prior to YOU.

Matthew 5:14-16YOU are the light of the world. A city cannot be hid when situated upona mountain. People light a lamp and set it, not under the measuringbasket, but upon the lampstand, and it shines upon all those in thehouse. Likewise let YOUR light shine before men, that they may see YOURfine works and give glory to YOUR Father who is in the heavens.

Matthew 5:27-30YOU heard that it was said, You must not commit adultery. But I sayto YOU that everyone that keeps on looking at a woman so as to have apassion for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If, now, that right eye of yours is making you stumble, tear it out andthrow it away from you. For it is more beneficial to you for one ofyour members to be lost to you than for your whole body to be pitched

into Gehenna. Also, if your right hand is making you stumble, cut itoff and throw it away from you. For it is more beneficial to you forone of your members to be lost than for your whole body to land inGehenna.

Matthew 6:19-21Stop storing up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth andrust consume, and where thieves break in and steal. Rather, store upfor yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rustconsumes, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where yourtreasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:25-32On this account I say to YOU: Stop being anxious about YOUR souls as towhat YOU will eat or what YOU will drink, or about YOUR bodies as towhat YOU will wear. Does not the soul mean more than food and the bodythan clothing? Observe intently the birds of heaven, because they donot sow seed or reap or gather into storehouses; still YOUR heavenlyFather feeds them. Are YOU not worth more than they are? Who of YOU bybeing anxious can add one cubit to his life span? Also, on the matterof clothing, why are YOU anxious? Take a lesson from the lilies of thefield, how they are growing; they do not toil, nor do they spin; but Isay to YOU that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one ofthese. If, now, God thus clothes the vegetation of the field, which ishere today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not muchrather clothe YOU, YOU with little faith? So never be anxious and say,What are we to eat? or, What are we to drink? or, What are we to

put on? For all these are the things the nations are eagerly pursuing. For YOUR heavenly Father knows YOU need all these things.

Matthew 6:33,34Keep on, then, seeking first the kingdom and his righteousness, and allthese other things will be added to YOU. So, never be anxious about thenext day, for the next day will have its own anxieties. Sufficient foreach day is its own badness.

Matthew 7:7-11Keep on asking, and it will be given YOU; keep on seeking, and YOU willfind; keep on knocking, and it will be opened to YOU. For everyoneasking receives, and everyone seeking finds, and to everyone knocking

it will be opened. Indeed, who is the man among YOU whom his son asksfor bread - he will not hand him a stone, will he? Or, perhaps, he willask for a fish - he will not hand him a serpent, will he? Therefore, ifYOU, although being wicked, know how to give good gifts to YOURchildren, how much more so will YOUR Father who is in the heavens givegood things to those asking him?

Matthew 10:29-31Do not two sparrows sell for a coin of small value? Yet not one of themwill fall to the ground without YOUR Fathers knowledge. But the veryhairs of YOUR head are all numbered. Therefore have no fear: YOU areworth more than many sparrows.

Matthew 11:28-30Come to me, all YOU who are toiling and loaded down, and I will refreshYOU. Take my yoke upon YOU and learn from me, for I am mild-tempered

Matthew 19:3-6Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife on every sort of ground? In reply he said: Did YOU not read that he who created them from thebeginning made them male and female and said, For this reason a manwill leave his father and his mother and will stick to his wife, andthe two will be one flesh? So that they are no longer two, but oneflesh. Therefore, what God has yoked together let no man put apart.

Matthew 22:37-39You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with yourwhole soul and with your whole mind. This is the greatest and firstcommandment. The second, like it, is this, You must love your neighboras yourself.

Romans 7:19-25For the good that I wish I do not do, but the bad that I do not wish iswhat I practice. If, now, what I do not wish is what I do, the oneworking it out is no longer I, but the sin dwelling in me. I find, then, this law in my case: that when I wish to do what is right, whatis bad is present with me. I really delight in the law of God accordingto the man I am within, but I behold in my members another law warringagainst the law of my mind and leading me captive to sins law that isin my members. Miserable man that I am! Who will rescue me from thebody undergoing this death? Thanks to God through Jesus Christ ourLord! So, then, with my mind I myself am a slave to Gods law, but withmy flesh to sins law.

1 Corinthians 1:27-29but God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put thewise men to shame; and God chose the weak things of the world, that hemight put the strong things to shame; and God chose the ignoble thingsof the world and the things looked down upon, the things that are not, that he might bring to nothing the things that are, in order that noflesh might boast in the sight of God.

1 Corinthians 3:5-9What, then, is Apollos? Yes, what is Paul? Ministers through whom YOUbecame believers, even as the Lord granted each one. I planted, Apolloswatered, but God kept making it grow; so that neither is he that plantsanything nor is he that waters, but God who makes it grow. Now he thatplants and he that waters are one, but each person will receive his ownreward according to his own labor. For we are Gods fellow workers. YOUpeople are Gods field under cultivation, Gods building.

1 Corinthians 3:12-15Now if anyone builds on the foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood materials, hay, stubble, each ones work will become manifest, forthe day will show it up, because it will be revealed by means of fire;and the fire itself will prove what sort of work each ones is. Ifanyones work that he has built on it remains, he will receive areward; if anyones work is burned up, he will suffer loss, but hehimself will be saved; yet, if so, it will be as through fire.

But Godis faithful, and he will not let YOU be tempted beyond what YOU canbear, but along with the temptation he will also make the way out inorder for YOU to be able to endure it.

It does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but rejoiceswith the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes allthings, endures all things. Love never fails.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father oftender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all ourtribulation, that we may be able to comfort those in any sort oftribulation through the comfort with which we ourselves are beingcomforted by God.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18Therefore we do not give up, but even if the man we are outside iswasting away, certainly the man we are inside is being renewed from dayto day. For though the tribulation is momentary and light, it works outfor us a glory that is of more and more surpassing weight and is

everlasting; while we keep our eyes, not on the things seen, but on thethings unseen. For the things seen are temporary, but the things unseenare everlasting.

    2 Corinthians 10:4,5For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but powerful by God foroverturning strongly entrenched things. For we are overturningreasonings and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge ofGod; and we are bringing every thought into captivity to make itobedient to the Christ;

2 Corinthians 12:7-10Therefore, that I might not feel overly exalted, there was given me athorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan, to keep slapping me, that Imight not be overly exalted. Most gladly, therefore, will I rather boast asrespects my weaknesses, that the power of the Christ may like a tentremain over me. Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, incases of need, in persecutions and difficulties, for Christ. For when Iam weak, then I am powerful.
