WELCOME TO SCREENPLAYAfter a packed year of cinema at Mareel, we felt that Screenplay would have to be extra special this year, and we think we’ve cracked it! There will be a celebration of Scottish film makers, digital meetings with Joshua Oppenheim (The Act of Killing) Toby Jones (Infamous), and David Morrissey (The Deal), visits from Wilma Smith (Behold Me Standing), Amy Hardie (The Edge of Dreaming), and Robert Rae (The Happy Lands), some lovely films for children, films exploring our mini-theme of ‘A Matter of Life & Death,’ a special Screenplay Film Quiz, some of Shetland’s own film makers’ work, and last, but certainly not least, Simon Thompson’s feature-length documentary, Reels on Wheels – the Hansel Story, a record of Shetland Arts’ Cultural Olympiad project from last year, A Hansel of Film – Shetland to Southampton and Back. Mark Kermode and Linda Ruth Williams have been curating Screenplay since it started in 2007. Mark and Linda love Shetland, and, inspired by their involvement in Screenplay, have set up a film festival in their own backyard in the New Forest. They also became ambassadors for Shetland Arts’ Cultural Olympiad project, A Hansel of Film – Shetland to Southampton and Back, and played an active and energetic part in promoting the project across the UK.

FUNDERS & SPONSORSAs funding for the arts grows ever more difficult to obtain, we are particularly grateful this year to our sponsors and supporters: Creative Scotland, Ronas Media, Arts and Business Scotland*, Shetland Jewellery, Shetland Film Club, Amnesty International Shetland, Singing Saturdays, Global Yell, UNISON and DJ Film and Sound – thank you all for ensuring that this year’s festival could happen.*The New Arts Sponsorship Grants scheme incentivises businesses to sponsor the arts in Scotland. It is funded by the Scottish Government and administered by Arts & Business Scotland. An arts organisation receiving an eligible business sponsorship can apply for £1 of funding for every £1 of sponsorship. The funding goes towards additional arts activity, for which the sponsor receives additional business benefits. www.aandbscotland.org.uk

A selkie is a mythical being that is a seal in water but human on land. If a selkie’s seal skin is stolen when in human form, it can no longer return to its true home in the sea.THE SELKIE’S LOVER is a modern-day version of an age-old story in which a selkie woman is trapped on land in human form. She unwittingly falls in love with a young fisherman, but her heart and soul still belong underwater.Michael Groom has worked in film since he left University in 2003. He moved to Caithness for 3 years to focus on his screenwriting career, and very quickly knew he wanted to make a short film inspired by the place. THE SELKIE’S LOVER is the result.

Crofting, fishing and knitting are all part of their lives’ rich tapestry. The film presents and represents the enormous contributions of women to the work, heritage, culture and spirit of the islands. Come along and see how many folk you recognise! The film will be introduced by Shetland Museum Archivist Brian Smith.

Documentary about two Scottish rappers who re-invent themselves as L.A. Homeboys in order to get signed by Sony. Californian hip-hop duo Silibil n’ Brains were going to be massive. No one knew the pair were really Scottish, with fake American accents and made up identities. When their promising Scottish rap act was branded “the rapping Proclaimers” by scornful publicists, friends Billy and Gavin reinvented themselves as LA homeboys. The lie was their golden ticket to a dream life. A film about truth, lies and the legacy of faking everything in the desperate pursuit of fame.

Miners’ unions are leading the country against savage austerity cuts handed to the nation by a Liberal Conservative government. Inspired by true stories from local families, the film follows the journey of one mining community as it is pushed inevitably towards a labour conflict with the Kingdom Coal Company in a seven month lock-out. In Indonesia, a country where killers are celebrated as heroes, the filmmakers challenge unrepentant death squad leaders to dramatize their role in genocide. The hallucinatory result is an unsettling journey into the imaginations of mass-murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Executive producer Werner Herzog said of THE ACT OF KILLING, “I have not seen a film as powerful, surreal, and frightening in at least a decade... it is unprecedented in the history of cinema.” The film has been garnering awards in festivals across the world, including the Human Rights Film Festival and Sheffield Documentary Festival.

His many, fragmented social encounters reveal a man who is paranoid, obsessed, anxious and generally unable to connect with the world around him. It’s only after overcoming a serious illness that Bill comes to see the beauty that life can offer when you’re looking. *NB Although there is no nudity, violence or bad language, these animations deal with adult themes and are not intended for children.
